Yet Another Maths Problem

Looking to get some help from the math gurus on here. Can’t believe I cannot do year 5 math.

Question:

There are 480 pupils in a swimming club. 1/2 of the boys is equal to 3/4 of the girls. How many more boys than girls are there in the swimming club?

There is a hint about making the units equivalent ie changing 1/2 to 3/6, I get that but how do I do about converting the 3/4 of the girls to 1 full unit?

    ChatGPT is definitely going to make explaining year 5 maths questions for parents easier

    "There are 480 pupils in a swimming club. 1/2 of the boys is equal to 3/4 of the girls. How many more boys than girls are there in the swimming club?"

    Let x be the number of girls in the club.
    Then, 1/2 * (480 - x) = 3/4 * x
    Solving for x, we get:
    x = 192
    So there are 480 - 192 = 288 more boys than girls in the club.

    "Can you explain the steps for solving x further"

    Sure, here's a step-by-step explanation:
    Define the variable: Let x be the number of girls in the club.
    Write the equation: We know that 1/2 of the boys is equal to 3/4 of the girls, so we can write the equation as:
    1/2 * (480 - x) = 3/4 * x
    Solve for x: To solve for x, we need to isolate x on one side of the equation. We can start by multiplying both sides of the equation by 4/3 to cancel out the fraction on the right side:
    4/3 * 1/2 * (480 - x) = 4/3 * 3/4 * x
    Next, we simplify the left side of the equation:
    (480 - x) / 3 = x
    Finally, we can subtract x from both sides to isolate x on one side:
    480 - 2x = 3x
    Solve for x: We can now solve for x by adding 2x to both sides:
    480 = 5x
    And dividing both sides by 5:
    x = 96
    Answer: So, there are 96 girls in the club and 480 - 96 = 384 boys in the club. And 384 - 96 = 288 more boys than girls.

    (though the answer is slightly incorrect :) )

    • I really need to give this a try!!! Ty

        yeah its not perfect, but for a lot of things, its a hell of a head start for some explanations to give a better starting point than google :)

          yeah its not perfect

          Its simply wrong.

          If that's the best ChatGPT can do, get the completely wrong answer to a simple math problem, cheating by using it will be self-punishing.

          • @GordonD: It gets a lot of maths/logic problems wrong, but sounds so confident, you think you must have made an error :-)

    There is a hint about making the units equivalent ie changing 1/2 to 3/6

    Using the hint provided:

    B : G
    1/2 : 3/4
    3/6 : 3/4
    6 : 4

    Total = 10 Ratio = 480
    1 Ratio = 48
    B = 6 x 48 = 288
    G = 4 x 48 = 192

    B - G = 288 - 192 = 96

    • I think this is the best way to explain it, Ty

      Hey @RichardL another curly one.

      The number of girls is 4/7 of the number of boys in school. 3/7 of the boys and 3/8 of the girls obtained the gold award in a fitness test. 819 pupils did not obtain the gold award.

      Q1. How many pupils took part in the fitness test?
      Q2. How many pupils obtained the gold award?

      Tip. Use a comparison model to show 7 units of boys and 4 units of girls.

      • +3

        G = 4/7 x B
        Gold = 3/7 x B + 3/8 x G
        No Gold = 4/7 x B + 5/8 x G = 819

        Sub first in third G + 5/8 x G = 819
        So G = 504, B = 7/4 x G = 882

        1. B + G = 1386
        2. Gold = 1386 - 819 = 567

        I have no idea how to use the comparison table

        G : B
        4 : 7
        3/8 : 3/7 (Awarded)
        5/8 : 4/7 (Not Awarded)

        2.5/4 : 4/7 - (Not awarded - split the fraction so the denominator matches the 4 ratio for girl from line 2)
        2.5 : 4

        Total = 6.5 Ratio = 819
        1 Ratio = 126
        11 Ratio = 1386

        A1. Total Pupil = 1386
        A2. Total Gold Award = 1386 - 819 = 567

        Alternately

        B : G
        ☐☐☐☐☐☐☐ : ☐☐☐☐ (7:4)

        Since Girl is 3/8, multiply the overall ratio above by 2, to make it easier to calculate

        ☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐ : ☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐ (14:8)

        Using '3/7 of the boys and 3/8 of the girls obtained the gold award in a fitness test'

        B : G
        3/7 x 14 : 3/8 x 8
        6 : 3

        ☒☒☒☒☒☒☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐ : ☒☒☒☐☐☐☐☐ (☒ = Awarded)

        Not Awarded = 13☐ = 819
        1☐ = 63

        A1. Total = 22☐ = 22 x 63 = 1386
        A2. Awarded = 9☒ = 9 x 63 = 567

    not sure if this is the simplest way to do it. been a llllllooooong time since I've done algebra

    1/2x = 3/4y

    times by 4 to remove the fraction (or simply x 2 to get a whole X)

    2 x = 3 y

    x = 1.5y

    x + y = 480

    1.5y + y =480

    2.5y = 480

    y = 192

    x = 288

    x - y = more boys

    Dont worry I also only remember basic uni level and year 12 level specs maths LoL if any if I remember anything after totally changing my field from high school to uni. I dont remember anything before year 10 dude. Like they said first world problems.

    Anyway you can use desmos graphic calculator, and the wolfram alpha website too (very hand in maths as far as I remember, especially for those quick cubic or higher root answers) rather than factorising $h!t (which was honestly ridiculous in my opinion guessing two (may be three at times) numbers)

    There are 480 pupils in a swimming club. 1/2 of the boys is equal to 3/4 of the girls. How many more boys than girls are there in the swimming club?

    You just need to be clear and use first principles, translating each sentence to equations:

    1) There are 480 pupils in a swimming club:

    B + G = 480

    2) 1/2 of the boys is equal to 3/4 of the girls

    B / 2 = 3G / 4

    Therefore, B = 3G/2

    Substituting into (1) gives you 3G/2 + G = 5G/2 = 480

    Therefore, G = 480 * 2 / 5 = 192

    Therefore, B = 3G/2 = 3 * 192 / 2 = 288

    3) How many more boys than girls are there in the swimming club?

    B - G = 288 - 192 = 96

    If you practice these a lot, you can start having decent pattern recognition. For example, when I read the question, I noticed within seconds that the answer is 96.

    Since 1/2 the boys is equal to 3/4 of the girls, it must be the case that G = 2/3B - visualise cutting up a pie, how do you divide it such that one side is 2/3 * the other side - that's right, you divide it into 5 segments and split it 3/5 and 2/5. Therefore, the difference must be 1/5, and 1/5 of 480 is…96.
