Where to Sell/Buy Second Hand Items in Sydney CBD?

Hey Guys. I'm new to Sydney.

Tried with Facebook marketplace but most of the sellers are too far away in rural areas. I don't drive so it is a bit tough for me.

Would be awesome if there is a second hand shop in CBD area.

Thanks for any suggestions!

The online forum known as 'FreeCycle' works very well in Melbourne/Victoria (all stuff is free). I'd be surprised if there was not an active FreeCycle community operating in the Sydney CBD.

What type of second hand stuff are you looking for?

  • I don't drive so it is a bit tough for me

Postage/Couriers are surprisingly cheap, compared to public transport.

Just need to be comfortable with the risk that the item doesn't turn up or is damaged or not what you expect.

    Also check ebay.

    What kind of items?

There are several second hand shops on George st. Start at cnr Hay st and walk towards Railway square.

Twice a year I stick my head inside one and laugh at the stupidly high laptop prices.

  • Have you limited the radius of your searches on FB Marketplace? Doubt there would be a shortage of second hand items close to the CBD.

  • Several pawn shops at the Chinatown/Central end of George Street.

Be careful with cheap second hand items on FB from sellers that are "rural". These are often scams post, they list the product at way below the market rate to make it irresistible, the location is in the middle of no where to have a look in person. And of course, once u paid for it, the item never arrives because the scammer doesn't have it in the first place.

  • Join your local Buy Nothing group (search for "buy nothing" + your suburb name). They are based on only your immediate local area. Sometimes as big as several suburbs (in more rural areas) but often only part of one suburb. Depends how many members, they usually break into smaller groups once they reach 1000+ members. If you are part of your local group you can get all sorts of stuff for free and it should all be within walking distance.

If you can't find your local group by searching as I suggested above, pm me your location and I'll find out which one is for you. Sometimes they don't have the suburbs in the name.
