Google Pixel 7 128GB $799, 256GB $929 Delivered (+ 10% Store Credit with 2TB Google One Plan) @ Google Store

670

So Google has discounted the Pixel 7 range to $799 for 128GB, and $929 for 256GB.

Yes, it's slightly more expensive than the Officeworks deal, but besides for the fact you can get Google to refund the difference through price matching - if you pay for 2TB per month with Google One, you'd get an additional 10% back as store credit!

Hope this helps someone! :D

  • Anyone know return policy for Google store?
    Is it 15 days?

I've heard that this is the first Pixel in a few generations where they've actually changed the camera sensor, which has come at the detriment of quality from a tried and proven version. Anyone have any views? I am really starting to need a new phone and really don't have my eyes on anything other than this.

    • +2

No it is better than previous sensors.

      • I guess what I was getting at is the quality of Pixel's photos comes from the software post-processing as much, if not more than the sensor. After truly getting the algorithm down pat for the old one they've now had to sort of start a step back with different hardware. Happy to be incorrect here.

Also don't see the value in the Pro?

        • +3

Base beats pro for value hands down

        • I have the 6 pro and have to agree. Pixel 2 and 3 had excellent photos every time. 6 Pro has focusing fringing issues at medium range and is more inconsistent.

Negged for simply asking questions… Nice.

I had a terrible experience with the 6a camera last week. Luckily I bought the phone at my local JB Hi-Fi and could immediately return it the next day for a full refund, as the staff were aware of the issue (which they said was very common in batches of the phone):

Any app that needed to use the camera would crash the phone, which would then restart itself. The Google camera, Google Lens, Google Translate, other camera apps, all crashed and restarted the phone. The camera is literally unusable in any form - Lens and Translate crash immediately as they launch with the camera turned on ready to go. The phone would also get very hot on the back near the camera bump.

I have tried to look for solutions but they are all stupid suggestions like restarting the phone, updating the app, clearing the cache, factory reset, etc. Yeah, you think I haven't tried those things already?

I have no idea why complaints are not more commonplace - nothing on OzBargain, in tech news, in the YouTube reviews, nothing… In fact, the MKBHD camera survey and those Google tv ads about the great camera convinced me to buy the 6a, only for it to be faulty.

I have also read about the 6 and 7 series Pixels having their camera glass randomly shatter. So with that context as well as my personal experience with the 6a, I will be avoiding all Google Pixel phones for the foreseeable future.

You can take my opinion with a grain of salt as I am just one person, but I just thought I'd put my negative experience out there as everything I've read so far has been ridiculously positive.

      • +4

It's almost as if such an issue is so rare, it might not have been even experienced and therefore reportable in the mass media

      • I got the Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 6a from the Optus deal. It's been almost a month, and I've not experienced any issues with the cameras (granted I don't take that many photos). Also, camera glass has not shattered yet.

The only issue I have with the Pixel is that I prefer the extra feature that comes with Samsung's OneUI, but that's personal preference, and I'm happy with my purchase.

      • -2

The pixels fanboys are rabid. Anything negative, gets a downvote and people saying that they don't have the issue. They did it a lot with the widespread modem problems and buggy software.

        • Would be nothing compared to apple and Samsung, these aren't even in the majority based on market share.

It's just that people are parroting these 'possilbe issues' like glass cracking, when it hasn't even happened to one person. Pretty usual though, one person has a bad experience vs 1000 other happy customers (which you don't usually hear about).

          • -2

@G-rig: Pixel fanboys have well and truly surpassed Apple fanboys. They're what apple fanboys used to be years ago. Samsung, doesn't even register.

There's been multiple reports for the glass issue. I don't understand the the 'not happening to one person comment'. You saying people you know in real life haven't experienced the issue?

            • +1

@Hahuh: Oh ok, good to know. Does it really matter lol.

I think people that buy a Samsung aren't at demanding on their phones and happy with them when spending more (expectations per dollar).

That issue sounds blown out of proportion and google haven't acknowledged it. It's like not buying a Jeep because they all blow up (not that I'd buy one anyway).

I think pixels are still a very solid option for around $700 and tick all the boxes for me. Don't need to get sucked into spending 2k on phones.

    • Huh - I never stated this as fact. I'm literally asking for peoples informed opinions on something I've heard from a respected tech youtuber for a possible future purchase. 5 negs really?

      • -1

You could have at list quoted your "source". Learn the lesson

    • I've used Pixel 1, 2, 4 and now 7 and this is the first time I wasn't wowed by the camera. It's not that it's worse (although anecdotally I've had more trouble getting accurate colours in, eg. sunset lighting than previously) but that the other phones on the market have caught up or surpassed it. I recently went on a trip with two friends and between us we had the latest Galaxy, latest iPhone and latest Pixel and my photos were consistently the least impressive. The high-contrast Pixel photo aesthetic just didn't look great in comparison with their slightly more accurate images. Each phone has strengths and weaknesses of course (the night sight time lapse on the Pixel is unreal) but if I were looking to purchase a new Android and I cared about cameras I would definitely be considering other options. There's also the issue with the lens cracking on this phone…

      • +1

        Oh has yours cracked already?

Camera is pretty good, better than the Pixel 5 (which was better than the 6), although some say the selfie cam is actually better on the 5 (but don't care about that). Probably better/worse in different areas.

Still a good solid phone and good experience, but go go for the top of the line iPhone and Samsung if you want the best (and want to spend over 2k on a phone). Could also get a proper camera if serious about photography.

No, the pixel 6 was the first big change in the camera sensor from the tried and true 12mp imx363 (used in all prior pixels) to a new 50mp unit. The pixel 7 use the same sensor as the 6.

The 6a uses the old 12mp unit.

I think I criticize the my pixel 6 for over sharpening , colours are ultra vivid and over use HDR. This is great for insta, but can be un- natural. The photos on my old pixel 4 were far more natural.

Mkbhd has a video on this (basically they still use same level of software mods, when the sensor and lens have since improved). I still think it's a great camera though.

You would be interested in a huge blind test competition with a huge number of votes for testing camera preference/quality. This year (2022) actually saw the Pixel 6a win the competition, with the trusty 12 mp sensor.

      https://youtu.be/LQdjmGimh04

The 7/7pro actually came second (same main sensor between the two). I believe for the 7 they might have toned down some of the software enhancements. Not sure how true that is given they probably should have done it for the 6 too, if it's just software.

Hope that helps, I would lean towards a 6a over a 7 just because of the price, if you just want a no frills phone that takes great photos.

Nice. Still waiting for the pro to drop sub $1000

    • Student beanscode 10% and 10% store credit gets you close.

      • I get my Mrs close most nights, but that doesn't count either

  • Be nice if it dropped below 699 within a year of release and then I can price protection claim it. Probably won't (besides got some money off for trade in as well but later got charged that as decides to sell old phone privately). Was still a ripper deal the JB one.

stay away from pixel phones. Mine blew up the first day. battery busted, returned for a full refund and luckily didn't lose anything important.

The pixel 6A is by far the most rip off phone in the history. $500 for a choppy 60hz display.

    • Lol
Sounds like a one in a million case

I think we’ve already got your point in the comments that you did on multiple posts

  • I wonder if this will provide a more stable Android Auto experience than Samsung. Been having heaps of issues.

No doubt this discount is because the Samsung S23 will be announced tomorrow and be available for pre-sale.

    • Yes, Samsung is most likely the issue.

So subscribe to the 2Tb plan (what's the cost?) first,
    THEN buy the pixel 7,
THEN get 10% off the pixel 7 as store credit?

    Additional questions:
    - does this work with a turkey plan? ($12 a month)
    - can you just buy 2Tb for a month , get the credit, cancel the plan?

  • Does anyone know if buying from Google store has an ABN on the invoice (for TRS purposes)?

    • +1

      Yes it does

      • Good to know - thanks!

  • If i pay for the whole device using existing Google store credit, will i still get 10% store credit cash back or not?

Coming from Pixel 5, I think Pixel 7 is the best value option at the moment in terms of features and price. I miss the fingerprint sensor on the back, as the Pixel 7 fingerprint sensor doesnt work that well at low lighting (I have a tempered glass screen protector). I still prefer the Pixel 5 size so hopefully future generations will bring this form factor back. Battery life is great on the Pixel 7.

    • Agreed mate, I also came from the Pixel 5. Was a great phone and I didn't feel the need to upgrade if it weren't for the JB hi-fi deal and extras to get a newer phone. The battery life is excellent on both. I also prefer a smaller form factor. Whilst the Pixel 5 felt a bit cheap it was a fair bit lighter and almost the same size screen (same quality). They have made the pixel 7 feel more premium but they are slippery suckers, once you got a case on it doesn't matter about the finish. Prefer longer battery and more pocketable option than carrying around a massive phone these days.

Yeah the hardware fingerprint scanner was a lot better, the front scanner is a pain in low light (with or without protector on)
Annoying when they have to copy apple for the sake of it but luckily the face unlock works well during the day and is pretty handy.

      • +1

I kept the Pixel 5 as a backup as it's too hard to part with it. Another reason to upgrade is the software updates will stop end 2023. The face unlock helps seal the deal for me.

        • +1

Yeah I should have kept it too, would just sit in the drawer but would be hard to beat it for $350 which is what i sold it for.
Perfect to take on a SE Asia holiday etc. Wasn't that light and day the upgrade.. some things i prefered on the pixel 5 (loudspeaker quality for music), however the earpiece vol seems to go louder, the dictation feature and software works a lot better

    • Just a thought, have you adjusted the setting for 'increase touch sensitivity?

This "improves touch when using screen protectors".

I only found the setting on my 6A yesterday, and it's made a moderate improvement.

      • I played with that setting but it's better with it off (too touchy otherwise with normal operation).

        Suggest the following:
        - setting two profiles for both thumbs, one of each in lower light
        - face unlock - skip lock screen (although I turned this back off or you lose your media controls on lock screen).
        - could try the approved screen protectors (but probably expensive and not much better).

  • could anyone please share a unidays code? thanks in advance
