you want 8" woofers… in your ceiling… damn son

    • +2

I have 4 of these in my ceiling. they are good

      • How big is your room? I bought 4 but still haven't installed them yet but thinking my room ain't big enough for that many. It's 4.8 x 4.2

        • +1

I've got them in 4m x 5m room, 4 in the ceiling for atmos (Driven by Denon x3700h for anyone interested) - no issues that I've heard. Grills can also be painted (remove paper first).

The normal sale price for them is normally in the $300s for reference as well.

          • @Jason-Vic: I already have two pairs, bought them what feels like a couple of years ago. These will be used for atmos as well, have a Yamaha RX-A3070 with a 5.2 KEF/SVS sub setup. Did you install them as per Dolby's setup guide or just fit them into your room/setup the best you can? With my seating position I think the rear 2 would be pretty much at the back wall if following Dolby's guide.

            https://www.dolby.com/about/support/guide/speaker-setup-guid…

            • @dreamstation: Practicality of the room limited being able to follow the Atmos guide fully, however tried to the best of the constraints of the room. One sits behind seating (almost back wall) and one in front (Towards mid of room), however not at Atmos best practice angles due to room physical constraints. I also brought my couch ~30-50cm forwards to also help with the angle.

              • @Jason-Vic: So for Atmos height channels, you can just use down firing ceiling speakers?

                • +1

@atlas: Short answer is you can (audiophile answer will be longer and likely no).

The product for this deal also has tweeters that can be angled to further assist with directing sound.

Ultimately it comes down to what you want to achieve, budget, room constraints, comprises/non compromises you want to make and personal preference.

Dolby has information on their website for setups, some information on whirlpool (HT forum) and AVS Forums has plenty of topics around it as well.

                  • @Jason-Vic: Curious!
What does audiophile do, for atmos, if not down firing speaker ?
Are they likely to use reflective ceiling speaker
                    ?

              • @Jason-Vic: Yea I have moved the couch off the back wall as well, maybe 50cm or a little more. Just wasn't sure about having the second set of ceiling speakers right against the back wall.

Any chance you can upload of picture of your ceiling and PM me link? I wouldn't mind seeing where yours are.

        • my room is similar size to yours. yamaha a6a powering them. if you have them, install them

  • Does anyone have any recommendations for an appropriate receiver (Bluetooth capable) for a pair of these

    • +1

I use the Yamaha WXA50 for a pair of outdoor speakers.

      • +1

What outdoor speakers would you recomend?

    • +2

I used to use a little amp with a chromecast audio (discontinued) plugged in. For just stereo, you don't need to go 'big'. Like this: Hi-Fi 320W Bluetooth 5.0 Power Amplifier Stereo Active Subwoofer Amp 2.1 Channel U-Disk Music Player [Douk Audio M1 PRO Upgrade] https://amzn.asia/d/1O0FPsw

      • Sorry silly question probably, can I use this instead of a Sonos amp? Just want to play Spotify cheers Sam

        • +1

yeah, you could do Bluetooth to a tiny amp with that capability (I think the one I linked had it), or chromecast (with a device plugged into the aux on the amp) like I used to use, and probably other technologies as well. With Sonos you're paying for slightly increased reliability, but you can achieve the same things with google home / chromecast devices. Anyway, the little amp is the starting point

Good price - anyone used these with a Sonos amp?

    • Would like to know aswell is there a cheaper alternative

  • +1

Good price, but my ideal would be three ways for this size.. there are some but not many

  • I purchase 2 pairs of the 6inch, from what i can tell from photos the yamahas look like some of the best ceiling speakers.

They appear to be more ‘sealed up’ on the backside as well compared to other brands. Which id imagine would get dusty as hell in a ceiling.

Do people just place these under the insulation? or is there a better way?

    • My installer cut a hole in the insulation around speaker so nothing ontop. Also using these for atmos top centre speakers. Very happy with these.

      • No backbox?

    • Generally when installed properly there is a baffle installed with the driver so no it doesnt just sit in the ceiling space getting dusty.
The better in ceiling units are sealed and not just exposed magnet.

    • Only if tiled roof.

  • for the price of the 4 inches, it worth getting 2 pairs of them compared to a pair of the 8 inchs?

  • So I was super keen on these speakers so as usual I had a quick look to see if any 1 has it better.
Radioparts has it for $350 for 1 or $330ea 2+

You have to create an account if I remember correctly (was years ago when I did this) you don't need an abn.

    • Deal prices have ranged in the $300s for these at various times and Radio parts was one place (via ebay + coupon) I bought as set from a few years ago in the past as well.

    • The $330 price is without GST - so $363 really.

Would these be ok for rears and not just Atmos heights?

  • Crazy, I got these from eBay in 2016 for $248. Good speakers.

  • Can these be used in the living room just for music? Are they loud enough? My Living is 6m x 5m. I needed I can add a subwoofer. Thanks for your help
