  • Anyone have one of these?
How does it compare to the U2711 as far as clarity?
Is it good for a Mac?

    • I bought 3 of these 6 weeks ago when they were last on special at this price and I'm very happy with them. I haven't used the U2711 so I can't offer a direct comparison. I use 2 in portrait and 1 in landscape.

I use the display port (to mini display port as part of a 5 monitor eyefinity setup) and I find these monitors to be extremely clear/crisp on Win7. As they have a display port they should work fine with a Mac.

  • The Whirlpool forum has 54 pages of discussion on this one. See it here http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1718594 . You may have to be a member to view it.

  • Just bought 30 of these for work. They are great monitors.

Even with corporate bulk discount they weren't this cheap so this is a great price.

Only thing I don't like about them is there is no HDMI ports. Only DVI, VGA, and Display Port

    • HDMI doesn't support the display's full resolution.

      • Even the cheapest current video cards - like the AMD Radeon HD 6450 for $37 - support 1920x1200 over HDMI.

      • HDMI supports up to 19201200 (for a long time I thought it was 19201080 until I tested out myself). You can purchase a HDMI to DVI cable, however only video will be transmitted.

    • There's really no point in having a HDMI port for a 16:10 monitor designed for office use. The future of outputs for computers is heading towards DisplayPort. The only reason HDMI should be included in a monitor is if it's intended to be used as an entertainment monitor and using 16:9, that way gaming consoles can be plugged in as well.

      • Unfortunately, a lot of home theatre gear don't support 16:10 properly, and since the U2412M doesn't have image scaling, the image will be stretched vertically. I have this problem with my PS3, which is damn annoying since I'm pretty sure the Xbox 360 doesn't have this problem, as it supports a wide range of resolutions.

  • Can I use this monitor with PS3?
this monitor doesn't have HDMI then What should I do for it?

    • Use a HDMI to DVI/DP adaptor from ebay.

  • Apart from the Dell Outlet price recently, has this ever got to a lower price than this?

    • Monitors from the Dell outlet usually only have 12 months warranty. This one has 3 years minimum and the ability to buy a one or two year extension on that for a very reasonable price. The warranty is exchange onsite by courier.

  • If you're considering these have a look at the Yamakasi Catleap monitors.

    • what's special about this monitor?

  • After many months of holding off, I've finally taken the plunge and bought one. I bought the extra warranty too, which BobD pointed out was a very reasonable price (~$32 for 2 additional years, 5 years total). Hopefully it'll arrive before the weekend :)

    • Yeah, I bought one this afternoon. I settled for 3 years warranty because I have never had a monitor for longer than 3 years. The delivery estimate for me was on or before Monday 23 July but I am hoping for Friday.

    • yeah too good to pass! and $32 to make it 5yr warranty is a no brainer. Thanks OP.

  • My Dell 2408WFP CCFL backlight (or inverter) has just gone (the display started flickering then went off - now it only comes on for a second on power up). It is just a few months over the three year warranty and I was hoping that for $750 it would last quite a few more years :-(

Does anyone know if it is economical to fix? My searching seems to suggest that it may not be easily fixed, not something for those who just tinker with hardware, and thus could be expensive, especially compared to the price of something like the U2412M or even a replacement.

How does the U2412M compare to the 2408WFP for general computing? I am not a graphic artist but live on the display so think my eyes deserve something high quality. I was hoping to move up to a 27" in a few years time - is there a 27" equivalent of the U2412M and what price?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    • Pretty sure you have a claim for your statutory rights, a $750 monitor SHOULD last for more than just 3 years.

      • Really? I would have thought the warranty was the only claim I had. Still, based on your suggestion, I will give Dell a ring and see. I haven't had any experience with them so not sure how it will go. Thanks for your post.

        • They won't budge, usually you'll have to end up with the ACCC or something and make a complaint.

    • If it's a Dell you are after, they have 5 monitors in their home range. Three 24" models, a 27" and a 30". You can see them all here http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/sna.aspx?c=au&cs=audhs1&l… . The 27" is the U2711 at $899. I have this one now. I came by it accidentally. I bought a 2709W in 2008 and it failed twice in 3 years. The second replacement, late last year, was the U2711. It's a great machine but it's physically too big for me now. I need a smaller machine and the U2412M suits me well but I'll now have to dispose of the U2711.

BTW, the Dell warranty service was excellent. Once they were certain I actually had a problem they shipped a replacement out and picked up the old one a few days later.

      • Any idea if/when the 27" will use LEDs? I realise (or at least I believe) that CCFL may in some cases give better colour spectrum but I prefer the LEDs because of less heat, quicker to start up, and (hopefully) last longer.

I'm also interested that you think 27" is too large. I've found that a 24" can't really display two whole web pages side-by-side and see all the content (since many Web pages seem to be around 1000 pixels or more wide).

        • You have to ask Dell about their product development. I didn't say too large. I said "physically too big for me now". The unsaid part was "for my particular circumstances." I just received my monitor. 3 days from order on Monday afternoon. I didn't know it was coming. I was lucky to be at home. That is a serious bit of effort by Dell, their logistics agents (Schenker) and StarTrack Express. I live in northern VIC about 100km from Albury. Gotta go and set it up.

        • I received mine today too, I've just hooked it up :)

I knew it was coming today by using the startrack express website and entering my order number into the "reference number" field.

The dell website on the other hand is useless.

        • I checked STE yesterday and they didn't know about it and I forgot to check today. It's a good monitor for this price but I wouldn't like to pay $399 for it. Just checked it out with Dead Pixel Buddy and no dead pixels. Lowered the brightness to 50%.

    • My boss had his die and replaced it without too much difficulty.

  • It's a good monitor for the price. This deal seems to occur every month though…

  • Deal is on again… Ends 23rd August.
