Great price for bulbs that are home kit compatible! most charge quite a premium for the privilege of working with apples system.

  • +2

Thanks! Didn't need it, bought some though :D

    • Mother nature will thank you.

    • -2

Why? If you don't need apple ecosystem then this is not even a good deal for you as there were plenty of google/alexa RGB bulbs posted here at over half the price.

      • Oh thanks, didn't know that.
Could you link / share the names please? I'll buy even if normal price, need to get some, would be great if I can control all the bulbs directly from phone without hub.

        I 'need' HomeKit, so…

  • 92CLNR1G28B94R

  • Anyone that owns these - are they any good?

    • +2

I have a few - one on a floor lamp, a few on various light fixtures in kitchen/living/dining areas, one on a bunker light outside.
I schedule some of them in darker parts of the house to come on before sunset so there's light in the house, others in my office to come on in the morning before I start work.
The one outside is set to come on at sunset and turn off at sunrise to the front entrance path is lit at night.

No issues with them, they are terrific for HomeKit.

    • I've had them for a year. They were so flakey. Will connect for a day or two then no longer reachable. Had to always reset. No issue with the nano leafs or other devices.

However, looks like there was an update to my google home hub recently and surprisingly these are now solid.

  • Perfect timing, needed to get myself two, but I'll settle for a 3 pack.

Just a FYI - despite having Thread, these bulbs will not be upgraded to use Matter - if that matters to you

    https://appleinsider.com/articles/22/11/03/nanoleaf-announce…

    • +4

Thanks. I'll pass then. My smarthome is complicated enough already, will stick with Zigbee until Matter is ready.

  • How do these things work?

edit: I was confusing matter with Thread. Thread is a yet another mesh protocol equivalent to zigbee or bluetooth mesh.

Requires HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K (either gen) in Apple world.
Without that, you can use bluetooth from your phone, but that would be lame.

Importantly, how bright is colour mode? Good like Hue or LifX? or very dim like all the other cheaper colour bulbs?

  • Average brightness 806 lumens
    Max brightness 1100 lumens

    From another site

    • I suspect they are copying Philips. 806 lumen at "normal" warm white setting, 1100 for cool white.

But that does nothing to answer my question on colour mode ie RGB.

feels like a clearance sale in the name of some exlcusive coupon code

a bit of buyer beware: des[ote these bulbs support both bluetooth and Thread, their ideal user experience should really be deployed in a Thread-enabled environment
there is noticeable lag when used via bluetooth
also they won't get upgraded to Matter standard due to onboard chip memory limit

new wave of Matter essential bulbs are coming from nanoleaf

    • yeah, they are clearing them out as they are releasing new versions of their lights with Matter support enabled.
Matter support is only a concern if you want it working with multiple smart home systems together eg. HomeKit, plus Alexa/amazon.

For HomeKit only people, it's worth noting that the new/upcoming bulbs with Matter will NOT actually have the adaptive lighting feature that these 'older' Thread only versions have. For me, I love the adaptive lighting that changes the temperature throughout the day.

      • So the so-called "Circadian Lighting" can only be enabled with the Thread connection? Not just a built-in feature that you can control with just Bluetooth connection? Also why does Matter support matter when bulbs like this can be controlled by both HomeKit and Google?

        • the adaptive lighting is not protocol related/dependent, it is a HomeKit feature…
From what I read, Nanoleaf is not building it into their new bulbs/lights for whatever reason (cost probably… I think there's a level of testing/certification required for Apple to signoff on it).
Other brands of smart bulbs eg. Meross don't have adaptive lighting either because they didn't build it in (they also didn't build in Thread connectivity… they are probably a different i.e. 'budget' version that do the basics)

Matter is good if you have multiple different home hubs in combination - eg. you have a HomeKit hub (eg. homepod/appleTV) plus Alexa plus a Google home or something… if you are only using 1 ecosystem (eg. HomeKit only) then Matter isn't really needed and these current/older versions with Thread support will be perfect.

          • @jasiano: Thanks for the clarification. I just did a quick search and for example LIFX bulbs support Google, Alexa and Siri controls. Assuming that the bulb can be connected to all three, then I can potentially have a homepod, an Alexa device and a Google home device all at my home and use any of them to control the bulb right? Also any cheap and easy way to get Thread router without using homepod/Apple TV?

            • @thomaslzr: See this comment below: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13222280/redir

you can use it with all your home hubs currently without Matter support. Potentially they may cause interference/synch issues as they might communicate slightly differently with the light/device (although I doubt it). TBH I don't know what protocol Google Home or Alexa uses.
The point of Matter is that they all talk to it exactly the same way, and for any other home hubs that may or may not be released.

The Thread 'router' is the light bulb itself - when you have multiple then they all form a mesh (just like a wifi mesh system) of Thread devices which in theory means their responsiveness to any commands you issue is improved.

      • Good for you who found use of their circadian lighting feature : )

the strategic value of deploying these bulbs , is because the light socket/light well is usually high up , so these bulbs enjoy preamium positions as signal hubs to saturate the area with robust Thread coverage. This is one of the reasons these bulbs commands a premium as gateway infrastructure to deploy smart home network. However, for this reason, the bulbs themselves ideally would have Matter support

Currently deployed two home pod mini to cover high traffic area and they are Matter-ready, keen to pick up cheap Matter accessories because it lowers the barrier of entry to adopt

  • I have a few lamps with E14 sockets, anyone know where I can get some reliable E27/E14 adapters?

Is there any risk with going with the cheap ones on eBay?

    • Adaptors aren't sold in Australia. Just solder some wires

    • +2

Amazon is your best bet, bought a pack of 4 a couple of days ago and works fine

    • +1

E14 bulb in e27 socket is OK, but the other way your bulb is likely to stick out much further than the lamps is designed for.

    • Im renting a place with inly e14s on the walls, the adaptors from amazon work fine but the nanoleafs stick out

  • New to these Matter & Thread protocol concept, but as these Nanoleaf smart bulbs support both Google Assist and Siri control, can't you use it simultaneously with two platforms so why do we still need Matter? Is it just to provide backwards compatibility?

    • To provide forwards compatibility. The new Matter devices should work with many more systems, without individual support. Like Zigbee does already, kind-of.

  • +1

    do these work with tuya?

  • Thanks OP. Been eyeing this pack for a while.

  • What's the Nanoleaf have to make it such a premium over these?

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-smarterhometm-10w-colour-…

    • +2

HomeKit support for one. Like anything Apple, you got to pay to play.

the Kogan is bluetooth connection wchih may or may not be as reliable compared to Thread connection… this would depend on any number of factors (distance, connection signal strength etc…). In my own experience (in a 4x2 house) the thread devices do respond faster than non-thread devices I have.

  • +1

Most excellent. Matter doesn't Matter if you're just on Homekit.

  • Excellent. I actually wanted the Thread version over the upcoming Matter versions for the Apple adaptive lighting compatibility.
