Calbee Melts Chip Varieties 170g $2 @ Woolworths

320

Ok - here's the 411 folks.

These chips are phenomenally good. Full of flavour, little bits of melted cheese on the chip itself is what makes it so amazing.

I've seen these on sale at NQR but for $2.50.

Meatlovers is my personal favourite.

  • Which variety do you recommend first-up?

    • +2

      Meatlovers - Hands Down

Bought one at half price to try some time ago, they are horrible. Won't buy again.

    • Which flavour?

      • +4

Original and burger. Like @GerrardLFC said, it's very oily. I like Calbee potato sticks when I tried in Japan, but all those Calbee products sold in Woolworths are terrible, including this : https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/81995/calb….

        These are nice
        https://japanesetaste.com/products/calbee-jagabee-potato-sti…

But appreciate for sharing as each individuals have different taste. Don't let this stop you from posting future deals.

        • I miss those potato sticks!! You can get a box of them from Costco occasionally.

      • +8

Also bought some of the cheeseburger flavour ones to try and wouldn’t buy them again.

The actual chips are nice but that sauce they use is gross… imagine wet cheesy butter on a chip.

It’s plain weird and doesn’t taste good at all.

    • +13

Yes i tried one it was so oily and felt sick after eating quarter of the packet

    • +9

Agree these are terrible, I hate wasting stuff but I had to chuck out the bag since no one else liked it…

    • +15

I had the cheese melts. Awful.. just awful. Felt nauseous.

    • +7

Also chiming in, ate 2 chips rest straight in the bin.
      Never again.

    • +6

I love potato chips in any flavour until I tried these. These are the worst tasting chips I have ever had and I have tried them all. The worst part is that there are bits on the chip that feel soggy as if someone has already had a go at it and put it back in the packet. Never again.

    • The worst chip I have ever had. It was in the bin after a few bites. So greasy, salty and shitty. Felt like I was gonna have a heart attack within 30 minutes if I kept eating them.

    • Yeah. If a dog poo married a puke, and they had a baby together, that's what these chips taste like.

  • +4

    Gross!

  • +9

a while ago, someone recommend those New Zealand brand chips from Reject Shop (https://www.rejectshop.com.au/p/bluebird-sour-cream-chive-ch…).. i HIGHLY recommend this brand - i've only had the Sour Cream, and they were damn good

    • +3

Also check out Bluebird salt & vinegar and also green onion (weird there is no green/spring onion flavoured chips in Aus). NZ chips in general seem to be crunchier than Aus chips especially the ripples cut.

    • Agree, grew up on these. Was so happy when I found they were sold a Reject Shop and at a good price also. I recommend the Salt n Vinegar :)

  • +3

Terrible weird tasting chips and have a odd mouth feel.

  • +1

It's an acquired taste for sure.

  • +3

Is 49% potato an insanely low amount of potato for chips?

    • +7

depends, it's pretty high for corn chips.

      • +2

Also quite high for wood chips.

  • +6

If you like the taste and feeling of a mouthful of cold oil, go for it. Couldn't even get through the bag, had to bin most of it.

Concept is good, execution was not.

  • +10

These are absolutely foul. Why would anyone want to eat chips covered in weird yellow jizzim?

    • +8

Agreed, who would pay full price for yellow coloured jism chips when you can toss up your own for free?

Thanks to your detailed description, you have put me off these chips for life!

      • +1

If that's how yours comes out you should probably seek medical advice. Similarly, if you actually like these yellow goo-covered chips, you should probably seek medical advice anyway. :)

I tried them ages ago, I'm in the 'threw them out after a few chips' camp - they had an unfortunate after effect on me too.

IMHO, there's a reason why they're constantly on special at Woolies…

  • +2

    utterly HORRIBLE these are.

  • +1

    Yeah not a fan

Do agree with 87percent tho Bluebird brand from Reject shop/ International section of Coles are nice

  • +3

Found these pretty distasteful… The cheese is hardened gunk and the flavour is kinda off.

Better to just DIY nachos or the chip equivalent

  • +2

I've tried this. wouldn't buy it again

  • +2

The last lot I got were soggy never again.

  • Someone in my area really loves these…the shelves were empty of all flavours when I went to Woolies on Saturday

  • I had a small bag of these that was given out for free at a beer festival and loved them. Must have been drunk because when I had them again I hated them.

  • I bought a few packs from Savemore. 2 weeks after, still have 3 packs left in the drawer. Really understand why it shows up in Savemore.

Imagine smushy cheese/cream mixture on soggy chips, all stone cold.

  • +5

They are like somwlebody coughed up a little bit of phlem onto each chip and charging a premium

  • +1

That fake cheese they use is pretty nasty. Tastes good for the first few chips then by half the bag you start to feel your arteries clogging up

  • +3

I ate one chip and threw the bag away. These are absolutely vile

  • I've had a lot of calbee chips, mostly purchased in Japan. It seems to be hit and miss. In my experience I liked more than 70% of the flavours and styles I've had I liked, but some of them do make you wonder how they passed the initial testing phase and actually became a product. Different markets I guess.
Haven't had this one. Based on comments will pass…

If you have the opportunity to, if you're ever in a place that has a fresh calbee chips shop, highly recommend. I went in Japan and the normal flavoured sticks are so damn good.

    • I've had Calbee chips before bought in Asian grocery stores but from memory they are made in China/HK/Taiwan. Whilst not fantastic they were OK which is why I decided to try when I first saw the range in Woolies. Agree with others- not a bad idea but absolutely terrible execution!

      • I think it depends heavily where you buy them. Most you buy in Japan are either made in Japan or South Korea, but it varies heavily depending on the retailing country as far as I can tell.

        https://www.calbee.co.jp/en/corporate/overview/

I'm surprised there are many manufacturers internationally and particularly in the USA- and only 1 in mainland China and 1 in HK

  • +1

I got the burger ones I while back, one word: horrible, good if you want to lose some weight tho, will induce vomiting.

  • +1

I like these chips, but can see why people hate them.

The Calbee pizza chips are much nicer. Wish they sold those instead.

  • I had the meat lovers flavour and liked it. I understand why some people don’t but definitely worth trying.

  • +1

    Disgusting

  • +1

    Agreed horrendous!

  • These things are creepy AF.

  • These ones don't come up often, but they are the BEST. If you ever seen them, buy them quick, cos I will clear their shelves whenever I spot these! https://calbee.com.au/product/bbq-flavour/

  • +1

Haha I'll chime in as well, got the cheese flavour, shared a bag with my brother and after 3 chips we threw the rest in the bin.

It's like a foul-tasting frosting that has a terrible mouth feel. Good idea, bad execution IMO.

  • +1

    They taste soggy

  • Cheap as chips.

  • I come to conclude all comments made so far : "buy at your own risk, you've been warned !"

  • +1

Add me to the no bueno list. Wet, weird texture. Do not buy.

  • +1

they are disgusting….why are they even still selling them?

last time i checked, they were made in Indonesia

  • +2

It's definitely not cheese that is melted on the chip. Some weird oily substance flavoured to be cheese (can't even taste the cheese as all you taste is this artificial "melted" looking crap). You feel absolutely sick after eating these.

  • +1

I thought they tasted like cheap ass American fake cheese crap.

They lasted about 3 months at home when normally chips would last 1 day.

  • -1

Tried the original and wasn’t the best. Chips were too moist and the cheese melt drip too sweet.

Can definitely tell this would suit more to an Asian palette but not sure for those who loves their “real” cheese.

  • Not good.

  • lol was keen to try when reading OP's description, but guess ill pass after the comments

  • I also thought these were horrible!

  • +1

I didn't like them, but then I kept eating them so I dunno I guess they grew on me a bit. I got through the packet but I can't see myself buying them again.

  • These seriously are absolutely Awful. They tasted like you had just vomited. The idea has potential, but I can't believe the taste testers at this company thought they were ok. All unopened packets went straight in the bin.

  • The way comments are describing these sounds straight up awful lol.

Do they coat them in greasy sauce at the factory?? Sounds like just soggy greasy chips out of the bag.

Edit Ok so sounds like the sauce is in a packet.

    • Nope you were right the first time. The chips are precoated in the factory. The sauce isn't in a packet.

      • "The chips are precoated in the factory. The sauce isn't in a packet."

        What! Sounds terrible lol.

Not sure if they were these exact ones, but I saw a whole shelf of Calbee's on clearance at my local coles. But since it was nothing like what I seen before (I've seen and had normal Calbee pack chips before) I decided it wasn't a good idea and didn't buy one.

        • Calbee chips are usually good! But not these melted cheese things :(

  • +1

    What’s a 411¿

    • In the US its the number for "information" ie directory assist.

      • Huh. So why use it here in australia ¿

  • Jesus those ingredients 🤯

    • +1

With ~35% fat (~20% saturated) these might be the leaders among unhealthy snacks.

  • Dw op, maybe not for everyone but these chips are pretty good to me too, really shouldn't have it often though!
Reminds me of the indomie chitato chips
