Switching nbn Advice - Optus to More Telecom

Hello,
I'm currently paying $100/month for Optus NBN 100mbps speeds with an optus supplied modem.

Our apartment doesn't need speeds this high, More telecom with commbank discount offers 53.90/month for 50mbps for first 12 months which we are considering.

This is a big price difference, I have to pay off the existing Optus modem for $126 but that seems worth it.

Looks like I cannot use the Optus modem for more telecom as it is locked?. More offers a modem for $180 but it says pre configured? Does this mean down the track if I change providers again I'll have to get another modem?

Fyi my apartment is fttn.

Any advice on changing internet providers every year or so and avoiding paying for a modem each time? Thanks

Correct. Have tried this modem with More and you can't normally get access to change the authentication required.

One way is to look around - ebay, Gumtree for a used Telstra Smart Modem. these work well with More and can be found for around the $50 mark. There are two versions 2 and 3 which can work. (3 is better but can cost more)

Having this modem will mean you can switch providers at will.

    eg

    https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-modems-routers/telstra+smart+mo…

Its not the gateway modem. Smart Modem 2 or 3 - looks like a brick.

    • Second this advice. The Smart Modem 2 is a solid modem and can regularly be obtained for only $20-30

    • Thanks everybody. Just confirming, will any Telstra smart modem work with fttn? Or do I need a specific type?
A few on eBay don't say explicitly fttn

      • Basically any Telstra modem will work with FTTN, yes.

The DJA0231 version of the Telstra Smart Gateway Gen2 - the Technicolor one, not the other identical Gen2 (from Sagecomm I think) - has firmware hacks for removing bloat etc. And definitely works with FTTN.

      • It looks like this. If it doesnt move on. The Gen3 looks the same but its black, that will also work.

BTW this page will also show you how to setup as it should be the same. just that this is the info you need to use..

        Authentication:

ISP Username: Supplied in your email from More
ISP Password: Supplied in your email from More

Encapsulation mode: PPPoE (Which looks like its the same under mates example.

    • Agreed.

Also, you can purchase a second-hand Belong modem. I previously using Belong as ISP, they gave me a free Belong 4353 modem. (If you are not playing online games, I think it works fine)

You probably can try Belong DWA0122 modem for FTTN.

Often you can spot a second-hand (facebook mkt place, gum tree) with approx. $10-$30, if you pick it up from the seller.

**Just make sure you know how to login to the modem and change the user name and password.

Exactly above. I’d return the Optus Modem to Optus. Keep the $126 and buy a Telstra Gen 2 modem. Live happily ever after!

    • Are you able to return the modem?

      • I dont think you can their website says you need to pay this out in full, less whats been paid already. But check with Optus.

      • Got them to take mine the other day and they paid postage as I cancelled the service and I had over a year to go.

  • I'm with more and using a nighthawk AX1800. Supply your own modem.

    • How do you find more? I am thinking about switching to them as well.

      • Excellent service. Tangerine owns them. I was with Tangerine for 2.5 years but switched to get the discount from Commonwealth. Also, jumped to More on my mobile as they share the Telstra network.

  • More sells Google Nest Wifi, an entirely satisfactory option.

More sells Google Nest Wifi, an entirely satisfactory option.

      Except when it isn't.

      Fyi my apartment is fttn.

      From More:

PLEASE NOTE: Google Nest Wifi routers are not compatible for FTTN - A VDSL modem will be required

      https://www.more.com.au/storage/modems/Google_Nest_v6.pdf

A VDSL compatible modem is still required for an fttn service. The Google Nest Wifi would work with another VDSL modem in bridge mode, but given OP is cost conscious and downgrading speed it is more likely that they would prefer a modem/router that does everything rather than multiple devices.

      • Thanks for clarifying, I failed to check which gateways work with FTTN.

  • I'm currently using my Telstra supplied router with More's NBN offering. No technical issues, other than the 4G backup seems to be SIM locked to Telstra andI've not found a way to reconfigure it.

  • Hi, this is useful for me.. would the Telstra Business Smart Modem work too (for a FTTP connection)? Would that business modem be better than Telstra Smart Gateway Gen2?
