Why does the title say $355?

    • need to VPN to HK

      • +1

        1088 hkd = 195aud, I'm confused

        • What's confusing? HKD1088 is about AUD195. Normal FX rate.

          • +2

@BBF: @BBF: The title originally had it at $355 - it's been fixed now

            • @The Hobo: OK. I didn't realise it was edited. I now understand.

            • @The Hobo: The title did not have $355 in it at any stage.

              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/753404/revisions#1627430vs…

              • @Schema: The title was edited 2 minutes after posting. I used an old deal to fix the title and it had $355 for roughly 30 seconds. Definitely worth the 7 comment investigation here. 🕵️‍♂️

Can’t see that in the history. Can mods edit the history to hide their mistakes? If so, I think it’s completely understandable why people were confused.

                  • @PainToad: No, revision history just combines all edits within a minute or so into 1 edit for everyone.

              • @Schema: It’s been messed with, in the background.

What hotel is the best value to redeem the free night?

    • +29

Answering my own question. Free night is obviously best redeemed at Accors luxury hotels. Some examples below which are eligible for the free night.

      Sofitel Darling Harbour (Sydney, Australia)
Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa (Singapore)
Sofitel Noosa Pacific Resort (Noosa, Australia)
Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour (Auckland, NewZealand)
      Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit (Bangkok, Thailand)
Mövenpick Asara Resort & Spa Hua Hin (Prachuap Khirikhan, Thailand)

How do I check which hotels are eligible for a free night? Or are all hotels in the Accor portfolio eligible?

Do you know how to check if certain dates are available or is that not possible til signed up?

        • I would like to know as well

        • The earlier in advance you book, the more availability. In Sydney, if you book 3-4 months in advance you can book Sofitel on Friday/Saturday nights. But the closer the date, the harder it is. Weekend, room is valued at $500-600

There's a "open rate" calendar… you can stroll through the dates where you can use, stay plus nights.

      • +36

Just be aware, you have limited availabilty to use your "free" night, you can't just use it any night you want.

I've been looking to try use mine at the Sofitel Noosa — in the next three or four months unless you want to stay on a random Wednesday night there's pretty much no availabilty (certainly not on a weekend!)

Also checked in a weekend in March for the Sofitel Sydney when i'm going to be in town, again no availability (had to book with my amex fhr benefit and pay for it instead of getting a free night)

So my attempts to use it at any higher end ones are pretty much, that its a useless benefit, unless your plans to use it are extremely flexible. Also you have to use it within the year (you can't just book within the year for a stay outside of the 12 months)

The dining discount is okay, if you have enough of their hotels nearby to use it.

Be aware of the 3 times i've used it, one of the restaurants refused to honour it claiming they weren't part of the program even though they are clearly listed on their website as a location that you can use the discount at.

I contacted their customer service asking they reimburse me the benefit amount as it wasn't honoured, after months of back and forth and me asking for my concerns to be escalated, they offered 2000 points (which then didn't get added to the account).

Also the restaurant is still listed on their website as one you can use the dining benefit — so unsure if you might have this happen at their other restaurants.

Got it free with my amex, I wouldn't pay for it

        • Any chance you could check if there are any free nights in Sydney from the 31st of May until the 4th of June?

          • @xscape: Unless there is an event on that week or its school holidays, there is a high chance that you will be able to get a stayplus night because you are looking at midweek dates not just weekends.

I can't check personally for you because I have my stayplus allocated to a future booking so I can't see stayplus options.
I've not had any issues when searching for availability prior, admittedly not always my first preference being available but there were availabilities. I'm going to be staying Sydney end of Feb which is the weekend Ed Sheeran is in town but in December I could still get a stayplus night in Sydney for that weekend at more than one hotel. I ended up not booking stayplus as I was looking for a room with two beds and I couldnt find that at a hotel I was wanting to stay at but there were rooms with one bed.

          • +1

@xscape: me and my family got total 5 rooms in Sofitel Darling Harbour on 19th April 2023 for free….

        • +2

It’s a bit unfair to say “it’s not easy to redeem the free night”
More precisely is, it’s not easy to redeem the free night in a 5 star hotel

Since the stay plus (free night) availability is limited per hotel, it common to see those 5 star hotels like Sofitel has no available stay plus room, it’s same as redeeming business class rewards ticket using frequent flyer points, they are limited and sold out quickly

Given said that, I basically never have issue in finding a stay plus room in most days of the year if I extended the search to 4 stars hotel, even in school holidays still able to find a few if I book few months in advance. Eg. I use my stay plus free night for the September school holiday in Novotel Oasis Resort in Cairns, standard Accor plus room fee is $360

        • Checking a couple months out is very hard to get the higher end hotels. Book further out and you’ll find space even at the Sofitel.

          • @Diplomats: just booked one free night at Sofitel Darling harbour on the June long weekend (sunday) no issue with availability.

unless its a long weekend, usually available on a sat and sun

        • +3

Just be aware, you have limited availabilty to use your "free" night, you can't just use it any night you want.

This is why I can't be bothered with any sort of membership scheme. They always promise the world, then when you try to use it there's some reason why you can't.
I actually went to an Accor Club promo night one time years ago where they offered a free night just for listening to their sales pitch. I thought well I'll go along check it out and the worst is I say no and get a free night out.
The sales pitch turned out to be hard core high pressure selling to the point where they got mad at you if you didn't buy it. Then when it came time to claim the free night surprise, surprise they never had any dates available at any time ever.

          • @1st-Amendment: That's an Accor Vacation club and not Accor Plus. You should know what you are signing up to

            • @regenade:

You should know what you are signing up to

Didn't sign up to anything. All I know is that I now associate the name Accor with trash, which is not a great success story for them.

        • can you tell us which one so we can all avoid

        • You can roll the nights over.

      • +1

        How about the Maldives?

      • I think Sofitel Darling Harbour is now Unavailable

    • If you are in Sydney definitely Sofitel darling harbous

  • Is the membership worth it?

    • +2

Depending on eligibility for the complimentary night, it could pay for itself… Silver benefits are pretty limited though.

    • +6

This includes a free night, which is often about the same value depending where you stay… So the membership is essentially free then.

Beyond that, once you have membership it's 50% off dining when 2+ people are dining together at accor restaurants.

It's also 10% off rooms instead of 5%, but that's the same as code MCAP01 which also includes free breakfast

      • is this code open to everyone? i did try it but it seems i'm only getting 5% discount still?

        • +1

Open to everyone, doesn't work at every hotel

You should also get breakfast included free

Edit: Seems I have more success with it when it's a short notice booking (within next 3 days), doesn't say that in the terms though? Note it's meant to be a MasterCard promo but works anyway

          • @Dyl: Which one gets free breakfast? Mastercard promo? I seems can't find the hotels with free breakfast. Probably not every hotel? Thanks

            • @Bargain-er: MCAP01 MasterCard promo

Payment is still on checkin (checkout with gold+ status / certain hotels) and they don't check what card it is

Seems it only works for bookings upto a few days in advanced, couldn't find exact terms for it

              • @Dyl: Ah right, the hotel I booked doesn't show the free breakfast but months away. Thought it will only applicable to particular hotels but apparently only a few days in advance? Thanks

      • can i use this code when i use the stayplus free night voucher?

        • I don't believe so

    • +2

Just don't get into the trap of only considering Accor Hotels next time you need a hotel. More likely than not there will be better value hotels that is not Accor or a better deal using other booking websites.

This is free with the Amex play right? Well not free, but Included as an option

    • Yes included with amex platinum charge

      • Amex Platinum Charge used to give you platinum status as well as the free night. So you'd have instant lounge access, and all the rest, right off the bat.

        • Wait really? Thought the highest was gold.

          • @nightelves: Diamond is the top status now. Was introduced in 2019.

            In order it is:
            Diamond
            Platinum
            Gold
            Silver
            Classic

          • +5

            @nightelves:

Wait really? Thought the highest was gold.

It's just another version of shrinkflation. Gold was the best, until they needed a new best to lure in more suckers. So then Platinum becomes the new best. Rinse repeat for Diamond, Godly, Unobtanium etc etc.

Got to keep the rats running otherwise who will power the treadmill?

        • Really when did they stop this? I've had my Plat Charge since 2016 and top tier wasn't an option then

          • @jaygee: Think back then top tier didn’t offer breakfast at all. Now their Platinum and Diamond tier offers breakfast and lounge access to be in line with other major hotel chain.

        • Technically Platinum Charge only gives Silver via Accor Plus. There have been some who were given Platinum, but this is the exception not that norm.

  • +2

Anyone know how the 'free night's works?
I've got a night in Sydney next month and yet to book any accom and some of the Accor places look to be $500+ for the night I need.

    • Subject to availability so hard to get at short notice / weekends / top hotels.

Akin to scoring a business class seat using frequent flyer points.

    • You book it like you would a normal hotel stay through Accor's app, although they do have blackout dates (which they don't list for the free night, annoyingly). I probably wouldn't pay for membership if I I had a particular stay date in mind though, but also I had no problem booking the property on the night I wanted: a room at the Sofitel Darling Harbour in Sydney that would've cost $450 otherwise.

  • How much is accor plus in aus usually

  • +2

I had to cancel a free night due to covid lockdown and they refused to do anything but let it disappear like magic. Buyer beware.

    • +4

If you cancel a free night it is immediately returned to your account without penalties.

Source: I've done it several times.

      • +3

Yes even the T&C says it goes back to the account.

For some reason it didn’t happen and they refused to acknowledge the T&C or do anything to put it back.

      • +1

Can confirm have done it multiple times as well.

      • Not sure about COVID but I always book room that has free cancellation condition
have been always able to cancel and the free night will come back to my account within 1-2hours

    • Strange… i've cancelled mine several times, and free night returned back to the account.

They even let you roll over the free night to next year.

  • +9

Signed up with Accor Plus for a single year ten years ago. My mate, who recommended it for a specific purpose (2 week travelling holiday through NZ) but also warned me, said that he still got repeated calls to resubscribe,

Didn’t really listen. Still get calls to this day, average about 2-4 a year from new numbers each time. Desperate to sign me back up to the program, despite my clear lack of interest.

      • +23

It’s not too bad really. Once you read enough passive aggressive comments on internet forums you tend to just gloss over most petty annoyances. But I thought I’d mention the fact that your contact details become a commodity to Accor Plus sales reps seeking sign-on commissions.

    • -6

All well and good but what's your point here?

    • Yep their sales mal practices is the reason I don’t want anything to do with them.

  • +2

Yeah, it is a good deal if you compare the cost for the Australian version. However, the membership is pretty pointless. I get it free with my Amex and hardly use it.

    • the 50% off dining sounds pretty good, no?

      • +1

Yah it is - if you use it. I don’t often find that I go to hotel restaurants very much anyway. But when I do get to use it, it was great. Just wouldn’t go out of my way to do so.

    • The free night usually offsets the cost of the membership if you use it at one of their 5 star hotels e.g Sofitel, Pullman, MGallery

    • +1

      This is a paid membership
meaning if you pay for it and never use it, its always a waste of money (same as most other paid memberships like gym)

I have been a paid membership for 3 years (since COVID) and I still feel value for it
      Here are my takeout:

      • Been using Accor dining discounts at least once a month, one of the accor restaurant is just 5mins walking distance away from my home, already saved me > $500 per year
      • While I normally don't book for a 5 star hotel stay, never have issues booking for a 4 star hotel and redeem the free night (valued at around $200-300)
      • Accor plus used to give fast track program in last 2 years (2021, 2022), with 2021 also have double status nights, was able to achieve "platinum" Accor status by just staying 12 nights in 2021. Platinum status included free lounge access and complimentary breakfast (valued depends on stay but I would value it at $200)
      • Booking rooms via Accor plus has a guarantee 10% off RRP, since joining the membership I no longer need to always finding promo codes for Adoga, Hotels.com etc to get discounts. Also, only booking via Accor website will be able to use Accor members benefit and accumulate status nights
  • +1

Also question. Is the free Night limited to a 2 person room or can you book a family room for free too.

      • You’ll have to pay extra for that.

      • I have no issue in redeeming my free night for a room with 2 x queen size bed (stay up to 4) in Cairns Novotel oasis resort (standard night is $360)
Once you login in accor plus website you can filter which hotel can use the complimentary night

      • I have booked 2 x double bed room at Sofitel Darling Harbour using stayplus on a Saturday night. I'm paying $45 to upgrade the room from standard to Darling harbour view. The same room without stayplus was $695 when I booked.

    • +1

Beware that this promo is only for new membership
renewal will go back to $1588HKD (~$293)
