Infringement Notice: Fail to Obey Traffic Lights

Hi All,

Just need a bit of information, I recently received a traffic infringement notice for " Fail to Obey Traffic Lights " Elapsed time on red 0.5 Secs.

This is my first traffic fine in last 7 years, the last I received was in 2016.

I know we can't write a letter to waive it like we do if speed less than 10 kmph and good record in past 2 years.

Anyone has any idea what's the best way to deal with it.

Thanks

      • I looked it up. It’s $575 in Qld, unless the site Is incorrect… link: https://www.qld.gov.au/about/newsroom/increased-penalties-fo…

Where did you see >$1000? Possibly the business rate (for an unidentified driver)?

Fair, was looking at seatbelt - which is insane that that is double the red light fine. Atleast with the red light fine you may actually be endangering someone else.

  • Pay it once.
Three hail Marys as you are still alive.

  • I got a $1100 fine for having my phone in my lap. Pleaae roast me.

In addition to playing the fine, you are sentenced watch Dash Cam Owners Australia every Sunday night for the next two months so that you get to see the effect that red light runners have on other people.

    • If it’s their weekly release, just a bunch of guys saying “Hurr durr dash cam”

Thank you for your voluntary tax donation. The public thanks you

  • When I got a fine at the end of last year, I just paid it.

Do you have a dash cam?
Count the how many seconds amber light is.

I got away with one and only traffic infringement, running red light 0.5 seconds.
But I showed the amber light only lasted for 3.5 seconds, which was 0.5 seconds less than the minimum of 4 seconds.

    • I wish i'd thought of this 8 years ago when i got flashed running a red light at night at an empty intersection. I could have sworn blind the yellow light was far too quick - quicker than i'd seen before - but i just assumed I was wrong because how could the traffic system (profanity) up something that important?

I thought it was way too short, so searched for the duration of the amber light should be. And it turns out, at 40km/h zone, minimum is 4 seconds.

    BPay imo

  • I am in NSW and have successfully appealed a red light offence for my mum maybe 7-9 years ago. I remember doing it and it had a requirement for a 10 year clean driving record listed on the RMS website. The offence was completely waived due to clean driving record. But I just tried to find that link via Google and I am unable to find any info on this. Have things changed in the last 5-10 years?

    • I did it for my Mum a few years back, red light offence, and she got off, she didn't wanna do it, but still did since first traffic fine in 20 years.

  • Should have gone faster when it was yellow. Or stopped like the law says.

lol, exactly, go a bit faster; better to have a speeding fine than go through a red.

LOVE the system, purely revenue-making where you can endanger lives to get a better result LOL

How's it endangering people's lives if it's 0.5 seconds? The other side hasn't turned green yet, so for everyone saying endangering people's lives, that doesn't make sense. NO lives to endanger; it's a different story if it was RED already and the other side GREEN.

    • What if the other side decided to 0.5 seconds before the red ends as well?

      • Does that happen? It's always like 2 seconds before it's green at least.

Plenty of scenarios. Commonly car already in the intersection waiting to turn right or U-turn. They've already in the intersection and therefore have right of way over OP.

    • 0.5 seconds over white line, doesn't include time in the intersection whilst red, just imagine a car approaching at 60kmh light turns green , they will be through intersection as your passing through

    • If you rely this heavily on this sort of timing rather than watching the road, YOU are the danger.

  • dnot pay donot go to court wait for in sper to come take your computer and tv and clam your car

  • how much is the infringement?

you're obviously a special case so I recommend you go to court and contest it

    likely result - they'll add $1000 court costs … ;-)

    enjoy !

Hey OP, a relative of mine lost a leg thanks to someone running a red light.

    Pay it.

      Irrelevant post 🎻

If your relative lost a leg because someone ran a red light by 0.5 seconds, they were committing a traffic infringement themselves.

Are you sure? You seem to be well versed with what you can get away with

You mean you routinely run red lights but were caught by a camera again after about 7 years?

~$450 is a bargain price considering all your other traffic offences that you weren't caught for. Time to celebrate then, eh? 🍻

And oh, do us all a favour and don't drive in our roads again, like ever.

  • This feels like a "Humans of Ozbargain" post.

  • In 2016 was it running a red light?

    • No

  • Can I ask how long after the incident did you receive the infringement notice? I'm expecting one but haven't received it yet.

    • like 25 days from the date of offence

  • +1

you could try objecting in interpretive dance … record and send to the commissioner.

I wish every traffic light had a red light camera.

  • I'm in Vic and have tried and got denied fighting one in the past based on what i considered to be legitimate reasons. You're not gonna get a warning unfortunately. Accept your fate and cough up and move on.
