Funny how M.2 deals pop up the same day I browse around and purchase two.
    Such a shame.

  • +4

this seems like a ripper deal. i dont need it, but i just feel.. like.. i need it?

    • +1

Really want one to put in my E14 ThinkPad. But, I really don't need it. But, I want it…

You can add a free PS5-compat heatsink for that one, so advantageous if you can get into a centrecom to pickup.

      • How

        • +1

Just add the SSD into cart and the heatsink will be added in automatically.

    • Thanks been looking for PS5 solution for a while. No more local stocks hence had to do delivery for $5

  • will this work in the dell 7060 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/751847
does that support PCIe 4.0 ?

    • +1

EDIT: Sorry I was wrong, it does have an M.2 PCIe SSD slot.

    • +4

Yeap has an PCIe gen3x4, so it'll work just not at full speed.

I just got one for the same mini PC :D

      • +1

it'll work just not at full speed

If it was a fast gen 4 drive it wouldn't work at full speed in a gen 3 socket. But its a gen 4 drive that only works at gen 3 speeds, so there's no reason it won't work at its full speed in a PC with a gen 3 socket.

  • this works on ps5 strangely enough

    • How?

      • +1

I have this exact ssd on my ps5

      • +4

Because it's gen 4, that's the only compulsory thing for it to run on PS5.

        • The original spec demanded 7000mb second or some crazy figure?

          • @hamwhisperer: 5500mb/s read is the recommended speed but no game at this stage is optimised to use the full speed. It has been tested by youtubers any Gen 4 SSD works. It should be good for now.

    • -7

PS5 needs 5500mbps read speed for optimal game loading. The one posted might "work" but its like putting e10 in a ferrari haha.

Though if you cant afford proper ps5 internal storage and dont want external ssd options then this is fine for ps4 game library.

Save up for one with at least 5500mbps read speed

      • -1

I don't get why gaymers like using ferrari's as examples. The nominal value of a ferrari compared to a pc part is tremendously different. One week of wages vs one year of your life is totally different.

        • +10

          "Gaymers"? Really?

      • +13

Wrong, digital foundry did a test using the slowest pcie4 drive wd 750se 3200-3500mbs vs the fastest drives and there was literally 0 difference in terms of loading and playing ps5 titles

The only difference is slower copying/write data from internal ssd to nvme

Search the video on youtube yourself

        • Thanks for the info, I was curious about this.

        • +2
        • +2

That doesn't change the desired specs which Sony listed.

New games may demand that speed, otherwise hitching.

        • -3

Why all the negs, literally 5500 is the Playstation recommendation. Games will get more intensive with their file sizes throughout this generation so if 550 isn't required right now it will be soon. You might get away with a lesser speed card for basic games but seems like a waste of money long term to cheap out in the short term

      • -3

Not sure why down vote, some of us actually read the articles when they added the feature.

Even the fastest gen 4 is slower than the storage built in and they need the external to match it as close as possible

      • You don’t understand the practice, only the marketing.
I have the firecuda 530, but I even know there was no reason for buying it.
Most games don’t even command anywhere near that speed. Be aware I’ve been playing the games I play on PS3 PS4 and now PS5 all with their incremental graphical improvements. I don’t need ten times the memory speed other than for loading. The pop in and environmental load is dealt with, with much less power.

  • Wow, didn’t intend to get an ssd today, but here we are with an order placed lol.

    Thanks anyway.

Also are these well above SATA speeds or barely beating data drives?

    • +1

SATA caps out at around 600MB/s iirc so it's 3x performance which helps throughout. Less of an issue for gaming and day to day tasks, but for lots of data transfer throughput they certainly come in handy

      • +1

Yeah I get these generally to store large files like media which generally is a sequential read/write task I think?

Main reason speed matters for me is though for photo archive back up. I think it’s more random read/write speed and absolutely buggers all drives. Completely saturates even TB3 interfaces…

  • Is the P3 ($94.9) a better deal for PS5? Seems the write speed is 30% faster.
    https://amzn.asia/d/4HbVX9t

    • +4

Crucial P3 isn't PCIE 4.0 though so it won't work with the PS5.

  • +1

2TB one still in stock, and is for slighty more than double the price of the 1TB!

    • +1

It was $170 when I put it on my watchlist last weekend.

  • Thanks OP. Managed to get one for $70 after applying a $15 promotion coupon, that showed up on that page :)

    • care to share what the $15 promo details where?

      • It was the PRIME15 coupon code against my account.

    Aren't these junk?

"Kingston NV2 SSD Review: Cheap But Risky
A generic budget SSD with irregular hardware"

    https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/kingston-nv2-ssd

    • +3

This comment really saved my bacon. Should be up the top.

    • +3

It is a bit tricky. Tom's hardware did receive a TLC version of 1TB NV2, but elected to review the 2TB QLC version (which is good).

QLC versions of NV2 1TB do exist. Then, there is controller lottery. I have both 1TB Phison E21 TLC version and 1TB SMI SM2267XT TLC version. The one I received from Amazon US was SMI SM2267XT version. While overall, E21 version is probably better, I did find my E21 version (obtained from a local retailer) isn't as good as the one reviewed by TechPowerUp.

Tom's Hardware is a bit harsh on NV2 QLC version though. It is understandable because early versions being reviewed are TLC so this swap is really dodgy. However, at this price, it is still the cheapest PCIe gen 4 x4 SSD (even though it performs like PCIe gen 3). Its QLC NAND speed is better than Crucial (for the moment, it uses Intel newer gen QLC NAND, and Intel has sold its SSD division to Hynix). 3 years warranty is also subpar.

There is a gamble and the later to get NV2, the higher chance you get QLC.

    • -2

Because it is new not many reviews are found

  • Thanks OP, think I got the last one

  • I wanted to grab 2 but its a 1 - 4 weeks wait..

  • +2

if someone gets it please post if QLC or TLC thanks

    • I ordered one. How do I know?

    • it’s my question also ….lots of talk of speed not much about durability tlc vs qlc …slow speed already seems to hint at qlc …..

    • the german review in amazon says was qlc when it arrived ….any links to kingstown spec that tells chip type ?

    • Qlc with pslc cache

  • +1

    I'm waiting for a 2TB M2 SSD to drop to $200.

    • The 2tb version is $182 ! Bargain imo

  • 3,500MB/s read, 2,100MB

Suprised it works in the ps5tbh

Didn't it need pretty high rates?

    • ps5 specs say it needs it, reality is it doesn't and you won't notice the difference.

      • -2

With some things for now. Just wait for a sale for a drive around the 5500mbps mark so you dont look like a chump

        • why would you look like a chump? No game comes close to using the speed yet and it is unlikely you will see any that will with the desire to make games cross platform. If you do find that unicorn game that requires it then you can consider an upgrade later. This falls squarely into the future proofing myth where you are paying a premium just in case something one day before your device is obsolete needs it.

  • Will it work in lenovo s540 13 inch?

  • Anyone recommend a heat sink that will work on the ps5 or is the consensus to go bare back with this card ?

  • +7

    $105 - Crucial P3 Plus 3D NAND NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD Drive, 1000 GB
Delivering impressive speed with sequential reads/writes up to 5000/4200MB/s1

It's also on the Top5 at Tom's Hardware (for this month) - https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-ssds,3891.html

    • Thanks man, I'll get one of these

      • No dram. Should I be worried for a boot drive?

        • boot time all about reads and dram is empty at boot ……also look at how does win10 OS operate ….uses some of the motherboard ram as cache and it’s why some manufacturers are dramless, saves. money and in some real life scenarios vs benchmarks no perceived difference ….

. i didn’t perceive bettter boot time when i went from samsung 950 nvme to 990 , yes MB has nvme 4 support , gets to a point where other things on the MB and OS become bottle necks ….

          • @garage sale: I'm not worried Bout boot times. I just had a 1tb silicon power ssd fail on me. It did not have a dram. I just browse web and pl after two years ay games from tiem to time. I wonder if a dram would ha e prolonged the life or if it was just bad silicon.

            • @leftspeaker2000: would have been bad silicon …cells don’t wear from reads ….cells wear from writes …and you can usually check using manufacture utilities i’d creels are worm out …..they quote how many TB can be driven to a drive ….think my 1tb sammy is 300TB of writes …

    • +1

You need to read Tom's Hardware's description carefully. P3 Plus is QLC. Also, if you don't have PCIe gen 4, you won't be able to take advantage of Phison E21. P3's QLC performance is quite ordinary.

      P3 Plus Sustained Write

Note: This is the 2TB version, so for 1TB version, you need to cut the SLC cache is half. Also, x axis is time. So, you need to realise:

      • 1TB's SLC cache is about 275GB, once that's depleted, the write speed is 100MB/s.
      • 1TB version is unable to reach 4,200 MBps even with PCIe gen 4. 3,600 MBps write is SLC's max (it's just the way QLC works, especially with 4 channels setup (instead of 8)).
    • The P5 Plus is currently at $133 (buy 2 save %5) which is a good deal. I bought mine for $144 ($136 with gift card) 2 weeks ago and just arrived today.

  • Do these fit in laptops?

    • -2

Most likely not, the NVMe drives in laptops are usually in the M.2 2230 (30mm lenght) or M.2 2242 (42mm length)
Best to check the specs for your laptop and see what size NVMe drives are used

      • Thanks for your help

        • +6

It's not helpful. A vast majority of the newer laptops are 2280

          "M.2 2280 form factor
Perfect for thin laptops and small-form-factor PCs"

    • I believe this ssd 2280 factor will fit into laptop such as Acer Nitro AN515

      • My HP Victus 16 has a 2280

  • Any good recommended external caddies?

  • +1

    Thanks OP.

Case, PSU, Cooling, RAM, Motherboard, Storage - Done.

    CPU, GPU to go.

  • I see can work on PS5
Does it also work on Xbox X.
Is there any difference in the compatiblity

    • If you find an adapter to the xbox

  • Sounds like this will do great as my secondary nvme for my Steam library and whatnot. No rush either. Thanks OP.

  • -1

Been waiting for this to go under $90 for weeks then bought the P5 Plus 2 weeks ago sigh.

Note that it is $5.99 delivery without Prime (guess everyone now has Prime)

  • Would this fit in the new Mac Mini M2 to upgrade from the 256gb SSD that comes from factory? Apple are charging an extra $546.70 to upgrade from 256gb to 1TB.

    • From a cursory glance online, it looks like the SSD on the Mac Mini M2 is soldered to the board, like the M1 (classic Apple)

      • i thought the RAM was but not the SSD?

        • nope SSD is soldered as well

    • You cannot upgrade anything on new macs

  • What is a suitable thunderbolt 4 or usb 4 enclosure? It would make a very fast external drive suitable for the mac mini or MacBook pro

  • If anyone has received and opened theirs, can they confirm if it is TLC or QLC?

  • Self test: Random 4K read/write at 30MB/s

    That’s awful for a PCIe Gen 4
