Would ALDI $5 PAYG Be Best for My Grandad?

Currently he is with telstra paying $60/year so $5/mo (Recharging/prepaid) and as long as he keeps recharging it rolls over so he's accrued about 380mins atm, we're aware if we change him to something else he'll lose it.

Basically just seeing if there's anything cheaper out there for him, he rarely makes calls and it's more for just emergencies when he's out and about

Does the recharge amount on the ALDI roll over as well? So we buy the base thing for $5 then a recharge for say $25 ($30 all up for the first year) if he doesn't use it, and we recharge say $15 a few days before it expires, will he end up with $45 for the next year?

He wants to stay with the telstra network but is there any other options I could look at or consider ?

Also want to have no hastles with it, as in porting in and out every few months, don't want to be doing that.

Thanks for your help.

He’d be better off with OLDI $5 plan

You don't need to even recharge once you get the $5 SIM as it comes with $5 credit and yes it accumulates as long as you recharge before the expiry date

    • Yeah I know, but he just wants like a buffer so it doesn't cut out mid call kind of thing you know. Thanks for that :)

      • Calls are $0.12 per minute so just load up whatever amount you think is necessary for a buffer & turn off data.

        Aldi Mobile post here.

Yes if you recharge before 12 months expires the credit will roll over for another 12 months.

Aldi uses the Telstra network - "We use parts of the Telstra 5G, 4G and 3G network to deliver ALDImobile coverage to more than 98.8% of the Australian population". Coverage is generally better than Vodaphone.
Aldi sends an SMS to the phone when your credit drops below $10, giving you plenty of time to recharge.
Aldi credit expires after 365 days - but if you add another $15 credit before the old credit expires, the old credit rolls over and the full amount is valid for 365 days. So if you don't make any calls, the credit on the phone will increase by $15 each year - which is less than the $60/year plan you've presently got with Telstra.
Sounds like an ideal application for Aldi PAYG account, I recommend the change.

        • Awesome that's what I was hoping, seems we'll change over thanks!

I do the exact same thing for 4 of my old relatives, works just fine

    • Great thanks! :D

  • Got a weblink for telstras,.. paying $60/year so $5/month, good deal if direct with Telstra

It's part of the casual plan for prepaid, he's currently doing the $30/6months :)

be aware you only get 80 min of calls for the 6 months.

Amaysim give you unlimited calls/text for $60 per year.

      • be aware you only get 80 min of calls for the 6 months

        Typical Telstra lolz

Well got an email from Belong stating Belong is moving to Telstra,. I'm guessing Telstra now officially owns Belong outright, so cheapest I know of using Telstras 5G network for $15 per month, well if one needs unlimited calls/sms out and I love the roll over unused data feature

ALDI I use to park a mobile number, so whats that $20 per year umm not sure if there is anything cheaper out there then $20 per year, $3.33 per month?

  • Id suggest you get a plan that has auto recharges,

and has international roaming, etc for when traveling overseas

paying a bit more for ease is worth it, if you miss a recharge you may lose the number which happened on my vodaphone plan which was paid yearly.

The Aldi plan works fine but their website recharge is trcky for some people to manage. We have ended up with multiple recharges because the wrong type of recharge plan was selected. I would stay with the existing plan for familiary and reassurance of having the large buffer of time if he needs it.

    • You can also buy recharge vouchers in store at the checkout.

It was the confusion between mobile plan option and payg option. They new they would do a $15 recharge and thought it was under mobile plans which only gives 1 month usage. You have to look under payg and then it is there. Now I look after it and it is fine.

Thanks for the headsup, I'll be managing it anyway so I'll be sure to pick the right one :)
