S23 series coming within 2 weeks

    • +1

Definitely HODL. not long to wait till s23 line up.

    • +7

Yep I don't usually make comments about impending updated models because these deals will often make the current (soon to be former) gen $500+ cheaper, but in this case the S22 series was almost exactly the same as the S21 series so it might make the S23 a decent improvement over it…hopefully! After the Pixel 7 series launched, Samsung has some work to do!

    • +2

S22 performance is terrible, bought one and have big regrets. Highly recommend waiting for s23 to see how they go.
      Edit: grammar.

For those wondering, GPU throttle is 53% on the s22+ model

  • Worst time ever to buy this phone with a new model imminent.

      • +26

No one 'needs' a S22 Plus.

        • +3

Hippo might do to keep in touch with their animal friends in animal land.

    • +1

Some people might need a phone today AND only willing to spend $1099. Don't think S23 range would be affordable at that price. So this would be an ok deal.

      • +3

        Let it go.

      • +4

Would recommend literally half a dozen other phones over the s22, most of which will be cheaper.

        • Which? I'm looking now.

          • @Eraezr: I have the s22+ and if I could I would downgrade to the a73, simply because it doesn't throttle anywhere near as bad (but yes it is slower) and the battery lasts well over a day. I have to charge my phone a bit midway through the day to last (I use the battery saver function which limits capacity to 85% though)

The snapdragon 8 G1 chips were made by Samsung and the thermal performance is garbage.

If you are happy to wait and buy a flagship phone from from 2023 there should be much much better thermal (and overall) performance from the sd8 G2.

Edit: it depends what you're looking for. I would also take the pixel 7 (or pro) over the s22+ which should be around the same price as the s22.

Not sure what the video recording is like on the pixel phones but I'm not impressed with the s22. I think that's more of a universal android issue though, apple just had much better/smoother video recording.

Finally, I also just hate Samsung UI and the fact that the Samsung apps can't be uninstalled, so you end up with a bunch so Samsung/google duplicates.

      • +2

The idea is in 2 weeks the s22 series might drop even lower…

        • Exactly. Why does one ever think you are waiting for the new one because it would be this cheap. It never will be. Not going to happen. The idea is the new phone would bring down the cost of the previous model.

          • @xoom: Though often preorders on Samsung phones is the best way to get them, atleast in the initial few months IF you value the bonuses they throw in.

          • @xoom: The Samsung epp store does surprisingly agressive discounts on new release/pre-order devices.

  • The next Gen will be near $2k?

    • +2

      Not the entry levels.

      • Outgoing model was $1650, new one wont be cheaper, i expect it will go up another hundred.

        • -1

Galaxy S22 started at $1249 in Australia.

          Plus $1549
          Ultra $1849

          I also expect another $100.

          • @scuderiarmani: rumours all lines to start at 256gb instead of 128… (128 most likely in emerging markets and maybe base s22?)
much needed in today's world let alone the s galaxy lineup…

another $50-100 is well worth it

    • That's what they said for the S22 Ultra as well, but i paid $1599 for the S22 Ultra 1TB version from Samsung education's pre-order.

      • When you say pre-order, would it be before feburary 2 or is that after feburary 2, in the feb month, not sure how the pre-orders works. I'm looking to possibly get a s23 ultra with some savings.

        *edit, grammar.

        • They announce when pre orders are open and what discount and or goodies you get with it free or heavily discounted.

Like galaxy buds, samsung care, tablets like the s7fe. Just to name a few things.

Watch this place. Someone will post something about pre orders of s23 variants. I'm certain of it.

          • @xoom: Can we get dual sim locally on education store discounts or any other local discounts for that matter.
I need physical dual sim. Unless someone can help me out with an Esim for boost.

            • @Rbnutz: Dont think any s22 variant has dual physical sims. Only one physical one e-sim.

And s23 variants will likely continue this trend.

              • @xoom: My S22 is dual. Gray import from Asia. Local market doesn't seem to support but many others do. Frustrating.

  • +7

Samsung needs competition. Bring back Huawei.

    • +16

and whoever was making the decisions at sony need to be kicked.

      • +7

Sony phones were great. Still keeping the headphone jack and sd card slot . Sadly, not available in Australia

        • -2

Seriously, whats up with people wanting SD card lol
I stopped using them a decade ago, they're slow and create issues.

          • +1

            @nikoris: Versatility.

          • @nikoris: I like to load up on tv shows movies and music on my phone. Haven't any issues when i had one that did.

            • @xoom: get a usb-c to microsd adaptor for those occassions…
u wont be doing that day to day i'd immagine?

              • @spoonmugen: Thats just another thing i need to worry about when it i shouldn't have to.

          • @nikoris: They are slow/issues if you are trying to move & run apps off them. For storing your music, videos, camera photos & camera 4k videos they are great. Keeps your device storage free for all the apps.

What's the point of my phone having 4k video recording feature if the videos gobble up the internal storage so quickly?

            • @Agret: I mean, dont you upload them on cloud as well anyway?
I would never trust my photos, camera photos, BT photos, downloaded photos, videos, 4k videos, downloaded videos, music, offline spotify music, documents, downloaded documents just on a flimsy SD card (see what i did there?)
SD cards are redundant nowadays. It would make more sense for someone who doesnt do cloud or streaming at all.

          • @nikoris: Because I can buy a base model and expand as much space as I want for cheap.

Cloud sync does nothing for me if I'm capped by a rubbish 15gb limit or I gotta pay a monthly subscription

            • @twig: lol 'could means nothing if it aint free'
I'm not running my data not-backed up, i know better than that. $5-10 a month is nothing compared to the ease of mind.

              • @nikoris: You do you

Just reminding you what site you're on.

    • +3

Totally agree. Huawei is brilliant. Consider Oppo too.

Samsung overhyped Apple alternative, but serious value when new SKUs launch

Looking to replace 3 yr old note 10+
      Don't know alternatives with stylus

      • +2

I mean S22 Ultra is basically the continuation of the note series. Definitely worth watching out for deals on those after s23 release.

        • U are better off getting trade in bonus and gift card deals and just getting the s23

          • +1

@sn809: I disagree. Base model and ultra are not even comparable phones with totally different target audiences

      • +2

Mate 20 was the best phone purchase ever. What a phone

      • +2

Rocking a Mate 20 pro !! hard to consider upgrading since it's still a fantastic phone

        • +1

All I want is double storage, 5G, better camera- rest of it is fine.

          • @hamwhisperer: Apparently the mate 20 & mate 20 pro have a NM (nano memory) card slot for memory expansion. I've never heard of this form factor before, guess it's a cutdown microsd. Have a look and you can probably expand it.

            • @Agret: It's proprietary yeah, but the camera is starting to get on a bit. The iPhone 14, S22 Ultra, Pixel 7 Pro all have exceptional cameras.

And I have no interest in all 3 of those phones :(

      • Samsung is not overhyped; they make the best android phones. Nothing comes close to Samsung software and the customization they offer. They have their flaws, but who doesnt

        • +3

I used Samsung from the S3 to the Note 5, almost every single handset.

I assure you, the Mate 20 easily matches Samsung handsets, the features outright shocked me. Fast too, still, 4 years later.

          • +1

@hamwhisperer: I loved my huawei mate 9, but they killed them without google services.
You can sideload them, i know, but im not buying an expensive flagship and rely on google apps sideloading

            • @nikoris: Agreed, they also went down the curved route too sadly. At least they kept IR ports for a while, I still use mine.

    • So much this :( still have mine and it's absolutely amazing for the age.

      Features out of control

    • But we have pixhahahahahahahaha

      • Really? Fanboys between Android Brands?

        • You know, not everyone with an opinion is a fanboy. Let that sink in.

  • This or a S21 Ultra?

    • Do you want a curved screen?
      A chunk taller too

    • +2

I had s21 ultra and sold for s22 ultra as I really didn't like the form.

The camera bump was just epic.

If you can stretch yourself for wait for an s22 ultra deal I would do that… The curved OLED is niiiiice and the s22u cameras are much prettier.

    • Only reason I was actually considering the S21 Ultra is that it's relatively 'cheap' in comparison and I can get the international version with the better chip

Cameras are really not important to me, I hardly ever take pictures with my phone (I know… f@$% me, right? haha) but I do appreciate I phone with no lag and especially one that won't freeze and etc when using multiple apps and Android Auto.

I will definitely wait for the S23 release to reevaluate my options since it's so close now

  • +1

I bought a refurb S22+ less than a month ago. Didnt want another curved screen.

Its been great, not flawless but exactly what i wanted from an upgrade from Note10+.

Lots of complains online about battery, my experience has been great so far.

    • +1

      Curved screens DIE

      • +3

Yeah that curved screen shenanigans need to go. Its really annoying on my s22 ultra. Im using the pen and the curved display is just frustrating.

        • +1

Sounds like it's still there on S23.

  • +5

Wait the extra few weeks. Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is fabbed by Samsung hence it runs hot with shit efficiency, and as a result has terrible battery life.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is built by TSMC (just like the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1) and will be so much better.

    Don't buy the S22 series.

    • +1

The chip used in the S23 is made by Samsung.

      • +1

I though they were going to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2?

        • An overclocked version apparently. Specially for samsung.

        • It's a "galaxy" version of that chip.

          • @Wizard: What process is it fabbed on?

          • @Wizard: So not made by Samsung but Qualcomm?

            • @interfreak: Do a google search. 'S23 chip" in news. Not hard to read.

              • @Wizard: Yup says it's a customised chip made by Qualcomm.

                • +2

@interfreak: All snapdragons are designed by Qualcomm because snapdragon is their brand for their Arm chips.

Qualcomm themselves do not own a silicon foundry, rather they contract out to someone who does. Usually this has always been TSMC, but recently for the SD 888 and SD 8 Gen 1, it was Samsung.

Samsung's process is shit, while TSMC's process is really good.

The "overclocked" version are basically better binned ones that can be pushed a little harder, they're not fabbed by Samsung. Having the same chip brand being fabbed by two different foundries with different processes would be an engineering and PR nightmare.

    • We got Exynos for S22. Its been fine for me but i dont do any gaming, have a PC for that.

      • My s22 ultra is sd 8 gen 1

        • Right, i got some bad info…
          Thanks for letting me know.

      • +1

        S22 in AU is Qualcomm.

        • Right, i got some bad info…
          Thanks for letting me know

      • Seems im wrong, dont remember where i got this from but have checked and I also have the SD.

  • +5

Anyone here waits for a deal like 450$ S21+ in the late 2021 LOL

    • me!!! lol.

    • The double stacking coupon resulting in $550 for the s21 ultra will forever be my best bargain.

  • +2

$1,049.99 in Costco if anyone's interested.

  • +2

Isn't sydneymobiles on eBay a better deal than this? $950 with eBay plus, though black is out of stock if that's the desired one I guess.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/393992174323

    • Anyone give a.. about the colour. I'd have a mango one if the price is righr

      • +3

Personally I think mango would be cool…

  • +1

$699 with the trade in bonus, loyalty and newsletter codes direct from Samsung.

    • what did you trade and how much did they give you for it? just wondering what do do…

    • What trade in phones?

    • Breakdown please?

  • What is difference between my woolies special moto for $70 and this when making calls ?

    • I've got an old S9 for $20. Still trying to get the newsletter code before I put an order through. This is for my partner, upgrading from an A12 ha.

    • +1

What ludicrous idea this making calls with a mobile phone? Thats never gonna catch on. Passing fad at best.
