Concrete Slab Extension

I have an area of 1200x2400 to be laid as an extension to a existing slab so I can tile the whole area in the future.
My quote…,……..1.2m x 4.2m concrete slab.
- 100mm thick.
- steel reinforcing.
- 12mm starter bars.
- prep, pour & finish.
- labour.

Total - $1350
Obvious question is………. reasonable or not?

Get 2 more quotes from others and you'll have your answer.

    • Yep, getting another two is obvious but it's harder than you think.

  • Damnit. I got ripped off.

    Just paid $1800 for a 3x3 slab :|

      9m^2 is larger than the OP's 5.04m^2….

        They did the Math!

      • That makes me feel a little better, thanks :P
I contacted 6 companies, only 2 got back to me (the other one was $2k and was a "dude from Facebook marketplace")

  • Depends

Is this just an increase in area to a slab that hasn't been poured yet, or a new slab that is being tied into an existing already poured slab?

  • New slab being tied into an existing one

    • +2

Good value, so long as they tie it in properly

    Slab for a slab?

  • Sounds cheap

Hey OP FYI you are specifying two different values here…

      • +5

The decimal point isn't the issue.

so does the order of numbers, hey.

Oh just saw the mistake, the quote is the proper value, well I shouldn't have been a smart arse hey.

        username checks out

  • Just did some quick calcs.

This is fairly spot on based on material cost and labour time.

    Has he allowed for membrane.

How is joining the slabs? Dowel joints and chemset?

Would be confirming the concrete mix and steel size.

I'm assuming this is an outdoor paving slab with no load bearing structures to be built on it. is that a correct assumption?

    • It's not load bearing, im extending the existing slab so I can lay tiles at a later date.
What would you suggest for concrete mix and steel size?……like I have no idea….
      And what membrane?

Oh no…..this is going to end horribly….

N20 concrete and SL62 mesh reinforcement are fine just for a paving slab, which is just the basic. Just good to get in habit of making sure these things are detailed to avoid any disputes.

Membrane (also known as vapour barrier) is the black plastic under slab to prevent moisture from the ground. Now as it is a paving slab, it isn't strictly required, but as you intend to tile it - creating an impenetrable surface for the concrete to dry out once wet - I'd recommend putting it in.

Also ensure he is using reinforcement chairs on the mesh.

    • Thanks, really appreciate it

    • While builders plastic (black) 0.2 millimetres is used as a vapour or moisture barrier, it's not a membrane.

Membranes are also vapour or moisture barrier but in the form of liquid that you paint on a surface, eg. waterproofing the floor in a bathroom but not used under a slab.

builders plastics is the way to go. It's less than $1/sqm in a large roll.

      • It is a membrane, it is not a waterproof membrane.

  • Hi pages currently estimate concreting at $200 - $300 per m2
Based on that, your quote is pretty good considering there is probably a PIA tax applied because it is a small job

    • ahh high pages the app where every single tradie on it never responds.

yet high pages promote like its awesome

      • or you get only the tradies without a licence and/or insurance that reply!

    • 100% is additional small charge. The concrete is well below a batch plants minimum quantity so would either be using bags of concrete on site or paying a surcharge to the concrete companies.

Or you can order a mini-mixer

        • Or this. But again isn't going to be normal m3 rates.

  • Thanks to everyone for the advice and love. I'm going ahead with the quote and confirmed the concrete mix etc……..This is the 1st stage in renovating my deck and it's surrounding. Next stage is power tools and bourbon.
