Gore-Tex is actually worth paying extra for since this is an outdoor shoe you will be using in the elements.
I'd have to disagree. Goretex shoes are terrible for most activities in Australia. Once water gets in, it doesn't drain out easily. They also have terrible ventilation, so you'll have sweaty stinky feet. Shoes in Australia need ventilation 99% of the time.
Goretex is only good for taller cut boots if you're traversing very shallow water, or on shoes like this if you're walking in snow.
I loved my North Face GTX shoes but after a year the sole started to swell and now it’s lumpy underfoot. I’d still buy GTX again though, nice to have the waterproofing when walking in rain or crossing water etc. Never found them hot/sweaty.
@nubzy: i never had that issue either, GTX is amazing and God's gift to humans
I see you are in QLD so I can relate to what you said.
But, you might change your view if you try hiking during Melbourne's wet winter using shoes that have good ventilation.I cant agree completely with this, since its a bit of a generalisation.
If youre doing big hikes and know what youre doing, sure.
I personally use Gore Tex shoes on shorter walks where there is dampness, or even for general every day use when its raining. Never had an issue with ventilation or sweaty stinky feet. I always travel with Gore Tex runners ever since a month long Europe trip where I had wet feet 80% of the time.
Day to day when I dont need any waterproofing its just Kayanos.
If youre doing proper hikes then you would know what works for you and would likely have multiple sets of boots.
If your feet are sweating or not ventilating then it’s not real gortex. What you are describing is the opposite of Goretex
@UberIsCool: Even in good conditions, Gore-Tex doesn’t allow sweat to pass through faster than you produce it, especially when you’re exerting yourself. This is especially true for your feet, which are the second sweatiest part of your body after your armpits.

@Top G: Gore-Tex shoes will let heat out and breathe while keeping water out from outside. If your feet are sweating badly in any type of shoe then Gore-Tex will help but perhaps not prevent. But long enough time and your feet could sweat and socks get wet, I’ve experienced that on very long hikes.
@UberIsCool: Goretex is great for jackets and pants. Does not handle sweaty feet at all well. Also the 'waterproof' is only for a certain time. I walked the Camino in Spain and after enough hours the water came in my Merrell Goretex boots. Once wet, it took days of dry time. I even took a whole day off and wore my night light shoes for the day - and they were still wet. After many pairs with and many pairs without - just have to say, avoid it in footwear.
@ShipShapeRC: Any shoe will take hours to dry once wet, need a heater or fireplace to dry them. We used to arrive at field huts after a day hike and put our shoes next to the gas heater
I smile everytime I see your username.
If only I had your courage.I think "Ah, to be 14 again …" 🙂
Looking for a pair to take travelling with me (long walks in the city and the occasional hike). Are these shoes good for that? I assume the Gore-Tex will be too 'stuffy' for this?
I think so, I like the similar Merrell shoes I have, they have a wider fit than Saloman.
Bought a pair. Been wanting to get something with better grip on slopes so thanks.
Merrell really went down hill after they sold out a few years back, QC and comfort isn't what it was once known for. Imo.
I would agree. Much better shoes out there for less money.
what would you recommend?
It depends what you want. I believe
- Arcteryx ($$$$$)
- Salomon
- Asolo
- La Sportiva
Are good brands.
Generally, just go to a proper outdoor store like Bogong or Paddy Palling and get a proper fitout.
@ReqelinOz: A quick search on those brands and I couldn't find anything for less money.. :(
@ReqelinOz: I still bushwalk in a pair of La Sportiva boots that I bought 15 years ago - amazing shoes.
@martygeeoz: I still wear my Asolo boots I bought 15 years ago. They were like $250, and shit all over my "expensive" Asolo TPS 520, which completely delaminated when I did Frenchmans Cap in 2021.
@ReqelinOz: Never owned Asolo but La sportiva are unrivalled. Arcteryx and salomon don’t even deserve to be in the same list as la sportiva
@ReqelinOz: I have 15 yo Scarpa and they have been incredible, still look brand new
Anybody else getting:
No locations matching your search criteria.
Try and search on another location.for "Sydney", "Melbourne" or "Australia"? I guess no click and collect option for either this or the goretex ones.
https://www.theathletesfoot.com.au/store-locator works, but wouldn't allow you to set a store for click and collect. Crap website. I'll wait for another opportunity to get cheap shoes without paying $10 only for the risk the shoes don't fit.
Me too. Melbourne couldn't search any store. Don't know if any one find store has the same promotion?
I am actually curious how much money they lose daily because of people not being able to click and collect.
I don't think they will lose money for this kind of on clearance items. As many people will buy with postage at this price point anyway (not many sizes left is the proof.)
@Boomer85: I see it works for other products.
That message is misleading.
I clicked and collected mine from their Marrickville store (Sydney).
These are only for BIGfoot.
Yup, only size 11.5, 12 and 13 left.
Inflated rrp but looks to be cheapest. Gore-tex version for $80 https://www.theathletesfoot.com.au/merrell-mqm-3-gore-tex-me…
