These work great for GPS trackers and stuff like IOT that has very low data requirements.

5 dollars literally for a year. Then just swap out the SIM, not even worth recharging them.

    • +1

How much data would a GPS tracker use over a year?

      • -3

none? as it uses gps and not data

        • Why do you need a SIM card for GPS?

          • -1

@bio: Sim card allows you to access the tracker whiles on the move (ex. when someone steals your car). GPS part only gets the location data

            • +2

@Froot Loops: Yeah, that was my point. The OP claimed that you won't need data for GPS, which is technically true, but GPS is useless without tracking features (which require data) if that makes sense.

              • +1

                @bio:

The OP claimed that you won't need data for GPS

I think you mean previous commenter as OP is Original Poster - me - and I never said that.

                • +1

                  @CodeXD: Yes, I meant @desync

    • +3

I am using this sim for the home alarm, and camera.

      • +1

how are you using this for camera? As I am setting up a CCTV system as well.

        • I have no idea, a company set it up for me and they used Hills system, it calls me when an event triggered

          • @T-man: it calls messages me when an event triggered

            FTFY :-)

      • Can you pls PM or share here the company name or contact who configured this ?

        Thanks

    • +9

For IoT you can setup DNS tunnelling and use an expired or inactive sim card.

      • +3

        Any details/tutorials you can provide?

        • +11
        • Setup an iodine server using a docker image was the most straight forward. Then assuming that your iodine server has IP address 1.2.3.4, set up the following records:

Add an A record for iodns.example.com pointing to 1.2.3.4.
Add an NS record for tunnel.example.com pointing to iodns.example.com.

You can test if the server is working properly here.
Then setup on your client device. On android it was easy with andiodine, but otherwise there's this guide.

I had just set one up and it worked with receiving pushover notifications on an expired boost sim.

          • @Mibo: ok ive found this doesn't actually work. i tried with optus, voda and aldimobile (which uses telstra). i feel this whole thread is fake news unless someone can confirm it still works in Dec 2022?

      • +10

This was a fun rabbit hole to go down. The ingenuity of hackers and data security teams never fails to impress.

    • Any recommended GPS trackers?

    • im doing this but i dont know how to avoid blowing out the allowance with background use. any tips?

      • +1

On Android, you can try Data Saver and whitelist whatever apps you need. You can also set a warning and limit for SIM data usage.

        • thank you, i will add those measures. the other problem is tailscale will blow my data anyways. i need to figure out a way to deal with that

  • +19

In before JV….What's the normal price?

    • +21

      And yet never been posted!

        • +15

Even it had been posted before it can be reposted once every 6 months per ozb rules.

Frankly it is a bargain , where else can you get 12 months network access on Telstra for $5. And I'm quite certain not everyone is aware of it

I use one one on a burner phone for when I'm signing up for an online promo or discount and don't wish to give my primary number. I don't need data or calls, I just need the SMS confirmation code.

          • @ash2000: Yes, the plan has limited utility other than receiving local SMSs (which are free). International SMS is 50 cents though.

            • +1

@RefusdClassification: Indeed, but for $5 it pays for itself 10x or 20x with the ability to sign up for extra "introductory offers"…..ie uber eats…..etc etc etc.

        • +1

Then how else would I have known about it

      • +3

        And yet never been posted!

        Certainly has been posted…
Just not for a very long time (7+yrs)😉

Aldi Mobile - Pay as You Go - $5 for 365 Days - with $5 Credit

80% off ALDImobile $5 Starter Kit for $1 Delivered (with $5 365-Day Credit)

Discussed in SIM Deals for years - to park a number, to mainly receive incoming calls (handy in dual SIM phones), etc.

Now there's a "LONG RUNNING DEALS" category, this normal price will be shown under Aldi Mobile - rather than being expired in months. (Until the next Deal is posted.)

It's one of the most basic but long term SIM Deals available. An OzBargain basic.

Discussing SIMs here & SIM hopping for 8 years, I've never used one. There are usually better Deals. Like…

I'm on a FREE Belong SIM (on Telstra) for 6 months, with over 1000GB - through Telstra Plus Deals (with another FREE 6 months after that)😊
So all my phone & data for a year - FREE!

        • +1

I'm on a FREE Belong SIM (on Telstra) for 6 months, with over 1000GB - through Telstra Plus Deals

How do you earn Telstra Plus points, though?

          • +2

@bio: See Telstra Plus Deals - very easy! Comments there tell you how.
But need a Telstra ID (from a Telstra service).

            In latest deal - received 2 x 5K pt + won 15k points. 25k pts in minutes!!

Received 100k pts when booked budget (less than $200) break in Feb!

When on sale, $80 Belong SIMs cost 2k pts including delivery.
12k FREE pts paid for a year of phone (2 phone SIMs + referral) + over 2000GB Data (4 data SIMs).

No pts from a Telstra service - I don't have one. Luckily set up 2 Telstra ID years ago.

            • @INFIDEL: But don’t you need yo have an active telstra service to access these deals?

              • @macr0hard: No, but need a Telstra ID to sign up to Telstra Plus. Haven't had an active telstra service for years! Got Telstra ID then.

      • +2

thanks for posting mate, wish i knew about this. Already bought a $90 coles - 1 year sim for my MIL who now needs to go oversea. Wish I knew about this sooner. Don't worry about the hater :)

    • karma upvote farming on reddit ozbargain haha

      • +3

karma farming on reddit is reposting things others posted XD This deal has never been posted before.

I was looking for the cheapest method to get a new number I can link to my 2nd JB Perks account.

    • +2

been like this for the last 3 years

That's literally what "long running deal" means. It's a deal because there aren't any other operators with a $5/year plan.

      • -7

fair enough, but then you will be posting everything and create noise

        • But where should the OP draw the line? None of these deals makes sense if you ask me.

          • -4

@bio: we will see if this deal even get 100 upvotes first

            • +13

@SS625: I'm not posting for the upvotes, just the awareness that there are cheap sim cards with long expiry available.

I'll rather 5 people who didn't know about this deal learn about it, than 10 people who already knew about it and upvote it as a good deal.

            • +1

@SS625: Upvoted because of your comment. :)

        • +4

Just because you know something, doesn't mean the next person will.

I only found out about this recently, these deals are helpful PSA for people who need a cheap sim for receiving calls/sms.

          • @CodeXD: not trying to be negative, but something you don't know before does not mean it is a deal.

            • @FlyingPanda99: You are right. However, since learning about it, I have been able to get a 2nd JB Perks code (free $10), and free burrito from GYG.

Based on previous deals, $10 perks code comes through about 3 times a year, and numerously JB perks deal throughout.

You yourself won't need to request a JB perks code anymore.

              • -3

@CodeXD: It is irrelevant what you can do with the SIM card.
Sorry to say, but $5 ALDI SIM card is not a deal.

                • @FlyingPanda99:

It is irrelevant what you can do with the SIM card.

I don't understand what you mean.

This deal gets you a cheap sim card that will remain active for 1 year. Things that you can do with said sim card is definitely relevant.

              • +1

@CodeXD: Just want to pitch in, thanks for this post. I have 2 sims in my phone and had been buying cheap Kogan deals or other methods to keep one SIM alive just for SMS codes and whatnot. Never knew about this cheap method, so highly appreciate it OP.

    • just because it hasnt been posted doesnt mean it is not a deal. where else can you get a second phone number for $5/year?

    • been like this for the last 3 years

closer to 10 years, i'd say.

  • +5

Nothing special. It's been like this since the beginning.

    • +3

Not the point. Some of the top rated deals on OzBargain are "regular" prices. It needn't been a limited offer for it to be a bargain. Surely a bargain (ie a product or service that significantly cheaper than competitors) that's always available is better than one that isn't ?

  • +3

I used this for a day to port out and back in to Boost. Just keep in mind there's no data allowance - they simply charge 5c per MB. Chews through data very quickly. I had to turn off mobile data on my phone just to make it through one day.

  • Do they offer eSIM?

    • No.

    • +7

If you need eSIM, next best thing is Amaysim at $10/yr.

      • Thanks! That's actually really good too, makes it a breeze to use as a new number for sign up bonuses.

      • Link? I couldn't find it on their long expiry page.

        • +2

https://www.amaysim.com.au/plans/mobile-plans/as-you-go/ or just use any prepaid plan and let it expire/switch to PAYG. Minimum top up is $10 which is good for 365 days.

          • @ethan961: Thank you I was looking in the wrong section

          • @ethan961: is it confirmed that i can just buy one of their prepaid (like the current 50% off $12 or $16 deals)
then cancel auto renew and let it expire and it will auto switch to PAYG?

            • @furythree: Yes, it will become PAYG after inclusions expire, or switch it yourself at any time.

              • @ethan961: awesome just bought one for $7 which is cheaper than the PAYG option cheers

                • @furythree: You'd still have to add credit after it expires at some point so it depends on your use case if it's actually cheaper (eg. if you need to send a text, you'll have to top up $10 anyways). Maybe it's possible with a $2 SIM or free eSIM if you never need to text out, never tried myself.
I looked through my emails and on an old number I had in 2019, the number was active PAYG for a year after the normal inclusions expired (never topped up, got an email 12mos later that the ($0) PAYG credit was expiring). About 4 months afterwards, I was emailed warning that the account/number would be terminated in 9 days if not topped up, then again with 12hrs warning before termination. Not sure what their policy is today, but that was my experience.

      • +1

you could also switch to amaysim postpaid, i parked my spare number there unused for years now without paying anything. very handy.

        • how much is postpaid?

        • Postpaid what? Wouldn't there be ongoing fees to maintain a postpaid plan?

      • Does Amaysim eSIM work with Wearables? e.g. Apple Watch?

Tried to find something to put in the new Apple Watch SE but couldn't find any PAYG that works (waiting for Woolworths Mobile to offer such plan for wearables…)

        • Apparently not but I don't have a wearable or iPhone so not sure how easy that would be to get around.

  • Free shipping?

  • Can this be used just for incoming calls?

    • +2

Yep, you can use this just for receiving calls and SMS. Only $5 a year to keep it alive.

      • Perfect, Thanks

      • Can you confirm it’s possible to recharge by $5.
        Aldi site say:
“Add PAYG credit as you need
With our $15, $25 and $35 PAYG options”

Or are you saying buy another $5 and port your number into that one?

        • There is no $5 recharge option. You would need to port out and port back in.

          • +1

@greatlamp: That is what I do for my spare sim. Port to a $2 Telstra sim (only took a couple of minutes to port last time) and back to another Aldi $5 sim. Save $8 :D.

            • @rski: kinda, but with 15 you get 15 cred and you spent 7 to get 5.

              • @furyou: also, if you have $15 credit on your account, you may be able to hit up aldi mobile chat and ask to pay $15 with your credit. This way, you may be able to get 2 years out of paying $15 if you don't use any of it in the first year (You won't get $15 credit for using $15 credit so it is not an infinite loop).

                • @CodeXD: You can't buy PAYG credit using PAYG credit. It can only be used to buy one of the monthly recharge plans.

                  • @rski: Did you read the forum post I linked? Someone said they were able to, so worth a try if you have credit built up.

                    • @CodeXD: They never said what the PAYG credit was used for apart from extending the expiry. There is no mention of buying PAYG credit with PAYG credit. They pay the difference between their PAYG credit and who knows what. They might be recharging the cheapest plan which would last 1 month while also extending the PAYG credit for a year.
Their post doesn't make sense because if they have to 'pay the difference' each year, there would be no excess PAYG credit building up because it all got used as partial payment.

              • @furyou: I don't use all the credit anyway so $5 is more than enough, $15 would be wasted for me.

            • @rski: Last time when I tried to port to a $2 Telstra sim they asked me to pick a plan. I didn't continue as I thought you have to recharge to do that. How do you port to Telstra successfully without recharging and pick a plan?

              • @Bargain321: I don't remember the exact option but it was a standard number porting via the website. You definitely can port without a recharge.

      • +3

        @CodeXD
No, it actually lasts longer than a year, to be exact 455 (365+90) days of free receiving/incoming sms and calls

        https://i.imgur.com/HJAH7Bv.png
        https://www.aldimobile.com.au/search?q=sim+expire

      • Just wondering, what's the difference between this and a $2 SIM from woolies, telstra, etc?
