    HDMI 2.0

    • -6

      And?

      • +3

You need HDMI 2.1 for PlayStation 5

        • -3

          Why?

          • +1

@Jackson: VRR but yeah its really not needed until PS6 or at least a powerful PS5 pro. HDMI 2.1 on PS5 is gimped anyways

            • +1

@Fuzor: Think there about 20 games or so that can do 4K@120 for PS5. Around double for Xbox. Obviously PC gaming too. They updated the PS5 with new firmware.

              • @Whisper Quiet: Really? Is it actual 4k or dynamic? I thought as soon as 120hz came on, it became 1440p. Which you could just cover with HDMI 2.0

                • +1

@Fuzor: Lots of tricks it uses like checkerboard rendering and dynamic resolution. Its still in a 4K container which means you need HDMI 2.1. Other times its proper 4K@120 but you can lose many details in the scenes, like missing objects and background performance. Just depends on the game. PS5 can run many strange resolutions from 1200p, 1660p, 1800p, etc.

    Not 2.1

      • +5

Weird, since they are also selling 2.1 cables but at a higher price.

      • If there isn't, how would you use 2.1 features?

        • +3

It's because they're supposed to be referring to them using the official terms such as Ultra High Speed, Premium High Speed etc

All HDMI cables have exactly the same pinouts. You could plug in a ten year old cable and it would theoretically work as a "2.1" cable. The only difference is whether it's construction quality enables it to pass higher bandwidth signals over it's length or not.

That is why the HDMI forum introduced their certification scheme, so you as a consumer could know that a particular cable had definitively been tested to pass signal X over distance Y. Not rely on misleading BS claims from manufacturers.

The features of the various HDMI versions are all implemented at the source and sink device ends, cables have zero to do with HDMI feature implementation. The cable is either good enough to pass the signal, or it is not.

          • @Astronaut Joe: Sorry I am not a cable guy, does it mean my 10 years old HDMI cables may still get me 4K @120hz if my new TV and output sources are capable of doing so?

          • @Astronaut Joe: If they all have the same pinout, what actually changes? I'd have thought that over short distances copper could handle high data rates losslessly or just not work at all. The middle ground of "works at this many bits per second but not at this many" smells suspicious to me.

  • Tom is that you?

      Yes

That is indeed the OzBargain way

  • Thanks - always looking for more cables around the house

Out of context, can anyone recommend decent multiport dock/charger they are using for their setup?

  • OK, stupid question time: If I use a 2.1 cable from my PC to the TV, and then a 2.0 for the HDMI return channel from my TV to my soundbar for sound, will the PC/TV still run at 2.1?

    • +7

i can definitely tell you that i don't know.

    • +1

HDMI 2.1 isn't wired differently, it's just higher bandwidth / sending more data so it needs the cable to be higher quality. ARC (audio return channel) doesn't need the insane high bandwidth since it's only transmitting audio, so it should work fine.

    • If you are using the soundbar through ARC or EARC, so its basically passing through the video, then No it will not give you 2.1 features. If you are just running audio from TV to soundbar without ARC then it doesn't affect the picture and you will get the 2.1 features. Some soundbars have to use ARC so to get 2.1 you cannot use HDMI at all and only use TV speakers or an optical cord (SPDIF) if theres an option.

  • It's back to $18.99

I wouldn't buy any of the Amazon HDMI 4k/8k cables unless they are certified (where they can be verified via QR). It's important to ignore the marketing words.

You want HDMI 2.1 for Ultra HD content (both 4k and 8k).
