Bought one "box damaged" oled years ago , pretty happy with it.

    • +17

I bought a Refurb first and it died after a few days. Absolute pain to return and arrange a refund (they don’t refund you until they receive and inspect it themselves despite how much proof of the fault you have).
I then bought a box damaged and it’s been fine.

Unless you’re saving about 50%, I wouldn’t recommend a refurb and their feedback supports this.

      • +4

        Also, 12month warranty….pass!

        • +2

Agree - lot of money and 1 year guarantee. Big nup.

        • +12

          Wont hold up;
ive had to take this to bat with another box damaged good before.

Ombudsmen ruled that the boxes damage should have no impact on the device inside (otherwise its device damaged); so should have full warranty.

Just be aware you'll need to be willing to go through the hoops if you want to do that.

          I love ACL

          • +2

@MasterScythe: I think retailers and companies are starting to understand the ACL threat these days… I get far less issues nowadays.

Had a Samsung $800 vacuum that was 2 days outta warranty (2 years motor) fixed for free recently by the repairer, block head in JB wanted to charge initially beforehand. Repairer never did.

Had a 55 9500G Sony Panel replaced after it developed lines for no reason. Around 2 years. They never questioned it.

        • -3

12 months…which is the standard warranty for new TVs as well?

          • +2

@boretentsu: Good point, which i think its an abuse considering the price you are paying. Even a hisense is cheaper and comes with 3 years warranty

          • +7

@boretentsu: 12 months is what they'd like you to believe. Fit for purpose is the actual rule. Higher quality models are expected to last longer in particular. Especially expensive ones. I've read of 7yo models being replaced.

          • -1

            @boretentsu: Yes it is

            • -1

@scud70: Lol we're being negged for stating facts

              • @boretentsu: Lol I guess stating what the manufacturers typically list as warranty is being taken as us agreeing to warranty being 12 months… I know your just saying that's what majority list as their warranty period …

      • refurb used TV - yeah that'd be a nah from me

I'm starting to get jack of our bought-new (13 months ago) SONY XR65A80J

as for the last two days in a row it has dropped BlueTooth (I listen to it through headphones)

and switching on and off nothing seems to work until I go and unplug the power plug from the floor socket

wait 10 angry seconds (to discharge capacitors) before sighing, reaching down and plugging it in again

to reboot it taking another two minutes before I can restart several related devices.

If a brand-new device is so flaky - I'd stay away from a refurb fancy TV.

Too many fancy dancy computer software and hardware things to go wrong just after it's run out of 'warranty'

  • Refurbished A80J 55” oled down to $1349…not sure if there’s a difference between refurbished and box damaged so didn’t want to risk it.

    • +2

Reasonably significant difference as the typical definition of box-damaged is: This item may have damaged carton. It is an unused & undamaged item in its original packaging.

      • Yep, not sure if it’s Sony just clearing out 2021 stock and you might actually get a brand new one.

    • +2

      yup grabbed one.

      • +1

same. lets see what happens. appears to be almost half price from current selling price.

        • +2

at this price OLED 55" is hard to pass

        • +1

actually, ended up cancelling because couldn't cancel my Samsung order.

using my member discount I ordered QN85A 55" direct from Samsung a few bucks cheaper last Friday and they managed to ship it early morning today.

so I cancelled the one I could cancel

OLED would have been nice, but QN85A, brand new, same price, is also good. full array dimming and gets lots brighter. another QLED for me I guess..

          • @shabaka: Based on the comments and feedback you might’ve dodged a bullet…😃

I bought a refurbished OLED from Sony thinking I was getting a good deal. The box arrived with "FAULTY" written on the side.. surprise, surprise there's a big line down the middle of the screen. I raised a ticket with Sony who coordinated for the TV to be collected but failed to advise me of when so I wasn't home. Later I gave a date that I would be home, took the day off work and no one turned up to collect. Do yourself a favour and just buy from JB hifi or something.

            • +1

@ne-us: wow! yeah. ok, I ended up getting a Samsung Frame 2021 65" from Samsung web store. they gave me 30% loyalty discount and ended up paying just $930 for it.

no local dimming, but all I care about is right size and low input lag for Xbox Series X. fun times ahead

        • @Logical Cool. Can you let us know what arrives? Hopefully they are clearing 2021 stock and you get a brand new stock. 👍

        • Did you get a brand new one or refurbished when they delivered it? 😃

  • Thinking to pull the plug….but concerned over Refurbished

    • +1

Pull the trigger, or give it the plug?

      • hahaha… thankyou for the correction!

  • 60hz of course?

    • +5

Ports 3n4 are HDMI 2.1 based on Sonys specs page so should be able to do 4k 120hz on those ports if that's what you mean by your comment.

      • +2

Whats wrong with these people negging you? Your info is absolutely correct. @scud70

“It's a future-proof TV as it comes with two HDMI 2.1 inputs that allow you to play 4k games up to 120 fps from gaming consoles or PCs, and it has variable refresh rate (VRR) support after a firmware update. “

        • +1

Hehe thanks, it's an important feature to check moving forward for TVs, negs just part of OzB … 🙂

  • or 55" oled rfb (x80j) for $1349

  • At least its not damaged box stock .

    • +2

Isn't damaged box better than refurb?

    • -1

I was being sarcastic as now sony has refurbs and b4 everything was box damaged .

      • +1

Sony eBay has always had both

  • +1

I have this model, I recommend it except for the hideously reflective screen - bad for bright environments. Got mine for around $1800 new when it came out.

  • +7

Sonys warranty isnt worth the paper its printed on, would be careful with something like this

    • -3

I'd completely disagree with that but each to their own.

  • +2

I don't recommend to get sony's refurbished products. I bought a refurbished OLED TV before and the TV had some big scratches on the panel. I think they don't inspect returned products and just sell them again. I tried to return it and refund but it took so much time like three months to be refunded. Also the customer support was so bad, them response was so slow.

  • If it was the x95j then it would be a good price proposition but x90j was a bit sub par, plus being a refurb direct from Sony, OzB sent me the other way when I was considering one not too long ago.

  • Sony 43" X85J is also available for $599.82 …
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/284462350512

This is probably the best 43" TV available.

      Also the
      Sony KD43X85K for $763.62
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/284937028301

      • I have this and it is a ripper tv………. grab is if you're on the fence about it.

        • does it still have issues with 4K@120Hz blurry issue like the previous X85J?

  • -2

I don't recommend any Sony TVs. Purchased my first one (new) 2 years ago (X9000H) and have had multiple problems with it.

My TV keeps crashing and restarting during normal use, whether I'm using an app or HDMI input. It is extremely frustrating how unreliable it is. Imagine you are trying to watch a movie, and instead of commercials, your TV restarts multiple times? Imagine you are playing a game, in the middle of a boss, and your TV reboots resulting in you dying and losing everything?

Sony support is useless. Always a different person and they don't seem to keep notes on your issue. You must repeat yourself and recount the story to each individual you go through, they all keep asking the same unhelpful questions: "Have you tried turning it off and on? Have you updated the software? Have you reset to factory settings?"

After hours of phone calls, email exchanges and painful diagnostic/troubleshooting, they finally agreed to send someone to replace the logic board! (but not without threatening to charge me for the service if the tech could not find any issues)

It made no difference at all. The problem is still there.

Among a painfully slow and unresponsive android system, a soundbar that loses sync randomly, sudden crashes and restarts, no VRR with local dimming, promises of 'upcoming' features via software updates… I will never buy a Sony TV again and can't really recommend it to anyone.

    • 4 Sony TV's in the past 3 years……. Asides from 1 having the black screen……I've been fault free.

Sony support team was impeccable in every stage……..
