WoW~~~2.7K for a bike , you can buy a cheap second hand car as well

    • +11

have you checked the price of second hand cars lately? :)

    • +3

And then spend another few hundred on rego, insurance and a few thousand on maintenance and fuel.

    • +2

Ebike. (Although plenty of pushbikes cost well north of $2k.)

Realistically as a mode of transport, an Ebike can handle 40km commutes with luggage, zero parking, recharge for cents and can do most of the maintenance yourself. Can ride on both road and cycle paths. It's replaced my suburb to CBD train commutes for 2yrs - that's an offset of $1~1.5K+ already.

Although for this price point I'd say go with a Cube with Bosch mid drive system instead.

      • +1

Plus the priceless gain cost of movement rather then sitting still in a car or a train

    • +1

A decent geared rear hub motor kit is around $500.
A flat-bar road-bike of this quality and component level is $400.
A battery of this size is around $400 retail too.

So now we are up to $1300, which should be the price of a mass-produced eBike of this quality, though assembly will cost a bit more if you go the custom route.

I guess the other $1399 if for the weird frame, which will also cost you some extra kilograms!

    • +1

But you need to pay rego every year for car

  • +2

I really cannot get my head around the price of e-bikes.

    • you're not alone

  • +1

Anyone into bikes who can compare this to, say, a Lekker X? What makes it worth the extra $700 (or $1400 when comparing both RRP)?

    • +1

The Lekker seems better of the two. Hub drive hybrid/commuter ebikes are a standard formula, and I'd go with the company with a longer history.

  • +2

After riding a Cube emtb (Bosch motor for two years now) I would highly recommend going down this path for this price range.

    Example…
    https://www.99bikes.com.au/cube22-nuride-hybrid-performance-…
(Just checked availability might be fun with some of these models)

    Club price $2995

Best of all you can get a heap of 10-15% off Ultimate gift cards from Coles or Woolies (During those sales) to reduce it further!

    • Agree, for this price point go with a Bosch mid drive system, branded battery.

      • Why would a recreational/commuting rider need a bosch mid-drive?!
A much cheaper rear, or even front hub would do, I'd say.

        • I mean from a like for like price point comparison. For $2.7k you can get a Cube with a Bosch mid instead of this bike.

Also the other point for buying a system like Bosch or Shimano is reliability and safety (eg battery)

          • @ShoeyAU: Agreed but people do not need a Bosch mid
Any bafang hub would be plenty good (if not better on chain and transmission, etc - but let's not go there) for the average Joe

          • +1

@ShoeyAU: I agree at this price why compromise with a rear/front hub.

My Bosch has 3000+ kms without an issue on the same battery (not sure how this would compare with something like this). Those 3000+ kms are not easy k's either most of them involve hauling myself and my 2 kids up and down fire trails in a mountain.

I'm not saying Bafang is not capable, the motors have a place, but at this price point you need to start looking at your options.

            • @GhostDC: Mid-drive is great for off-road, cargo bikes or mountain climbs, but also has disadvantages.
For urban commuting, a rear hub motor is probably better.

  • +1

any one can compare it with the recent Benz bike deal?

  • +2

"On Sale" before they're even for sale. Feels like rug shop sale policy.

  • +1

This is massively overpriced for a rear drive bafang powered bike.
I ride an Aventon Soltera 7s, $2099. Unreal bike.

  • +1

Everything I've ever pre-ordered ends up cheaper once there's stock on the site.

  • +2

Meh all these pre made bikes… no power nothing rather get this befang 1000w motor and attach it on a 1k or 1.5k mountain bike win win.

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004679667470.html?spm=a2…

    • That's a great idea for mountain biking, but the above bike is for a totally different purpose.

      • +1

it will work with any bike but using a maintain bike pretty much gives you all terrains to ride on including the one for which the above bike is designed for. Its a no brainer.

    • 1000W would be great, but sadly anything over 250W is illegal in all states in public places.

Edit: or install the 1000W motor and buy these 250W stickers!

      • well everything is illegal until they find a way to tax you, most enforcers wouldnt even know and your correct just replace the stickers..

  • How on earth can you leave this at the shops, anywhere???? Its not a matter of if it will get stolen but when.

  • It's called mark up price, don't believe the 1k discount

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/birdbike-v-frame-electric…

  • It's a nice-looking bike, very light for a full-sized ebike @ 23kg.

However, $2700 for a hub motor and cadence pedal sensing is a bit pricy. You could find a mid-drive drive motor for that price (with torque sensing).

  • I've been looking at the Mamba Venom https://www.pedl.com.au/products/mamba-venom-48v-750w-15ah-1…

Looking at the specs it seems a better option also saving $900 in the process…
