  • How does GreenPan compare to KitchenAid? I'm looking for an induction friendly set.

    • I dunno if things have changed but their non stick is rubbish, everything sticks after two washes from the three green pans I had…land fill.

      • This kind of seems obvious, but are you treating the non-stick pans right?

      • +6

I had the same experience with ScanPan… when I wrote to complain, the condescending cretins sent a response stating that it was a maintenance issue not a manufacturing issue and set a picture of a scourer with instructions on how to use it… will never buy their junk again.

        • I had the same experience except I actually thought oh jeez I’m shit. Followed their instructions and it looked cleaner but as expected, the frypan performed liked shit again the very next use as the non stick layer was defective (not just dirty as they claimed).

        • +4

Scampan is just overpriced. I bought a whole set long time ago and at the time the non-stick coating degraded quickly like any other cheap non stick pan. It was probably me since I used them for all occasions.

Since then I'll use inexpensive non stick cookware (I've got 2 Aldi Crofton non stick pans) for low temp cooking and leave the high heat stuff to carbon steel or cast iron pans. The Croftons work really well and have lasted a very long time with very little wear.

        • Wow! How rude. Yep, their stainless stuff is expensive rubbish…. a total mess. The non-stick stuff is really good, but would never buy the stainless again.

      • Had a similar issue and take for care of my pans pretty well

        don't buy non-stick it's mostly toxic..

How does KitchenAid compare to Tefal gang? It seems to me that the price range is similar between these two brands

    • +1

There's good Tefal (made in France) and OK Tefal (made… errrr, not in France). The French made stuff is much better than Scanpan, the other stuff is generally on par with Scanpan.

Interested in some of the BK frypans - anyone bought one before?

    • +8

@JuryWheel @momo1988 I purchased one of the BK pans in November (same company as GreenPan). It warped/lost shape on my ceramic cooktop on its first use (I followed directions to a T - e.g. washed, didn't use high heat). I got in touch with customer service immediately, but almost 3 months am yet to get a meaningful response other than "we are still looking into this for you". Would not recommend based on this ongoing experience and imagine induction would be more risky (faster heat up likely to warp).

      • have you since found any better carbon steel pans? I want one but I don't know where to start!

        • +1

I have the BK black wok. It's great but you need to know how to maintain a carbon steel pan. I don't use soap to wash it, just warm water and a brush.

          • +4

@EELS: This is actually a misconception that leads to a lot of people having very dirty cast iron or carbon steel.
It's from the day when soap contained Lye, and lye will eat straight through your seasoning.

Modern soaps do not contain lye, and are safe to use on top of your seasoning. The seasoning is a polymerization of fats and without lye or acid is quite hard to remove. Feel free to use soap and a brush when washing it, but don't let it drip dry. Towel dry and then additional drying on the stovetop under heat to stop flash rust!

Got the de buyer mineral B 26cm frypan. Very thick and heavy so it's unlikely to warp if you don't give it a thermoshock. Even had my sister getting one for her first carbon steel

    • +1

bought one before. whenever I used and cleaned it, you have to heat it up to get a water free surface, any moisture on top would cost it rust. I m not sure if i m doing it right but it is a frypan really difficult to deal with.

      • +2

Buy the bk don't cook with citrus or tomato in it and it will do you well wash by hand

      • Did you season the pan properly with oil and regularly maintain it?

        • yea, pretty much everytime after washing it.

    • +2

have had one for about 1 year now and it works well. I use a gas stove, so not sure if thats better for it but no warping or anything on hight heat or otherwise. I've heard of warping on other brands too, just not sure if it's a user issue or the product but i've never had an issue with my carbon steel or cast iron pans (touch wood).
Got this one as it's cheap as chips and people can use it without me getting too upset about the pan being left in the sink to rust LOL

      • +2

I use a gas stove, so not sure if thats better for it but no warping

AFAIK, the warping would likely not even be noticed by a gas stove since the pan isn't required (or able to, really) to sit flush against a perfectly flat glass or metal cooktop which is when you'd notice and care about warping

        • +1

Seems pretty even when I put it on the counter top…

    • Love their all steel woks with a flat base.

  • +4

Why are people so enthralled by Kitchenaid cookware? Ridiculously overpriced. Their mixers, absolutely worth it, but buy pots and pans based on their materials, not their brand. The BK carbon steel items seem well priced in this sale.

    • +4

"buy pots and pans based on their materials, not their brand" unfortunately the likes of Tefal are best selling with mediocre materials…

Today I also discovered Chinese and Aboriginal fusion.. not food, but kitchenware.. please marvel at… The Wokarang..

    • +2

Did not know that was a thing. But now I want one (an excellent design idea)

      • It's a great design for keeping the contents in when you toss, but defeats the original purpose of tossing in the first place (touching the fire).

        • You toss contents to get an even cook also, so not completely useless and most people don't have a giant flame anyway

    • Uncle Roger approved?

      • +1

Uncle Roger had an Australian Aboriginal girlfriend and had a couple of babies. He approved the fusion.

    • Guaranteed to return itself for a full refund

    • Bought one last week - Comes pre-seasoned and really easy to use. Wife loves it because she can leave the wok on the heat while 'tossing'

Video of how to use it

      • Can you use the wokarang on gas cooktops? The one on myer says induction hob

        • +1

The pictures used in the promo shots are all gas, so you'd think so

        • yep, we use it on gas no issues. I believe it can also work with induction cooktops

  • +7

Prices look fairly normal to me, with fake RRP. Closer to perhaps 5-10% savings in reality.

do your own homework regarding Tefal being carcinogenic and other nonstick surfaces, especially the cheap ones…

    • +1

They also end up costing more money in the long run because you need to buy them again and again

    • +1

its not tefal… its the coating, dont matter what brand it is, if you're concerned, u should just cook on non coated stuff…

      • What about those 'granite' coating ones?

        • +1

granite coating refers just to the pattern and colour , its still teflon…

        • Try ceramic coatings or go the way of a stainless steel frypan

      • Yeah they probably mean Teflon

    • +2

Yes do your homework and you will see it's not an issue in modern times

      • Yeah to buy time and make sales until they figure out the new coating is even worse.

    • They said since 2019 it’s not toxic and cancer causing anymore.

      • +1

        "They" 😅

      • Yeah to buy time and make sales until they figure out the new coating is even worse.

They: 'hey everyone, it doesn't cause cancer'
        Consumers: 'uhh ok'
They: laugh like Mr. Burns and go 'excellent'

  • Works with $10 myer coupon if you got one recently.

    Bought the bangarang

    • +1

But you have to spend > $100 dollarydoos for the coupon?

      • I used it for under $100 purchase.

      • +1

Email said you need to spend $100, but like previous deals, it still worked for me on a $49 purchase (the wokarang)

        • Oh shit. I'm gonna cancel my order and retry it.

  • +1

Why does the wokarang say induction hob but the pictures show gas cooktop?

  • Picked up a BK Carbon Steel skillet! Thanks OP, quite a good price I think.

  • I got a rice cooker.
The Breville rice box. The price was good with the cashrewards $10 extra back.

  • +1

I bought OXO frying pans from Amazon they are amazing best so far for the price.
Have been using them for over 3 months now havent had any issue with the non stick coating so far!!

Green pans are the worst followed by Baccarat!

    • Everything OXO is pretty good afaik

  • Best to go for one of the carbon steel or a cast iron for cooking steak?

    • +2

Both are good, Cast Iron just takes longer to heat up.
Probably if you are cooking many steaks cast would be better as it has more thermal mass.

I will use my carbon steel for charring veggies, as I don't have to wait for the cast iron to heat up and its lighter.
