MS is now blocking all emulators already installed. Dev mode is now the only option.
Following up on this deal (which is still relevant for all other consoles), there is now a standalone Dolphin emulator instead of just the Retroarch core.
This gives much better performance. Even the Series S can emulate the vast majority of GameCube and Wii games upscaled to 1440p.
Steps:
- Join the Discord linked to.
Check the announcements rooms for the latest download link.
- This link needs to used in Edge on the Xbox directly.
- The apps get removed every few day. If you’ve already installed them and launched it at least once they’ll continue to work on your console. If the apps are removed before you install them - keep checking back for them to be re-uploaded.
Follow this guide, skipping the steps for installing it in Dev Mode (because you’ve already got it installed in Retail Mode).
Playing Mario Galaxy upscaled to 1440p on an Xbox without the motion controls is amazing.
Notes:
OzBargain (completely understandably) does not allow the discussion of illegal roms, so don’t ask. Dolphin itself is completely open source and legal.
One person reported getting a temporary ban for uploading screenshots of emulators to Xbox Live. Don’t be an idiot and do that and your account should be fine. There has been no one banned for simply installing and playing emulators on an Xbox One/Series
You can install this on an Xbox One, but the performance will be crap. Check out the other deal linked above for older consoles, Atari through to PS1.
Enjoy.
Have dolphin running on Macbook Pro with M1 Pro. Super Mario Galaxy in 4k has never looked better!
