  • Would DRAM be strongly advised for a laptop system drive?

    • It's not something that you want to cheap out on, that's for sure

      • What's a good single sided gen 3 drive with dram?

        • Samsung 970 Evo Plus or WD SN750. However, if single sided, then it is likely you are looking at the 1TB version of those.

        • Why single sided? Doesn't dual sided fit in the laptops?

      It is less of an issue, unless your laptop is more desktop replacement type. Situations where DRAM really matters are database servers or constant workload over a long period of time (i.e. servers). So, if your usage pattern is more server like, then you want DRAM with SSD. Otherwise, DRAMless with HMB is fine.

      SN570 2TB (current / newer batch) has a large dynamic SLC cache, it can write at 3000MB+/s for up to 45% of its storage when the drive is empty (i.e. up to 900GB) before dropping to its TLC speed. Problem is, that's also not something a normal laptop can benefit from (you need another SSD that your laptop can read at >3000MB/s in order to fill SN570 2TB at close to its max write speed for 900GB). So you need a laptop that has 2 SSDs or another possibility is if your laptop has Thunderbolt 3/4 or USB 4.

      If you want a middle performance drive for normal use at a good price, rather than say a high performance drive for a data server that can keep up that high performance for very large reads and writes, DRAM is the best thing to cheap out on. Because you won't even notice you haven't got lots of it.
