HP Envy X360 13.3" Laptop with AMD R5 5600U CPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD $993 + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ Harvey Norman

540

Great deal $700 off the envy. This product is being sold for even higher second hand so you know its a good deal.

It's a bummer that there is no upgradable RAM but it's still a light, efficient machine.

What are they thinking putting 8GB RAM non upgradable in it why not 16gb crazy.

    • +13

That's why you're getting this deal

    • +4

work uses 8GB surface pro, can't even run BASIC excel spreadsheet without freezing sometimes.

      • +2

I think that got more to do with the age of your laptop, cpu and surface pros just having inefficient cooling systems. RAM is not such big of a factor when it comes to EXCEL

        • +5

It makes a difference when you have complex worksheets seen it first hand. Basic excel yeah no issues when you have 1000's of lines with formulas and pages good luck with only 8gb ram. Agree with above

          • -3

@Jmore1231: thats compute not RAM -_-

            • +2

              @Freestyle: <cough> memory/file swapping </cough>

          • +1

@Jmore1231: How the (profanity) did we use work computers in the 80s (0.5MB) and 90s (32MB) with Excel if 8096MB is not enough? Text uses up very little space, the world's longest book is 3mb in size with 3747 pages and 9,609,000 characters.

Unless they have massive and extremely taxing spreadsheets that they decided to use on a 13" screen, which makes no bloody sense, I doubt the problem is 8GB of RAM and Excel. If more RAM helps, it is probably because something else might be chewing up the RAM leaving very little for Excel spreadsheets and the more RAM just compensates for that.

More likely the Excel spreadsheet is poorly crafted, formulas having to search too many unnecessary fields / records, and should be broken up.

@FabMan: Pre Win XP there was no true multithreading, you did not have gazillion services running in the background, you did not have special UI effects when you move your app windows, UI/app framework was much lighter (and you did not have half a dozen of them), and maybe most important you did not have Chrome with 50 OzBargain tabs open.

        • +2

Don’t underestimate the use if ram any “office” applications in a work environment, these applications uses a lot of ram when it’s gets complicated, and you don’t just have excel opened.

      • +1

        Unlikely that's a ram issue

        • I completely agree with that.

  • +5

Its insanely thin and light but 16gb would have been a banger deal.

  • +6

Better to wait for another sale of this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/745411 and get a dedicated graphics card too + 16GB RAM

    • Yeah nah

      • +2

        nah yeah

didn't realise this one is touch, still 8GB RAM is kinda crappy.

    • Acer is never better.

    • There is no guarantee it will sell again and when it does it will instantly go out of stock.

I back ordered a similar laptop they said it won't be coming to stock for a while, their demand is way higher than production.
Not to mention this is touch and has a much better looking glass display. This is an envy, it will hold its value way better than other laptops so its got great resale. The specs on the other one are definately attractive.

Something for the HN fanboys to brag that if you don't buy it you were a piss poor planner?

  • How big is the battery?

    • Its not been specified but usually envy's last 5-7 hours on moderate use. And considering it has a 65w charger it probably has a large capacity

    • Had the previous version of this laptop with a Ryzen 4000 series. Could get about 9hrs of productivity, Office, with a similar size battery.

  • I'd jump on it if the RAM was upgrade-able. I've got my gaming laptop, I've been looking for a secondary without the bells and whistles (was originally considering the standard Envy series at one point).

    • I'd jump too if the power were USB-C and not a separate, proprietary power cable.

      • The in box charger is not usb C but you can use it anyway.

    These specs for $1000? No.

    • yeah i dont see it either

    • +3

Would you have a link for a better spec'd laptop in that price range. 13.3 inch or smaller? Am in the market for a laptop with 13.3 or smaller form factor with a $1k budget

      • +1

Would you stretch the budget for an M1 MacBook Air? Could get 10% off apple gift cards from sellers here on OzB classifieds and buy from the Apple on Campus (AOC)/Education Union versions of the Apple site

      • I bought a laptop last year so I'm not in the market at the moment.

      • I am in the same boat. Looking for a 13.3 inch laptop with 16GB Ram for about $1000 or so. Any advice would be great.

  • +1

I have 2 HP laptops, newish models, different models.
Both have issue going to sleep. The damn things do not seem to want to go to sleep. Anyone has any ideas or share the same experience?

    • +1

It's the modern standby. Change the sleep mode if you can. Otherwise, try to unplug it before putting to sleep.

    • Same problem for me. Will try happychappy1's suggestion to unplug power before pressing standby.

  • +1

I envy the one that throws money on this.

    • +1

Im more than happy to throw your money on this. 🙃

  • Perhaps a noob question, but is soldered ram absolutely not upgradeable? Is the risk of damage too great to try and swap it over?

    • +1

Well a slotted ram is so much easier. You wont need a soldering iron to replace the ram sticks.

    • +2

You would need a pretty sophisticated setup to replace soldered RAM. Need many years experience doing microsoldering too, it's technically possible to do it but would probably cost you half the price of the machine if you found anyone willing to do it.

      • That answers my question perfectly. Thank you

  • +1

my 2018 macbook pro is 8gb and is fine

  • +2

I got the Hp aero 13 with same specs for $698 last year. No touch screen though.

Runs windows 11 perfectly even with 8GB. Mid level gaming works fine.

    • -1

Yea but envy holds its value, its like toyota even after leaving the showroom the car stays at the same pricr

  • -5

Get a life, get a real laptop?

    • What laptop

    • +4

Is it me or have more miserable people turned up here in the past couple of years?

      • +2

Not just you. I noticed it also.

  • Bought this model for my son for school, this time last year, paid 950.

If you're thinking of it for that sort of use, get a well padded case, with hard corners. First sleeve I bought did nothing to prevent a corner impact and a broken screen, which was more than the purchase price to repair. Thank god I'd added it to my home insurance.

Replacement is back at HP, after it stopped turning on reliably… not great.

    • How is the performance on this thing? Does it heat a lot?

  • +1
    • Both the same link. Deal is $1,099 for the Envy x360 laptop bundled with Inspire 7920e All-in-One Printer ($143 at HN), so saving of $37 if you need the printer
