On sale is another Tuya-based smart IR Controller/Blaster. It's similar to this one previously shared except it lacks the temp/humidity monitor, has a USB plug for power.

These are good for controlling IR devices in your home like the TV and heatpump. You can use your phone as the remote or setup more complex actions with the use of other sensors. E.g. turning on the aircon or heater when a certain temperature is reached or turning on the humidifier when the humidity reaches a certain level.

It uses the Tuya Smart / Smart Life app and it's compatible with Home Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Google Home.

  • so the aircon must be newer model that has wifi? most old aircon is infrared only i think?

No. The Tuya part is WiFi and the Controller/Blaster is IR.

Phone sends command via WiFi to the controller and that sends the command to the heatpump via IR.

Interesting. Would love to make my ceiling fans work with this. How much power do you think the USB controller eats?

    • +1

I'd say very little. The power input required is only 5V/1A.

Thanks. Sorry, I read that in the add after asking here.

That's 5 watts. I need to find out how much that costs to run if I get 3. If it's like $5 a year, sweet! If it's $20, I'll have to think about it. Yes, I know. But $20 a year to control fans with my phone is more than I would like to pay.

        • I live in Queensland, and mine have never been turned off… if they're not helping with heat/ humidity, they're on to keep the air moving to reduce mould when it's raining.

        • +2

That's input power. There's no way that it would be consuming all of that, especially not continuously.

Be careful many fans use RF (radio frequency), this will not work in that circumstance. If there is no little LED Type bubble at the end of your remote, likely it’s RF.

  • Can this be used to turn on a pc?

  • zwave is much more reliable.

  • does this need line of sight for IR to connect to aircond?

    • +1

of course - IR isn't a radio wave

      • thanks.

Not entirely correct, the point of an IR blaster is to blast the signal out strongly so that it may bounce once or twice to get to the device. Good for a bunch of items in an entertainment unit with a door perhaps (if the blaster is within the unit) etc…

Does this have Sim card slot for internet to work?

    • It's an IR Blaster. You control IR devices with it through your phone and it connects to your wifi. Not sure what use a SIM card is.
