What Is Your Favourite Type of Coffee?

As I sit here sipping on my Vietnamese iced coffee acknowledging how lucky I am to live here and most importantly — how much the Aboriginals have sacrificed for us to have what we have — I can't help but know it in my bones that Vietnamese iced coffee is 110% my unequivocal favourite type of coffee, the kind that I can happily drink for the rest of my life.

  • I used to frequent a cafe that made something called a Dutch coffee. It was a flat white with fresh whipped cream on top + free donuts. This was my favourite coffee ever. Unfortunately I don’t live near that coffee shop anymore.
Is one of the ones on the list equivalent to this?

    • Sounds interesting, I've just added it to the poll. I tried to make the poll as exhaustive as I could (I don't know 100% all the types of coffee available on the planet).

What cafe was it? Might have to give it a shot when/if I'm nearby sometime.

      • Geos Frankston

Thanks, now I can vote on the poll.

        • +2

Cool, looks like the place is still around, if it's the one in Karingal Hub.

    • +1

The coffee part of that sounds like a Vienna coffee.

      • +1

Except that a Viennese coffee is black, not white.

    • agreed - on our last drive around Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands we decided that the Netherlands was our favourite country and Dutch coffee was the best.

    • +1

Dutch coffee. It was a flat white with fresh whipped cream on top

      That's not a Dutch Coffee

Dutch Coffee is a coffee brewing method that originates from the golden ages. Contrary to commonly known brewing techniques Dutch Coffee is brewed using cold water instead of hot water. Although brewing Dutch Coffee takes somewhere in between 3 to 6 hours

  • theres no coffee in a Babycino

    • +2

Thank you for that, I will remove from the poll (sorry to the one person who voted for that haha).

        • +4

It slipped my mind there's no coffee in a babycino, most of the list I came up with myself.

And people might still like the frappucino specifically. McDonald's frappe is quite close to it in the sense that it has whipped cream and chocolate sauce/syrup on top.

        • -1

Might as well remove mocha then…

  • Are you sure it's not Thai for you?

    • +5

Yes, we're talking about coffee not lady boys.

      • +1

        lol

        If you say so!

      • +1

I can recommend a good boat tour in Phuket if we were 🙃

  • +11

Just came back from Vietnam and thinking I should check my blood sugar levels after all those cafe sua das!

  • +5

I like long black but not Americano, long black is a stronger coffee.

    • +1

I lumped them in for simplicity's sake, but considering the poll has blown out anyway I've separated them just for you.

      • +2

I can now with a clear conscience choose long black as favourite. Thanks!

      • +2

Ordering at a new place is always a risk. I’ll go short black if they let it run a bit, but not a ristretro style teaspoon of liquid, so generally say 3/4 long black in the hopes of a strong espresso with a bit of extra volume.

Just “long black” risks them filling the cup too much, or the horror of a mug of filter coffee if you say Americano.

        • +1

When you order a long black, how tf do you drink it? I have to wait like two hours before it’s at a temperature that doesn’t sear my taste buds off.

          • @jrowls: Blow and sip. Don't gulp it. That's uncouth.

          • @jrowls: When I make it at home I use less hot water. I don't understand why every cafe uses near boiling water.

            • +3

@Aureus: Its because of that one Karen who said their long black was too cold.

          • +2

@jrowls: A guy I used to work with would ask for exactly three ice cubes in his long black lol.

Normally when I get one I just take the lid off, it cools down a bit quicker that way.

            • +1

@Ghost47: lmao that is one strategy i guess? haha.

yeah i find the lid strategy works well enough, but the (more watery?) nature of long blacks seems to lead to a very narrow sweet spot (for me) in terms of temperature compared to a milk drink. one sip burns the tip of my tongue, a later sip is perfect, then my next is too cold lol.

          • @jrowls: Order extra hot and a large ice cube.

    • +2

They should be the same strength, they both have the same amount of coffee and water. The only difference is that (when made with an espresso machine) an americano has the shot before the water, and a long black has the water before the shot. The water being added after clears most of the crema which makes it similar to a filter coffee like most Americans have.

      • -1

One method burns the Coffee and other doesn't. Putting the boiling water first means it drops it's temperature.

        • You shouldn't be adding boiling water to coffee at all. If you burn the coffee with boiling water that's a fault of the operator, not the type. The added water - whether added before or after the shot - should be just above 90 degrees, same as the water used for the shot.

  • +3

    No FUIC given?
Has outsold Coke in the past
    .

    • Fair point! Added.

    • +1

      No fuics given

  • +3

Really depends on venue, as long as not using Vittoria

  • +3

I need way more than one vote from that list. Yum.

    • Too bad, you have to pick your absolute favourite, the type you could happily order for the rest of your life.

  • Magic, but it’s not on the list.

    • Added just for you. I've heard of Magic coffee before but never had one. Is it like a strong flat white or something?

      • A Magic is a double espresso with heated milk

        • +6

I'll bite. Double ristretto not espresso.

      • +1

        As dasher86 mentioned.

Keen to know your thoughts if you try it.

        • +1

Next time I go into the office I'll check if the cafe next door knows how to make one (and hopefully they do it properly, i.e. ristretto). Sounds like a tasty coffee, and the name is also pretty fantastic! Love that it was invented in Melbourne.

  • +2

Quad table spoon Nescafé blend 43 with 250ml boiling hot water hits the spot for me usually. The point of coffee isn’t to enjoy it, the point of coffee is to SUFFER, so you know when the good times are :)

    • +1

I totally forgot about instant coffee. I’m no coffee snob and will happily drink Blend 43 or Moccona if it’s the only thing available. Will add to poll.

    • +4

Interestingly (or probably not), in a previous job the change from moccona to nescafe and from twinings to tetley were the first indications that redundancies were on the horizon.

Once time had passed and things were doing well again, the remaining staff were able to win back the good stuff…. Until the cycle repeated.

      • Huh, so Moccona is a leading indicator of redundancies (maybe even economic performance)… who'd a thunk it. Would be interesting to correlate Moccona sales with GDP lol.

I guess when you start seeing International Roast around the business that's when you know you're royally (profanity).

  • +1

latte is most balanced, then you get use to it. now i drink almond caps because i don't feel anything from the latte anymore. took me about 2-3 years to move up to caps that are strong per volume do to less liquid milk in the recipe.

    • The chocolate kills it for me. Try a piccolo, best coffee drink.

      • lol
i make it at home, i don't use chocolate. just coffee, water, almond milk.

      • Only cappuccino or mocha should have any chocolate by default.

  • Cold brew espresso with a shot of heavy cream

    • Didn't think of cold brew. Added it to the list.

      • Hehe, significantly different taste to any other brewing method ;)

    • +1

What exactly is cold brew espresso? By definition espresso requires heat and pressure no?

      • Use an espresso bean (dark roast) for cold brew ;)

  • +3

about 30 yrs when down on my luck in Brissie, had occasion to visit a charity coffee truck that used to stop by the river in South Brisbane and they used to make the best espresso with a touch of chicory in it, so nice, esp when feeling blue on a Sunday morn

  • +5

Latte. With the milk thick and silky and strong flavour. I find a lot of places make weak tasting lattes with too much foam or not steamed enough so the milk is too flat. But at the end of the day it's about the caffeine so who cares.

    • +1

I find a lot of places make weak tasting lattes with too much foam or not steamed enough so the milk is too flat.

That's the worst, when you buy a coffee and it's either too weak and/or the milk isn't steamed properly.. especially when it's not hard to make a decent coffee.

      • +2

Buy a small and ask for an extra shot. Will make it taste stronger and less milky. And it actually is hard to make a decent coffee, which is why very few cafes do.

    • Don't get me started on when cafes think a flat white, latte and a cap (with no choc) is the same coffee.

      • Well they aren’t all that different… what I mean is the difference is subtle and the 16 yo “barista” on minimum wage is unlikely to appreciate the difference

    • What about a Kaffee Schnapps??

  • +1

Cap or Black depends on the time of day

  • +1

Coffee and Orange juice. Apparently it's a thing.

Surprised the polla don't include the most famous coffee drink in the world, Orange Mocha Frappuccino.

    • Lol isn’t Frappuccino some made up Starbucks thing?

    • The acidity of the coffee somehow resonates with the orange juice and it's not… Great but not terrible either

    • +1

      Orange Mocha Frappuccino.

      What is this abomination?

Anyway, frappuccino is in the poll. This… thing… can be voted for there.

    • +1

      Orange Mocha Frappuccino

I can just hear the intro of Wake Me Up Before You Go Go……………….

      • +1

ORANGE MOCHA FRAPPUCCINO!!! "Jitterbug!", click, click, click, click "Jitterbug!"

  • +2

Most cafes make lattes, flatwhites and cappuccinos the same with the latter just having chocolate sprinkled.

Cold brew with milk, Vietnamese iced coffee and a recent favourite Vienna. Basically espresso coffee, a heap of whipped cream and chocolate sprinkled on top.

    • Oh man Vienna coffee reminds me of the 90s. I used to have Vienna chocolate as a kid with my mum.

      • I know right! I went to an Italian cafe and suddenly remembered it.

  • +1

So many coffees to try thanks to this list, thanks OP!

  • +1

Why no 'white hot chocolate mocha with whipped cream'?… venti of course

    • That counts as a Mocha lol.

  • Filter (moccamaster or pour over). I don’t think it’s on the list, or at least I didn’t see it.

    • Hmm, I added it in for you, considering I also have cold brew in there, which I would say are both methods of brewing coffee and not specifically coffee drinks which is what I was aiming for, despite the title being "what's your favourite type of coffee".

How do you drink it after brewing? Is it like a long black?

      • +1

you drink it black, but it’s completely different from a long black. A long black is espresso based (2 shots + water). Filter coffee is not extracted under pressure and, therefore, has a completely different taste and texture.

Cold brew is completely different again, because the coffee is extracted at low temperature and without pressure, which sets it apart on its own. I notice someone put “cold brew espresso”. That is an oxymoron. Espresso is a high temp high pressure extraction. Cold brew is a pressure-less cold extraction.

        • It's 1 am and both sound quite tasty… sadly I'll have to wait, otherwise I won't get any sleep tonight.

  • +3

Nearly everyone I know makes coffee the same way. They pull a shot (or 2), then they froth the milk, then pour the frothed milk on top of the shot. So everyone is basically getting the same coffee: espresso with frothed milk.

What differs is the type of milk, or the type of coffee beans or the strength of the shot, or whether they grind the beans themselves or use pre-ground coffee.

    • +2

I agree that most places must make the same thing. I reckon in most cafes you could go in and ask for a Magic, a Latte and a Flat White and walk out with 3 near identical drinks.

  • +1

I live in Springvale so Ca Phe Sua Da for me as well for the last 15+ years.

    • Springy represent! What's your go-to in Springvale? I was going to Cafe Pho but recently switched to Cafe Phu Khanh which IMO is way better (cheaper and bigger size too).

  • Flat white is supposed to have a dual shot, right???

Whenever I take a small cappuccino, flat white or latte, I almost tell no difference.

    • +1

Nope, no dual shot for a flat white.

      • +2

        Originally, yes, two shots!
"You can make cappuccinos and lattes with one or two shots of espresso, but a flat white traditionally features two"

  • Cortado for me :D

    • Interesting, didn't realise this was a drink. Added to the poll, Rei!

    • +1

Isn't s cortado very much like a piccolo?

      • +1

In a similar way that a latte is kind of like a flat white. Compared to a piccolo, cortado is stronger/has less milk (1:1 ratio) and very little foam.

  • +1

    Tea.

  • +2

There's more Viet ca phe lovers than what I was expecting, that's great, Trung Nguyen FTW!

    • +1

I get mine fresh roasted from Eastland Supermarket in Cabramatta.

      • Cabra represent! Don't mind me an iced coffee from Tan Viet even when it's like $7 lol.
