Wusthof Classic Chef’s Knife 20cm $119 (RRP $349) @ David Jones

380

Have been shopping around for a solid work horse knife and noticed the 20cm Chef’s knife had been priced cheaper than the advertised 40% off Wusthof products at David Jones.

Sticker in store was $209.40 (40% off $349) however online price was $119 and when scanned also comes up as $119 in-store.

Inflated DJ’s retail price aside great deal for a very reliable knife as these normally float around the $200 mark elsewhere.

Plenty of stock available in-store for click and collect it seems depending on location.

Also don’t forget your Cashrewards for an extra 2% off if buying online.

Something to think about but I've heard the finger guard on the heel makes it hard to sharpen this knife

Yeah, what's up with that? I've never seen that before.

Complimentary service but you have to pay shipping both ways, not bad to be honest.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR KNIFE SHARPENING SERVICE:
Postage fees to and from Fackelmann Housewares will be at your expense for all options.
Please note the amount that will be charged to your card [for return shipping] will be $13.50 inclusive of packaging, postage and tracking.

Lmao I'm not filling in a a form and sending in the knives whenever I need my knife sharpened. I can do it myself.

The weird "finger guard" on the heel makes using honing steels and whetstones a lot more annoying. I would not buy this knife just because of that.

          • @rosebank: Its a nice addition they provide the service though. My Avanti set has the same sort of style and I cant say I have ever had an issue sharpening them.

            • -1

@doobey1231: That requires you to pack and send to them at your own cost, and pay for return shipping. And turnaround time if not in Sydney is 2 weeks.

I don't hate Wusthof or anything, I exclusively buy their steels, but the sharpening service is bs, and that finger guard thing is the dumbest shit ever

              • +1

@rosebank: Yes I understand the requirements in order to use the service, that doesn’t take away that it’s a nice addition to buying that brand. And like I said the finger guard on my avantis have never been an issue, can’t see it being one here either personally. But everyone’s different!

                • @doobey1231: Sure, I guess $20-30 isn't bad for a knife to be professionally sharpened, but I also don't know how much a local knife sharpener would cost because I've never used one.

The finger guard on the bolster is something I've truly never seen, and I own 30+ knives; German, Japanese, Swiss, Chinese, in all different shapes and sizes, and that would be a huge annoyance to me. But if you're are happy with it, then I'm happy that you're happy.

    • Nothing an angle grinder can't take care of when you're sharpening it anyway.

    • Not if you know what you're doing. Had these knives for 12~ years and got them sharpened a few days ago. As good as new.

If you want a 20cm workhorse knife, get this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/153001795044

I would also recommend a Victorinox Santoku, but they only go up to 17cm

    • +3

I've got the linked Victorinox. It's just so good that, as much as I want something fancier, I just don't see the need. 7 or 8 years and going strong

      • +2

Victorinox are kinda underrated among home cooks who like fancy German and Japanese knives. But if you've worked in a commercial kitchen, many cooks use Victorinox. I don't even know what type of steel it is, if I can sharpen it and hone it to keep it sharp fairly easily, I don't really care.

Best knife at this price point for sure.

Hey @Aureus wouldn't this be better value same knife(?) with block & free delivery

        • I prefer the Victorinox, but I am no expert and knife preference is subjective.

      • I think a Chinese cleaver is the best all-rounder knife there is. But there's a bit of a learning curve but once you get the hang of it, it can be incredibly rewarding.

    • What are the fibrox handles like to use? I would almost be tempted to go straight for the rosewood handle just because of how ugly it looks, and how comparitively nice the rosewood looks. I'm a superficial knife man apparently.

      • +2

Fibrox is great; ergonomic, good grip, can just chuck it in the dishwasher. But go rosewood if you want, it does look nice but the blade is the same.

    • Definitely agree Victorinox can’t be beaten at this price point in terms of reliability! The push over the edge (pun intended) for me was the nice heft and weight of the Wusthof handle vs Fibrox but as someone’s mentioned the Victorinox Rosewood are also a great range for a fancier more solid feel.

      • I have a 23cm Wusthof Classic chef's knife that I never use, and even though I recommended it, a 20cm Victorinox cook's knife is something I don't use often. My go-tos are a Chinese cleaver, or a Santoku.

Edit: I just dug it out of my drawers, it's a Classic Ikon X 50 Cr MoV 15 4596/23cm

    Wusthof with that! 😲

This is a nice knife, bought it for $180. On the heavier side though.

  • +1

I wouldn't recommend this knife. The Ikon is much better.

Or for this price, go a Victorinox. The Bolster just makes the knife terrible to work with.

You can buy a Wusthof Classic Chef’s Knife 20cm + knife block for $99.95 delivered from Minimax

    • Is it the same model?

      • +1

        I hope so, I ordered one :D

According to sellers ebay listing. You will get a Wusthof's limited-edition Classic 20cm Cook's Knife (I don't know the meaning of 'limited-edition') + a knife block. Don't forget the 7% cashback from Cashrewards.
Other than 'limited edition', the knife is identical.

  • Can't add to cart: "Sorry, this colour / size combination is not currently available."

    • same, shame.

  • At first glance, I thought this was WUPHF brand.

  • The Classic Chef heel bolster is solid, so you can remove material from it safely while sharpening.
Because it is solid, it contributes a fair bit to the balance and feel of the knife, and heel bolster removal adds a lot to sharpening time if you're not using a machine.
The Ikon series doesn't have the bolster on the heel so sharpening is easier / faster. I don't own one but I think it would be an improvement.
