Can this replace hot water system?

    • +5

      3.5l, for drink I suppose.

    • +2

      Yes

    • +3

Yes, it forces you to save water in shower.

      • +4

How would you shower using this??

Have used 2 x $7 kmart kettles to supply hot water for bath. Works great. Gives same amount of hot water as this each use.

        • +3

No idea, probably somewhere in backyard in a bucket with cold water.

          Original reply was just sarcasm.

          • +6

@Vater Woods: Realised it was sarcasm, but you may have had some useful ideas…

Recently bought a $40 12v shower pump from SuperCheap for $9.50 with voucher. They sent 2!

Can take a hot shower with it, but requires a larger supply of hot water. Handy for camping or off grid. But then this 240V 3.5L hot water dispenser would not be much use.

Had lived cheaply off grid for years.
Now in the city… Hot water system is $2k+ to replace. So sought alternatives.
Spent time in Japan. Prefer to take a nice hot bath, despite no hot water system šŸ›€

Save $hundreds/yr on hot water bills only heating when needed with Kmart kettlesšŸ’°
            (Not recommended for families!)

            • +2

@INFIDEL: I picked up one of these when my hot water system died to tide me over until the new govt rebates came out: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/363772604813?

If you like long hot showers you probably need something more powerful, but to take the edge off its quite decent coupled with a water saver shower head. You will save water too because as you increase thw flow it gets colder, so you have an incentive to keep it low.

This one is ok on any 10A power point, but if you were wanting to do this long term you probably want to get at least a 15A one (3600W) or more, actually probably 20A.

Would also be ideal for an outdoor pool shower if you didn't want straight cold, or any garden tap potentially where you needed warm but not necessarily hot water

              • @Jackson: Thanks. As I prefer 42C baths - it's not necessary. Might consider it. Only unknown is how to plumb into bathroom. Cheap enough!

Friends used a small tankless mains powered hot water heater - in forest in FN Qld. Shower was in a tree! Great hot showers in nature.

          • @Vater Woods: what is sarcasm?

  • Even cheaper than a kettle!

    • In the old days these were called an urn. But they were a bit bigger and made of steel.

I mean no need to always on standby, now I just use normal Kettle with Thermos

    • +3

My aunt had one, she'd unplug it before she went to bed and it would still be hot when she woke up because it's insulated. If you want you can plug it in again when you wake up and it'll likely do a 1/4 boil cycle to get back up to boiling again

  • -1

    Any around Canterbury area ?

  • Omg.. I almost bought this. It is $59 a week before in Coles.

  • +3

Got 1 of these before, it is ok for the people need a lot of hot water instantly. But i prefer instant hot water dispenser that only boil the water when needed, beside lower energy usage, the water boiled for too long taste difference.

    • +1

I use to have Panasonic but now I just use normal Kettle with Thermos, so that I don't need to have it always on standby.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/734753

      • I had the panasonic too, using Kettle with temp setting after, this https://www.amazon.com.au/Xiaomi-SciShare-Dispenser-Temperatā€¦ now.

      • I agree for a lower power bill as this is what I do everyday.

      • Ive always thought an insulated kettle would be a great idea. Boil once and then the water stays got for 6 hours in the kettle. Not sure if that make something like that.

        • +1

stays got for 6 hours in the kettle. Not sure if that make something like that

The thermos I bought is quite good, still hot (not boiling hot) next morning.

        • +1

Properly insulating a kettle is hard because you need an open spout.

If you seal the kettle (which you need to do so it's insulated) then you have a pressure vessel which needs extra safety devices.

However there are double walled kettles, for example
          https://kitchenaid.com.au/products/1-5l-design-electric-kettā€¦

          • @spaceflight: I was thinking the same thing, boiling water with no valve sounds like those recalled exploding pressure cookers.
Double walled kettle looks interesting, thanks for the link

      • +1

I have a thermos but no kettle.

I fill the thermos at work before I go home and the water is still hot in the morning.

Wow bought this on sale for $40 last week, down from its original $60. Handy to have around.

Making good use of it as the missus goes through a ridiculous amount of tea along with habits of probiding drinks to guests. And the kettle / thermos system only went so far.

    • Sounds like your Mrs is courteous

  • Would be good if you had solar to power it everyday. Not worth it now. Used to have these in my childhood but had a hand pull as well.

    • +4

but had a hand pull as well….

      • +3

God damn auto correct or me as I did rewrite the hat reply a couple of times. I mean ā€œHand pump..ā€ was a good forearm work out.

  • +1

How much electricity does this use? Usually we just do an electric kettle + 2L tiger flask to make tea and save electricity throughout the day.

    • i had similar one 10 years ago, i think it used quite a lot energy as it keep the water hot by reheat or reboil.

  • looks like this one continuously keep the h2o warm not like aunt Jemima's kettle and some fryin' chips. Hence you will be using energy the whole time.
    how about a spec sheet

    • I almost missed the last word of your post… and then I was wondering where you were going with that :)

    • +1

I will probably buy something like https://www.kmart.com.au/product/instant-hot-water-dispenserā€¦
I am not sure keep boiling the water is bad Or okay for health (there are debates over the web), but instant hot water dispenser could also save energy and have different temp hot water instantly, which could better for your baby or difference temp for your coffee, black or green tea.

  • Should I replace my hot water tap with this? I have too much kitchen bench space.

    • Should I replace my hot water tap with this?

This is for boiling water to drink

      • +1

Oh great, I love drinking a few cups of boiling water really fast first thing in the morning.

      • So you can't use the water from this in the sink?

  • Thanks OP.
Managed to find the last one at Wetherill Park, NSW.

  • where to find

    • Thomson 3.5L Hot Water Dispenser $19.99 @ Coles

  • spend a bit more like https://ottostore.com.au/products/scishare-s2102-1-8l-smart-ā€¦ or other brands. It heat water instantly when needed and choose the temp you wanted. Save energy + fresh warm/hot water taste better, had one of this 10 years ago, water boiled for too long taste different (bad). Or kettle plus Thermos is better.

  • +1

I use a Tiger šŸÆ water boiler and I love it. You can leave these on 24/7 due to excellent insulation. Water from it always tastes good. I canā€™t say the same for the auto water boilers we have at work so Tiger is doing something right. No idea about the quality of the water boiler in this post.

    • I've had instant hot water heaters before where they have a cold water tank at the back which then gets superheated and comes out boiling at the front in a few seconds, but never had an electric water heater, and the Tiger looks good.
How does this work though, does it keep turning on and off to keep all the water at the temperature you've set it at?
And what happens if say you've set it to 80ā·Ŗ but then want a drink at 98ā·Ŗ; does it instantly heat it to 98ā·Ŗ or do you have to wait a few minutes for all the water in the tank to be heated to 98ā·Ŗ?

      • I use Tiger thermal water bottles sometimes and they keep their temperature for hours, so Iā€™m pretty sure itā€™s the same with their water boilers. It probably heats the temperature back up every few hours.

If you set it at 80 and want to drink at 98 you can either change the temp to 98 and or hit the ā€œboilā€ button. Either way you will have to wait a minute for it to boil and it takes quite a while to drop back down in temperature. Still far more convenient than a manual boiler though. I leave mine at tea temp as I drink that all day.

        • +1

Thanks FB, that's good if it's got a boil button, sounds like it would be ideal.
My only concerns would be the tank is metal with a coating and is not stainless steel; some reviewers have complained about the coating coming off and the tank then rusting. And if the coating is like Teflon it may be leaching into the water.

          • @alidli: Yeah I read those reviews before buying mine. I havenā€™t had an issue. And when I travel in Japan these things are everywhere and some look very old. So Iā€™m not sure but I figured Iā€™d risk it.

  • Is there a website link to search our area for stock with as it won't allow me to search on my Coles app or website.

  • Few @greenacre NSW if anyone is still looking

  • +1

Can it still dispense water if it's not plugged in to the power? I'm hoping to use this instead of the thermos in the kettle + thermos method.

    • +1

Haven't tried, but highly doubt it.

These dispensers have an electric unlock button and use a pump in order to 'dispense'.

I guess you could open the lid and tip it out…but that defeats the point and turns it into a 3.5li kettle.

  • Seems like my local had some out back and put them out today.
