I went to one of these a few years ago, was fantastic!!

Just be warned - if you want a good spot and to find free parking walkable, get there early! Sounds annoying, but really if it's a nice evening, you can bring snacks and just chill on the grass having a picnic before the concert starts.

    • +2

I typically walk in a few minutes before it starts and there are still seats available right at the front. But yeah, the picnic spots are hotly contested!

      • +1

Oh well, yeah, I should have put a caveat regarding if you're in a group of people that needs more space kinda thing.

      • +2

It really varies on the program. Tchaikovsky is always popular and the venue will fill up. But can you get a good spot without lining up? Yes.
John Williams was so packed last year they closed the gates early and people were sitting outside listening. Inside was completely full. Within the first hour of gates opening all good spots were gone.

      • Woah that's crazy! Any tips? I'm thinking if you're after a seat, fly solo.

    • could you please suggest some free parking spots?

      • +1

I usually just find something the other side of St Kilda Road in the residential streets and walk across. No point even trying to find a spot in those streets that run adjacent to SMMB

        • thanks. let's hope it's not going to rain.

What, no show in melbourne from the melbourne orchestra? Does sydney not have its own band?

    • +1

      Huh?

      • -4

Theres free shows in sydney, I'm just wondering why there arent free shows listed in melbourne. As a side note I live in Darwin.

        • +6

These free shows are in Melbourne. The venue is called the Sidney Myer music bowl. No relation to the city of Sydney. Hope you can make it down!

          • @Kikiriki: Oh thank you for that, I had no idea about venue names, thought the city instead. I mainly wanted to know since my sister lives in melbourne and this would be good for her.

All you people negging me need to understand people who dont live in melbourne have no idea whats there.

        • +7

Sidney Myer was the founder of the store Myer and used to host free MSO concerts in the 20s. A charitable trust was established after he died which funded the construction of this fantastic venue, so this event carries on his tradition.

Hoping this is a joke ?

      • I dont know melbourne so I cant know this place is an area in melbourne. You can call me thick but I dont live there. So learning is probably a good thing, hence why I start asking questions.

    • +2

For anyone else wanting to neg me, understand I'm in darwin and dont know what your places are called. I wanted to know because my sister lives in melbourne and wanted to show her it. Funnily enough she also thought that place was in sydney and shes been there 20 years. Thanks.

Dan/Capp - "please come back to Melbourne…. please".

Edit - joke aside this sounds great and would love to go.

I am so pumped for Carmina Burana Saturday 18 Feb. I hate Carlton Draught, but maybe I will bring some in just for the novelty.
    IT’S A BIG AD… VERY BIG AD

    • Check bag rules, sometimes you can't even bring in water…

      • Just checked, no glass or water. Will be decanting our wine into water bottles.

Make sure you get there early for the 6pm curtain raiser with the Melbourne Youth Orchestra.

  • Each concert has a different program.
The post makes it look like its Tchaikovsky each day, but its not.

      Fixed. Hopefully clearer now.
