First post, please forgive mistakes.

Dropped to an ATL of $189 according to the 3 C’s alert. Max 3 x QTY per order (Update 11 Feb 12AM price has decreased). Umart has price matched @ 199 but no free shipping.

Not cheaper than this anywhere else that I can see via staticice. This also has the advantage of being Amazon AU stock.

Please keep in mind two things before purchasing:

  1. some analysts are projecting NAND prices to drop a lot a this year, as much as 50% (I am not an analyst, DYOR)

  2. There are some reports from a single party that 2TB and 4TB switched to QLC NAND. If so TBW will be impacted.

Having said that only buy these if you need them now, though since it’s Amazon AU, you should have an easy time returning 👍.

If someone does buy them, please report back here on what you got (if you know how). It’s been like 4 threads on unconfirmed hearsay apart from the blogpost, which whilst convincing, we need multiple sources for to be sure.

  • Also please excuse whatever the hell is going on with the tags. I was editing as the mod did and it’s just refusing to keep the mod added tag of “Crucial MX500”. (At least I can’t see it on my end)

    • If you can see the "Related Products" box showing the product tag on the deal post, that means it's tagged already.

The other tags that show up on the bottom of the deals are "implicit" tags, that is, tags are implied with the product. In this case it's the brand name of the product and the product category. We often manually add other tags as necessary, for example storage capacities for storage media and inches for displays / TV's or laptops.

Copying in some context around that report of MX500 using QLC NAND, here's the original (sole) source:
    https://theoverclockingpage.com/2022/07/27/review-crucial-mx…
And a comment from the author (Gabriel Ferraz):
    https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/rumour-that-mx500…

Oh that's my sheet haha, i did it when i reviewed my Crucial MX500 1TB when i bought it from Aliexpress.

i Wrote the review, yes there are QLC Variants, although all i could find were from reports from buyers from Aliexpress, i had encounters many MX500 from my country's stores and all had TLC dies, but some variants coming from Aliexpress had QLC variants indeed, a friend of mine had one with N48R dies

Thanks for calling on people to report what they find. It's probably good practice to keep up the public awareness of what goes into SSDs in general. Although, we can't really confirm that something doesn't exist.

    • +14

QLCs should be illegal, so should Shingled hard drives and TN monitors. They are inferior garbage technology, only fit for landfill.

    • I've just received my order. How do I check if it's a QLC variant? Besides running CrystalDiskMark after opening the box, is there a batch number we can refer to on the box?

      • +2

Opening the enclosure to check markings on the chips themselves would be one way, but there's understandably going to be hesitation to do that.

@netsurfer previously mentioned this program, though there seemed to be some issue? It may be able to show something for Silicon Motion (SMI) controllers:
        http://vlo.name:3000/tmph/smi_flash_id.rar
Extract and run "smi_flash_id_ata.exe" (there are 2 other .exe in the .rar). It should ask to select the drive to check. There might be issues inspecting drives with certain partitions on them.

e.g. MX500 1TB Windows OS drive gives an error:

A non-system drive gives the below (shortened at "…"). So this seems to be a MX500 1TB with SM2258AB controller, Micron 64 layer B16A TLC NAND, 1GB DRAM. https://www.techpowerup.com/ssd-specs/crucial-mx500-1-tb.d77

So no way to tell before opening up the packaging …
I'll have to take one for the team then.

          • @ofey: The utility doesn't seem to work for the newer MX500 so the only way to tell without opening it is to run a sustained write test, but that involves filling the drive up until a point it reaches the NAND write speed. It's time consuming.

  • Combine this with the umart amex offer $50 back for $300 spend

  • Does the difference of $40 worth it with this one?

Go crucial for sure at this price.

If you decide to save money, the SP is cheaper through eBay with vouchers applied.

    • I bought a 1TB A55 recently and am using it purely for games. Works well enough.

If using it as a primary drive I'd definitely go for the Crucial.

  • Damn! just purchased a 1TB in the weekend for an upgrade on the PS4 should have waited for this!

  • So I went to expire this but mods/admins have edited price title to the increased price of 204, around when I was expiring the deal

In a scenario like this is it best practice I leave this up or expire it? It still cheaper than elsewhere but not ATL.

Who knows. Constant messing-around by other… “helping” in the background.

Unfortunately, there’s a long-standing reason majority of people don’t post deals, and beg for mercy.

      • Wat, I have no beef with mods.

I just don’t know what to do now in a scenario like this

      • -1

FYI I didn’t neg you Ulysses. I assuming you did for me thinking I did

        • -1

          Some coward did. Not me

    • +3

I don’t think every bargain post needs to be an ATL, it’s still a great price and cheapest around, leave it up I reckon.

    • Generally, if the price has fluctuated by less than a few percent, and no one else has posted another deal with the new price yet, it is ok to update it the price but just add a note to say so.

199 at computer alliance on ebay with ebay plus and free shipping - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175211554275
Support local sellers over amazon unless you have returns in mind.

    • Good to see more psuedo price matching and true, I’m tempted to expire now 🤣

      • That's only for eBay plus though, so probably cheaper at Amazon for those without.

    • +1

CentreCom ComputerAlliance have also matched on main site: https://www.computeralliance.com.au/parts?id=22348

      • +1

Centrecom have matched it but that's not them.

        • Brain fart there honestly

    • Thanks mate brought some from ebay !

  • Aaarrrgghh… saw this at Amazon yesterday for $199, checked Camelx3 and found out that the price was at the lowest.
Thought to check my laptop first, and when arrived home, totally forgot to do it until today, and saw the price now increased to $204. So I immediately bought one, and then saw another posting that ebay has one for $199…

I know it just $5 difference, but I felt being defeated…

    • +1

Cancel on amazon if not shipped.

  • Just curious why people still buy these when NVMe drives are around the same price now?

    • +2

Unless you have thousands and thousands of dollars to spare you can have more SATA drives plugged in. In my use case for a NAS, mobos may have 1 - 2 NVME slots which is not enough to use what I would call a proper RAID setup.

4TB is down to $379 at Umart:
    https://www.umart.com.au/product/crucial-mx500-4tb-3d-2-5in-…

Strongly considering buying this to stack with Amex offer but am wondering if it's better to wait for a price drop on the Samsung 4TB EVO if there are concerns with QLC NAND being used.

  • It's back to $199.

  • $194 now

  • $188 for those in Perth than can pick up from Austin Computers https://www.austin.net.au/products/crucial-2tb-ssd-mx500-ser…

  • It's back at $189

    • This post is buried. Best to rely on newer ones
