nbn FTTC Connection - Cable from Pit

Hi,

Just trying to wrap my head around getting an fttc nbn connection running.

This is the cable that runs form the kerbside pit on the street to the property. Would all existing homes/apartment unassumingly have this already? if there is none or its "broken" who replaces it? is this an out of pocket expense? can anyone advise a rough amount on how much this is?

Thank you

From the curb its using your existing copper phone line, tech will just come in and put a new connection point in your house for the NBN.

    • thanks mate, is there something I need to have already installed inside the property? like a data connection point?

Nah they should just send you out an NBN NTD box which you'll connect your phone line to then your modem connects to the NTD. So yeah actually no tech needed.

nbn FTTC box is called an NCD. nbn NTD is the box used for HFC, Fixed Wireless and FTTP. As for an installer it depends on your nbn service class. An installer came out for my FTTC install.

@Twix: True! The more you know, eh? Pretty sure they were intent on sending out a tech when I connected my current place but I was like yeah nah just send the box mate.

Most homes in the FTTC footprint already have a copper lead-in. nbn can replace the lead-in if it's broken at no cost to you. This is organized through your ISP.

My man, thank you. Then I assume the only out of pocket is for you to have your own phone line connection at the wall?

The NBN FTTC NCD comes with a phone cable and power cord packed in. If you have the old style phone plug though, you may need an adapter. (Also, connections can be problematic if you have multiple phone points in your house.)

You may also want to investigate upgrading to FTTP (which is 'free' if you order a 250/25 or faster plan). I decided to splurge on a faster plan to get my FTTC upgraded…

      • A phone line at the wall port should already be there. If not nbn have to install one. If you want the installed port moved there is a fee. Better yet ditch the copper and upgrade to FTTP. Do you get this message when you put your location into here?

Good news! Your location may be eligible to upgrade
Your location may be able to upgrade to FTTP if you order a plan based on nbn Home Fast or higher^.

        • wait, nbn will install the phone port? are there any out of pockets exp for anything?

and my area isnt available for an upgrade yet.

          • @txb: nbn install everything up to the first phone port. If you want ethernet data wiring to various rooms that is at your own cost. Brand new homes and knock down rebuilds have out of pocket nbn expenses.

Keep checking that link throughout the year for FTTP.

          • @txb: No the install is free for NBN FTTC if the Lead in is already provided. If they needed to run Copper then you would just pay the new development charge which is $300 I think.
I should know that given I sell it but anyway. Can look it up if need be.

            • @[Deactivated]: $300 is right for the new dev fee.

@Twix: Thought so. Thanks saved a portal login.

  • Don't you have to have a power point close by that the FTTC NCD can use?

You, and however many other households are connected to it, power the NBN device in the pit.

  • Yeah you do actually. This shouldn't be an issue if its going into an office type space. Otherwise yeah any licensed electrician can install a new one. Plus can also do the phone point at the same time if a registered cabler .

    • nbn install lead-ins. Not electricians.

Yeah I am aware that NBN install the Lead-ins, I was refering to installing a PowerPoint which they won't do, certainly not inside the house anyway.

Above Video from NBNCo explains the process.
I sell NBN so know how the process works.
I like it but will be easier once everyone that can be is on FTTP.
As the multi tech mix is Nessie to deal with from a support pov sometimes.
