Recommend Me a Cheep Replacement Mobile for Parents Android Phone

Need to replace one of my parents Android phones. As there current phone whilst working need to be replaced as the battery is starting to swell up. Phone is sealed so battery isn't easily replaceable. So probably easier to just get a new one.

Doesn't need to be anything fancy. Just something cheep that isn't locked and can use there existing Aldi Mobile sim. After recommendations as not sure what to get them.

Telstra Network, so I'd probably avoid Xiaomi phones as they rarely have VoLTE functionality on Telstra (due to Telstra whitelisting) which will be required mid-2024 when Telstra are scheduled to shut down their 3G Network.
This applies even to Australian models, like my Mi 9T which used to have VoLTE on Telstra before a software update killed it.

Worth double checking for Telstra VoLTE compatibility (not just Xiaomi) for any handset before you buy.

It's possible Telstra will lift the whitelisting requirement before 3G shutdown to avoid massive customer uproar, but there's no guarantee, so best to plan ahead.

    • Do network resellers like Aldi have voLTE yet, they never did when I checked last year. Telstra, Optus and Vodafone kept that only for themselves directly.

      • Dunno, Boost does.and has done for more than 12 months.
Possibly they do now that 5G is turned on for Telstra MVNO's?

Assume the MVNO's will have to get it sometime in 2024 before the cutover and maybe at this point the whitelisting issue will also be resolved?

Note that Optus and Voda do not have the whitelisting restriction for VoLTE, so provided you're happy switching to their networks, you can continue to use a handset that might no longer work on Telstra after July 2024

        • Belong has volte and WiFi Calling now

      • Aldi does now. It came on a few weeks back after a software update on my phone. Not sure if it was there before, and the update allowed it, or if it was just a coincidence.

  • One with a good spell checker.

  • Personally for parents , buying an Android phones with no ADS is best option , look at MOTO G series phones or EDGE FUSION series phones , JB HIFI gives deals on half price . wait for them . any other brands like Xiaomi , VIVO , OPPO gives ads on phones , that could irritate them . Google Pixel , Samsung Galaxy is costly affair - Google basic phones & Samsung budget phones are not trust laggy & not trustworthy .

not necessarily , it 's not like the UI is filled with ads back to front . No ads in the settings , phone app , messages/SMS, etc . can easily be disabled if there are any in the system apps ( I had ads in the Security app which I really only accessed once or twice , disabled in the app settings easily though ) .

    Get a iPhone

    • Doesn't need to be anything fancy. Just something cheep

      • Now that's a cheap shot.

      • Just because it doesn't need them to be, doesn't mean they shouldn't treat their parents to something nice if they can comfortably afford it. It'll last longer too.

  • Known Budget + Cashies = replacement Phone.

    • Why would you pay inflated Cash Converters prices?

      • Quick and easy method option for OP who appears to not be able or willing to do the search themselves.
