  • The downside of these compared to the older Round temp/humidity sensors are that these little square ones use a 2032 battery. Battery life is terrible in comparison, though they are more compact.

    • I have both models. I found out the round model aaa battery will last for 1 year wirh energizer. Havent seen to replace 2032 yet. Whats is your batt life for 2032?

      • Bought it on Sept 2021, just need to replace it a few days ago but I didn't set it up immediately after I received them, so I think more than 1 year.

It could be dodgy batteries, and I didn't time it, but I have maybe 6 of these squares around the house. I feel as though 3 to 6 months and I have to replace. Again, it could be because of the ikea 2032 batteries. Maybe they don't last long. Whereas the round one, I don't remember the last time I changed batteries and yet they've still got 2 bars left. Not very scientific I know…haha

        • Had issues with the ikea and cr2032 batteries as well, specifically in a car fob. Replaced both car fob remotes batteries and one went flat within 3-6 months, other is still going.

          • @dazza826: I've seen some testing on the web that indicate the Ikea CR2032 batteries have less capacity than "name brand" equivalents.

        • Same experience and I use brand name batteries. The Bluetooth connection to the gateway and phone drains them quick especially when you have alerts or automation set up

I tested a pack of ikea 2032's with a multimeter and only 2 out of 10 had close to the correct Voltage. I think they were at like 2.7 and 2.8V while most were below 2V, and a couple were even below 1V…. Never again.

  • Does anyone connect these too a central gateway?

    • +1

It's intermittent. Took me a while to connect to the older V1 gateway, and since this uses bluetooth, it doesn't stay connected; just updates when the app is accessed.

    • +1

I only use the Xiaomi Home app

I paired 3 of them to an ESP32 with bluetooth that's connected to Home Assistant. One of the three always dropped out no matter where I put it, or no amount of fiddling with the settings (increase Tx power etc). They're all within 0.2 degrees temperature and about 5% humidity.

Even without the bluetooth they are alright as little visual indicators, I have them stuck up next to the light switches by doorways, but I probably wouldn't buy them in future. Zigbee or nothing.

      • I have some ecowitt stuff. The ecowitt wifi bridge to home assistant is rock solid.

    • +1

Works fine for me directly connected to a RPi 4 with home assistant OS.

  • Can you use these without connecting them to other devices?

Just using them as temperature/humidity sensors?

    • +1

Yes they work just fine without any pairing/app

    • Yes we keep one in our toddlers bedroom, been good to avoid her getting super sweaty when she sleeps to check just before she naps

    • Ya I have a couple around the house just to peep temperatures occasionally

Don't really need it connect to HA etc

  • +1

have one in each room. great little devices.

I don't bother connecting them to anything

  • +1

Do these get picked up in home assistant via an esp Bluetooth gateway?

  • +4

Seriously, don't get these guys, I got a 4 pack, and have changed the batteries 3 times already in a year. This time opting for Energizer batteries but still cost $8 for 4. It's an ongoing cost. Rather get the $17 one from Amazon, 2 years still haven't needed to change the battery, but no Bluetooth.

Also, one of them doesn't connect to Bluetooth anymore.

    • Pretty anecdotal, as I've got 8x total and all lasted over a year. How did you use them? I've heard direct bluetooth connections (without the bluetooth firmware) drain battery like a mofo

      • How did you use them?

Wondering the same, how did he connected it? May be bluetooth always connected?

I am using Mi Home App, bluetooth connected only when I open the sensor from the app to get the data.

      • I would use Bluetooth maybe twice a week to check the temps at night. Sometimes, I wouldn't check for a month. Not sure what the Bluetooth firmware is, I connect via Mi Home App and I turn on my phone's Bluetooth. I never leave it on.

        • I would use Bluetooth maybe twice a week to check the temps at night.

How did you connect it by bluetooth with the Mi App itself or with the phone bluetooth settings?

Mine last more than 1 year, I bought it on 2021 just need to change it a few days ago.

Add these to you pile of unnecessary OB purchases:)

  • OOS

  • These seem to have bluetooth device to device connectivity. As in, I can place the devices in a line and they'll report back to a raspberry pi way further than bluetooth range.

My bluetooth curtain motors do not have that sort of connectivity.

  • OOS :(

Have a bunch of these, don't have any battery issues but I used the flasher tool and link them into a couple of esp32ble
    https://pvvx.github.io/ATC_MiThermometer/TelinkMiFlasher.htm…

    • What's this ESP32 this thread keeps mentioning? quick google it looks like a RPi alternative?

      • ESP32 = https://www.espressif.com/en/products/socs/esp32
Another small chip that is good for hobby projects. Plenty of different size and form factors

      • The ESP32 is a range of tiny cheap development board (like Raspberry Pi) that has a surprisingly strong set of features for a postage stamp sized mini computer. WiFi, Bluetooth, SD card support, USB support, webserver support, camera support. The list goes on. Since it has bluetooth, you can pair BLE devices like this to the ESP32 device and use it to send updates, data etc depending on what code you put on it. Home Assistant has an excellent integration with ESP boards so you can pair the environment senors to the ESP32 board, then the ESP board sends that data to Home Assistant over WiFI.

I have an ESP32 soil sensor that monitors when to water my indoor plants, temperature sensors, security cameras (they can even do onboard image detection! - https://randomnerdtutorials.com/esp32-cam-video-streaming-fa…)

      • My esp32s are ElectroDragon LED controllers that I use to run light strips and then they also act as BT proxies 😁

  • Can anyone advise if this could be used for an indoor plant? Do they have probes? I'm honestly not sure what they're for :D

    • +1

Monitor humidity and temp in rooms…..then some can be programmed to turn on the AC to heat/cool using certain apps and home assistant.

  • Got the Humidifier thanks! Too bad I bought the Samsung airfryer last month otherwise I would get the airfryer too!

  • I don't like to do a post without evidence, but I'm sure I bought 4 of these Temp/Humidity sensors from an OZB deal for around this price? (Stuffed if I can find the invoice though ….)

    • It was 3 for $20.16 ($19.66 w/ eBay Plus) in this deal. I just removed the "3x" to make room for (OOS) in the title as you can see in the reivisons

There was this 4 pack last year
