Damn good 512gb and higher endurence than the m2

    • Also USB-C-only and touchbar, if someone loves it and loathes HDMI, SD, Magsafe.

So what's that "higher endurence than the m2" you're saying?

      • +6

Probably refer to the newer models where ssds were nerfed

    • +1

The new MacBook Pro M2 models (base config) have 1 NAND chip instead of 2 which reduces read/write speeds.

But does this also reduce endurance?
Also, the TBW figures of Apple SSDs are unknown AFAIK.

    • Apparently the m1’s have better battery life too.

  • +14

avoid the 8gb ram only models only get the 16gb ram models they will last longer over time.

    • Link for 16gb please. Thanks

      • I got the 16gb and sometimes my 14inch macbook slows down quite a bit when I got lots of tabs :(

        • How many tabs?

          • @[Deactivated]: Generally the ram fills up to 85% after even 3 tabs with youtube, spotify and one more app.

But most of the time I have like about 15-20 tabs open across two windows?

Don't get me wrong. I absolutely love my MBP14, its the best laptop I ever owned. (I'm usually a windows guy)

            • @postform: Something wrong. I opened 15 youtube tabs and compiled code simultaniously on a 8GB 13" m1 MBP and they swap was 4GB. It was an office laptop i had borrowed to experiment. But 85% of a 16GB for few tabs and an app is weird.

              • @[Deactivated]: Agreed. It would do it with ease. Hmmm you might have a dud 16gb system. Seems sus.

      • +1

M1 Pro here with 32gb memory. Would not go any lower.

    • -8

8gb is fine for macos, especially on apple silicon. If it was a windows machine then 100% agree 16gb should be minimum.

      • +9

That's a fundamental misunderstanding of RAM.

        • Just ignore them. Some people think computers only exist for youtube and maybe some Excel if they're feeling spicy

        • +3

I am doubling down merely because I have a base model MBA and have never exceeded my ram capacity. I regularly have 20+ tabs open and an instance of adobe premier and have never had an issue. There are plenty of use cases where 8gb of ram isn't enough, but the context of the comment was "8gb will not last" when it will if you know your use case. Ill post back in 5 years time when I am still using this 8GB model MBA perfectly fine lol.

          • +2

@doobey1231: Yeah, I have a few machines including a MBA(8gb ram). The MBA is absolutely fine for what I use it for.

Certain tasks or combination of tasks will be much better off on a 16gb machine.

People need to stop talking about Apple machines as if they somehow require less ram. There certainly may be cases where programs are optimised and the requirements differ between platforms but overall, users still need to make an assessment based on what they will be doing.

The whole Chrome tabs thing is stupid. Hell, I've had 20 tabs open on machines with 4gb ram and barely noticed.

            • +1

@ihfree: Well yeah that's what I am getting at, I am not saying its going to be fine for everyone, I'm only saying that telling people 16gb should be the minimum(especially when thats a $400 upgrade) is plain wrong, most of the people buying these m1 macbooks with only two thunderbolt ports are using them to browse the internet and do some light editing at best. 8gb will last for the next 10 years and macos is extremely efficient at using the 8gb it gets.

        • +2

Mac OS manages ram far better than windows though. Even before it memory swaps to SSD. The target market of the air is ok with 8gb ram.

I have a 8gb air and I haven’t had any issues. I have multiple browsers open, editing videos, played games and it all runs great.

I once had a message come up saying my ram is full but that was a memory leak from the mail app that was using more than like 6gb ram for some reason.

      • +3

You are very wrong… I listened to this advice and got an 8GB SO MUCH REGRET!! Constantly maxing out especially if I have finder open browsing stuff over my network through my NAS and have a bunch of tabs open

        • This. 8GB is not enough on macOS if you do anything more than have a couple of browser tabs open. 8GB RAM's limitations may not be immediately noticeable because macOS swaps to the SSD instead — and on the M1 series the SSDs tend to be pretty speedy, even on the base models — but you will hit the wall sooner or later, hard.

          • +1

@deadpoet: I bought the 8gb base model MBA on release, still going strong 20+ tabs get left open all the time and I almost always have an instance of adobe premier running too. Every use case is going to be different but saying 16gb should be the minimum is just not a true statement. I am going off my own personal experience with it and I am sticking to that.

It honestly seems like you miscalculated your use case, I am not saying that 8gb is fine for everyone, but telling everyone they need 16gb minimum - a $400 upgrade - is just plain wrong.

        • Yeah for some reason a myth started that because the SSDs are so fast in m1 machines you don't need as much ram. So far from true. I temporarily had an M1 MBA with 8GB and absolutely crushed it with my work. It's great for my wife who is just a light/casual user though. I find myself sometimes maxing out the 32GB on my M1 Max 16". Because Apple silicon is so fast you really notice when it starts swapping. My advice to anyone buying an Apple silicon mac is buy as much RAM as you can afford (especially if you are a heavy user). If I could go back in time I would've probably got 64GB (but I am a very heavy user).

      • +1

Try running chrome with some tabs. There goes your 8GB.

        • +1

I do, and no it doesn't lol, It was bad at the beginning when chrome had to run with Rosetta but now that it runs native on apple silicon its perfectly fine, and I am one of those people that has like 20+ tabs on at a time.

      • +1

I actually concur with doobey here :)
From personal observation too. I don’t do fcp or Lightroom etc on this 8gb ram mba of mine but then again, I don’t like doing those things on laptop. Having 20-25 tabs open seems to be fine and doesn’t slow down.

    • that's what she said

  • +11

My MacBook Pro budget is actually only $4400 so I'll pass

  • +2

Not hating on OP, but the free AirPods deal via Education store makes this older generation M1 less attractive, since you can get the M2 for a similiar price (assuming you use gift cards, apply 5% CR and sell the AirPods). Of course, if you can't be bothered with all that, this is pretty decent!

  • +4

    4.4k for a laptop… damn!

    • +1

Previous gen laptop, but still a decent one.

  • -3

$4500 for a 16 inch laptop lol as bad as nvidia

    • -1

Why tf did you get neg'd. It's the most ozb comment ever. Bloody brand name simps. I got you Johny

    • +9

Post a link to an equivalent windows laptop with similar build quality and specs. You'd be surprised.

      • -5

You mean those that throttle and run like shit on battery? There are plenty.

      • The same argument did not work for nvidia deals.

    • If you’re balking at the price you are literally not in the target market for this laptop.

There are few people who need a laptop of this spec…if you need one you’ll know it, and the price is irrelevant because it is just a tool to make you income.

      • You are really not helping the cause of not making Apple people sound like pretentious dicks.

        • The same logic could be applied to Windows laptops because they also exist at similar price points targeting the same users.

The main users complaining about these systems are tech illiterate.

          • @ihfree: What is the use case for a Windows or OSX laptop of this cost? There's only one scenario I can think of that isn't is better served by a workstation, and it's so niche that it's hardly worth acknowledging

            • @fleetfeather: Work from <not the office>, freelancers, other creatives, companies that hot desk, etc.

              • @ihfree: If you're WFH, you'd get a workstation. The workflow limitations you'd experience trying to work off a 16" screen on the road as a full-time gig would be brutal. I can't think of any hot desk roles that would require this level of compute

                • @fleetfeather: Yeah, but many companies are in a stage where work is split between home and the office.

  • m1 mbp with 16gb has been running for 2 years now - no issues still pretty fast.

  • I really wanna get one, convince me

    • +1

      Buy now and think later

  • No reason to get the M1 max when M2 Pro with 32 gb ram is cheaper, better battery life and similar performance.

    • +1

Depends on your use case, we export ProRes444XQ all day and the Max is much faster than the Pro for that kind of work.

If you are not doing a lot of video work with ProRes then yeah, get the M2 Pro.

    • Depends on which M2 pro you’re referring to.
Base 10C model is hardly any faster, the 12C M2 model is about 20% faster in CPU performance overall.

The 16C M2 GPU is about 30-40% slower than the 32C M1 GPU and the 19C GPU is about 25%-30% slower. So the M1 Max is definitely a worthwhile contender.
In terms of price the 16 inch M1 Max 32GB RAM 1TB SSD is still slightly cheaper than the 16 inch M2 Pro 32GB 1TB SSD and 32GB 512GB SSD variant.

Furthermore as a PC replacement, the M2 Pro models (2023) only support up to 2 external displays while the M1 Max (2021) supports up to 3 external displays for whomever interested.
Apple has really thought out pricing strategies when it comes to selling off their older models.

  • don’t get the m1 pro model with the touch bar, that has the old housing with a whopping 2 x usb c ports on the whole laptop, they released a new design not long after and brought all the old ports back

  • +3

Better off with the air rather than the 13 inch pro

  • -1

ik its a mac but 8g lol.

and 4.4k? still not come with 8T SSD storage?

are the SSD replaceable in those mac?

    • I think the 4.4K is paying for the m1 max chips & 32GB unified memory and lack of wattage.

    • Prove you're not tech illiterate by posting a comparable Windows system.

      • I'd say this question:

are the SSD replaceable in those mac?

        gives it all away ;]

  • +1

I would think the MBP 14” at $2400 is better value for people looking for a productivity machine? Apple Refurb Store

I know it’s heavier etc but I’m seeing 8GB add as a bit limiting these days even on Mac OS
