What Subscriptions Are You Signed up to? Which Ones Do You Think Are Worth It?

Just curious what kind of subscriptions people are signed up to.

I myself am subscribed to a couple of streaming services and Audible, but am considering signing up for a Masterclass subscription and ditching one of the other ones.

I would create a poll but since you can't select multiple options here's a list of potential subscriptions people might be signed up to:

  • Streaming (e.g. Netflix, Stan, Paramount+, Disney+)
  • Audiobook (e.g. Audible)
  • Gift Box (e.g. Sakuraco, Lootcrate)
  • Fitness (e.g. Gym, Centr, Peloton)
  • Coffee (e.g. Coffee on Cue, Allways Coffee)
  • Toilet paper (e.g. Spacewhite, Ecocheeks)
  • Underwear (e.g. Knobby)
  • Vehicle (e.g. HelloCars, CarBar)
  • Magazine (e.g. Money Magazine, Men's Health)
  • Wine (e.g. Wine Selectors, Naked Wines)
  • Food (e.g. Hello Fresh, Lite N' Easy)
  • Porn (e.g OzBargain Pornhub Shared Family (no incest) Subscription)

Personally I reckon Amazon Prime is worth it, Audible is sort of worth it and Disney+ could be ceased.

What subscriptions are you signed up to? Which ones do you think are worth the money? Any interesting ones that you look forward to getting each month?

If i have to pay i do not want it

    • +8

Paid hookers are much nicer than free ones

      • +5

Generally if it's free, then you're on all fours for Bazza or Dazza :/

  • +5

    Too many…
    Prime
    Disney
    Netflix
    Paramount
    Appletv+
    Yippee
    Hbomax
    Apple Music
    Spotify Premium
    EBay

Not currently, but on and off
    Viki
    Audible
    Hello fresh

And I barely even watch tv. Maybe 3 hours a week.
Paramount, Disney and Netflix get the most use in my house for streaming and can probably be justified. Prime is worth it as I order a lot of stuff from Amazon.

    • +1

That's easily $100+ in streaming subscriptions a month lol, wow. Is HBO Max any good?

      • +2

There is a lot of crossover with other streaming platforms. I know a lot of people like the HBoMax exclusives, but I haven’t really been digging any. Tried Chernobyl but didn’t get far. I’ve watched a few movies before they hit streaming in oz. Most recently the Elvis movie. Tbh probs was a waste of money for me.

        • +3

You should definitely check out The Last of Us, probably the best HBO show at the moment.

    • +20

Why on earth would you even pay for all that? In addition, you then don't actually watch it.

      • +8

Kids, wife. I could get away with less, but some are yearly subs which I thought I would use but don’t. But yeah I need to get rid of some. It’s a waste

        • +2

I don't know if this makes you a true ozbargainer or a horrible one. :)

          • +6

@cookie2: Lol yeah, you gotta spend money to save money etc etc. Got a good deal on a Rolex I don’t even wear. Saved $500! How much did you save on your Casio? Boom! jks

            I am a bad ozbargainer

      • +4

I have a bunch of streaming services and I feel as though I spend most of my time scrolling through to each of them to find something that I can at least tolerate. If I find something that I enjoy, it invariably ends up getting axed. It definitely doesn't feel like value for money anymore.

The only subscription that I have that feels somewhat worth it is XBL.

        • I have the same thoughts on this.
Currently I have Netflix, Stan and Spotify and I barely use any of them, my partner does though.

I can't stand most of the stuff on those sites but I have actually brought a new TV (S95B) to watch some movies i'm interested in and play games on.
I actually think i'm going to invest in a NAS to put Plex on it, find the stuff that I want ad download it to then stream to my TV.

Sure it's expensive but It's a high one-off cost as opposed to paying for streaming services mostly full of absolute shite.

    • +1

Other comments jogged my memory on other subs:
      Eero Secure+
      Microsoft Office Family
      Adobe CC
      Google One
      Google Business

      • Do you derive value from every one of these services? Could you happily do away with any? Are you affluent enough that convenience alone makes it worthwhile? Just curious.

        • All of these 5 are used daily in my household. Not all by my personally. The entertainment ones will be culled once yearly subs complete. They kind of accumulate and I usually buy a yearly sub to “save” money. As far as convenience goes it’s a lot less money than some people make out. Like $100pm. Some people spend that on a gym membership they never use

          • @djsweet: Because of how the streaming services release titles, I have heard that some people will go on say Netflix for 2 months, then switch to another streaming service for 2 months, and continually rotate to only one service that they need at any time. Although fees may be higher paying monthly, you save a lot not having multiple services simultaneously.

      • +1

The + component of the membership hides it for security purposes. You can't be too careful these days.

        • Who needs streaming services when I can browse OzBargain comments.

  • +8

Spotify Premium definitely, only pay ~$37 per year after joining an OzB family plan. Use it for multiple hours daily, so good value imo

    • +2

Wow, that's cheap! I used to have Spotify several years ago, it is pretty handy being able to play whatever song you want when you want it lol.

    • How do you join the family plan when Spotify want you to be in the same location to add users?

      • I didn't have any issues joining, the OzBer's family I joined is based in Sydney as well

        • I don't really know how it works for Spotify. Someone offered me a spot in their family plan and said I needed to be at their house to do it, but I have Apple Music family plan already so I couldn't be bothered.

          • @AustriaBargain: I had this, tried to share with family in canada and spotify right away said if they aren't in same house hold you or they could be banned? Is it real?

    • curious to know how spotify(or any other music streaming) is better than youtube music with premium?

      • Good question, though I'm not sure as I don't use YouTube Music or have YT Premium (YT Revanced). There's quite a lot of articles out there comparing the two

    • I "bought" spotify premium from redditbay for $3, 4 years ago and still going. Its pretty much piggybacking a family account. You can get kicked out after 1 month or so. Rinse and repeat for me.

  • +2

Genuinely keen to see if anyone here actually pays for kogan membership? Or have we all been doing cheeky trials the whole time?

    • +21

      we are buying from kogan?

      • +1

If he didn’t have the steam deck it would be a no

    • +3

Didn't know they had anything worth buying. Bought a microwave there. Photos showed it didn't have a grill element on the roof but when it arrived it did. I hate it. It makes cleaning a pain in the rear. Brackets and things that cut your fingers open, hard to reach grease, etc. The start button went all wrinkly and separated from being pressed after just a few weeks. The button panel is black so you have to turn the kitchen light on every time just to see the buttons. (Plenty of manufacturers doing this dumb move though.) One month out of warranty the door button mech broke. Now I have to open the door by sliding a steel ruler behind it to release the locking latches.

Bought a foldable computer stand to lifts a laptop off the desk to head height. The plastic dress bits that slot into the ends of the extruded aluminium cracked a few months in.

Kogan - just another landfill importer like Aldi.

Xbox Game Pass, PSN, Nintendo Online.

  • +4

Have cut them down significantly, atm only a couple:
Prime, Netflix & Spotify (although will likely drop this now that my credit card rebate is finished on this)

Got rid of Disney as they just kept raising the price and the content has not improved, likely just pick up a month every 6mths or so to catch up on everything. Otherwise

  • +7

YouTube Premium (Argentina) - mainly for YouTube Music, family plan and sharing it with friends
Netflix Premium (Turkey) - thinking about cancelling it after latest price increase, not using it that much and only have Premium for 4k content, sharing it with friends
Amazon Prime - mainly for free delivery, and a bit of Prime Video

    Disney (friend pays for it)

  • +4

I split and share with 4 others for most things, and use cheaper regions where possible but…

    Hulu
    Stan
    Netflix (Turkey)
    YouTube Premium (India)
    Adobe CC (Turkey)
    Peloton
    Foxtel (Ozbargain share)
    Amazon Prime
    Ancestry
    iCloud+ (Turkey)
    Spotify (Brazil)
    HBO Max (Argentina)
    Disney+ (Turkey)
    Ring Protect
    YNAB
    Xbox GPU
    Nintendo Online (Ozbargain share)

    • +5

      Ring Protect

I just did a quick Google of this and it sounds a bit like Fitbit's subscription service i.e. you need to subscribe to get features like sleep cycles and sleeping heart rate.. to me that sort of thing should just be included with the damn product. I think Oura ring has something similar, which is a bit of a joke when you're spending so much on a device.

Interesting that Ancestry have a subscription service, didn't know they had something like that.

      • Reminds me, I also have an Amazon eero security+ subscription to “unlock” eero features. At least it includes a 1Password family sub, and a vpn, so it’s not the worst.

    • Thanks for your post mate. Just moved my Adobe account to Turkey.

      • Can you do this in the middle of the subscription? I only just signed up for a new sub to Adobe CC, would love to drop the price further if I could

        • +1

Unfortunately, I don’t think you can. I only did that cause I was near the end of my annual subscription cycle.

  • +2

    Spotify, YouTube, Netflix.

    • you get music with youtube premium but it's not as good as spotify

      • I use YouTube music for the videos. Otherwise Spotify.

  • +8

    Plex…

    That is all.

    Edit;
Oh, and Xbox Game Pass… now, “that is all…”

  • +6

I pay $20 a month for my woolworths phone plan. Today it paid for itself with the 10% off a grocery shop, so not sure if it counts.

    • +1

      $15 Aldimobile

      • Do Aldi give a discount on shopping as well with a mobile plan?

        • +1

Like for like groceries are about 18-20% cheaper

      • +1

This is a great car, highly recommend. Vvvv cheap!

    • Today it paid for itself with the 10% off a grocery shop

You'd need to spend $200 at once, per month at Woolworths for that to happen. If you're doing that you're likely not shopping anywhere else.

Woolworths has you by the balls. No more shopping around for better deals on overpriced dishwasher tablets or paper towel.

When Woolworths Mobile re-branded to "Every Day Mobile", they increased the price of their pre-paid mobile plans. By how much? Around 35%. So the $75 pre-paid long expiry plan became the $100 pre-paid long expiry plan. That 10% discount you get is not looking as good as you're advertising.

  • +8

Just wish there was a single studio-neutral service with an extensive all-you-can-eat movie list - kind of like what netflix was in its early days of operation.

    • I agree. The crappy thing about streaming services too is that they also don't always have older movies. Netflix seems to have a decent catalogue though, but the fact things rotate in and out constantly is a bit annoying.

    • +3

Agreed. I often get into conversations about this. In the early days, Netflix was a one-stop-shop, movie and tv replacement service with a good amount of content. Killed foxtel because you could get the same stuff (bar sport) for 1/10 of the price. Now we’re back at foxtel era when content is fragmented across “channels” aka “streaming services” and you have to pay more and more to unlock additional content. It’s basically back to foxtel prices of old.

Side note, Prime is basically formalising the Foxtel channel pack model by allowing you to add content in packs such as Paramount+, AMC, Shudder, etc. Stan is also doing it to a lesser degree with Stan Sports.

Streaming is better than Foxtel imho, but it’s turned out not to be cheaper.

      • +1

Great analysis. Streaming is becoming increasingly stratified and costly. Don't like where it is going

      • on that channel pack model, just got a 'BritBox' offer from PRIME for $1 for the Month of Feb, not bad if you want to have a look around it or binge DR.WHO I guess. Then unsub…

    • But if that was the case you’d basically be paying the equivalent of a full Foxtel subscription by now. The splitting of content is the only thing keeping prices in check at this point. Also worth noting that even in the early days there was a LOT of content you couldn't get on Netflix.

    • +1

Foxtel before all the content and sport got cannibalised. People can complain it was expensive but to mimic what it used to have, and if the content you want is across multiple providers, you’re looking at paying more now than then.

      • +1

In hindsight it seems obvious this was going to happen. No one wanted to believe it though

    • There's real debrid paired to Stremio app for Android.
All the streaming services rolled into one.

      • Does it work on TV? What is the interface like?

        • yeah, you can download Stremio from the Android app store on your smart tv. Or connect an android box like an nvidia shield to any tv.

Stremio interface is great, very fast: https://www.stremio.com/

Follow this guide to pair it with real debrid: https://leafguides.xyz/posts/stremio/

btw, as far as my limited understanding goes, you don't need a vpn for real debrid.

    Amazon Prime

Ebay Plus will be cancelled at the end of the month if I find I'm still not using it.
Kayo and Disney+ shared with a family member.
Netflix only recently, so I could watch The Sandman.

Up until recently I had a monthly gin subscription, cancelled that after the last interest rate rise.

    • monthly gin subscription

      That's a bit different!

Seems most replies are mainly related to streaming services.

  • +1

AFR (work pays) good but sometimes quite tabloid like
Peloton (use it pretty much every day now)
Amazon Prime (low cost and I use it for shopping and streaming)
Netflix (always found something good to watch so have not cancelled)
Calm (I signed up premium lifetime using the hack posted about a year ago - use the daily meditations and more rarely the sleep stories)

    • I assume you own the peloton bike as well? Would love to hear more about your thoughts on and how useful you find it as I’ve been thinking about getting one for a while now!

      • Hi there! No I don’t have the peloton bike at the moment - started as an app user only with the strength classes and recently got the Peloton Guide. I use another spin bike for cycling classes (LSG SPG-220) that I saw another Ozbargainer recommend a while ago. I am deeply embedded in the Peloton “community” and think that the bike is worth it and makes for an incredibly immersive experience if you’re going to get into cycling. For me cycling is not my main activity but even so it’s fast becoming one of my favourite modalities on Peloton so I might succumb and upgrade to the Bike or Bike+ one day.

Either way I wholly recommend checking out the app first if you haven’t already - I think you can sign up for a 60 day trial and then decide from there. I have been a member for close to two years and love it. If you’re going to be focusing on cycling as your main type of exercise with Peloton and have the budget for it - I say just go for it! Those I know with the bike really love it and their enthusiasm and level of fitness are what’s making me consider upgrading at some point.
