Good Evening OzBargainers,

At Web Catchers we want to give students a fair go. Host your personal blog, website or photo gallery with us and you won't pay a cent on our student plan

These plans are hosted from our servers and network in Sydney, Australia, and provide the following allowances:
500MB of RAID 10 protected disk space
2GB of bandwidth per month
5 email accounts
3 MySQL databases
cPanel and Softaculous one click installers
No ads, no banners, no fuss!

For more information on the plan, head to http://webcatchers.net.au/web-hosting/student/ and hit the Sign Up Now link.

Things you should know:

These plans are for personal, not business use. Student plans are only available to Australian High School, Tafe and University students. You must sign up using a valid .edu.au email address to be eligible.

We hope you enjoy the service. :-)

  • Just made an account. Seems like no strings attached. I hope..

Also, your checkout process does not seem to distinguish between ordinary email addresses with .edu ones. I made one with just a Yahoo account, but changed it to a .EDU one after that.

    • .TAFE aswell ?

      • the website seems to accept any email address, at the moment. Maybe they will check manually to see if you're eligible.

      • Yes tafe email addresses are valid too :)

  • Hi Scrimshaw,

We use the same checkout page for all signups so it will accept any valid email address. If you signup for this service with a non .edu email address we will get you to confirm this once you have placed an order.

  • Cool! Seems like a good deal, but you gotta keep in mind that most people will need to register for a domain name which costs money :/

namecheap will hopefully be offering 0.89c domain name registrations (plus ICANN fee) sometime in the next two days :)

I have an account with these guys and they're great, really helpful during set up - especially for a free plan.
For those wondering about domains, you can use dot tk or co.cc for a free domain.

  • Damnit, i would love to take advantage of this but my university doesnt give us email addresses at all. :(

    • +7

What kind of uni is that? Heck even secondary schools provide emails now.

      • Probably not a tech orientated one. :D

      Hi cheese510,

I have asked about this and we can still offer this to you.
Just signup and send a copy of your student card or letter of enrolment to mail(at)webcatchers.net.au for confirmation.

  • If you don't mind about having Cpanel and your website is targeting people on the other side of the world as well you should look at this site as they have better specs: http://www.000webhost.com/

No way, had a site with these guys once, was horribly slow.

      • Must have been that server, I used them one year ago and they weren't slow then.

  • I'm using this to make a forum for our debating team, so we can discuss ideas. I assume forums are allowed?

    • Well they have Softaculous on there so I assume so. With Softaculous you can do a one click install for phpBB.

    • Machej is correct. Forums are no problem on our servers :)

      • Awesome! Small question though, when I'm adding name servers to my Co.CC domain, I'm getting this error: "'ns1.webcatchers.net.au' is listed on our Block List(#D2)". Is there any reason for this?

        • Hi PowerB,

Thanks for signing up with us.
There shouldn't be any reason why our nameservers are blacklisted and we have been in contact with the support team for .co.cc domains but are yet to resolve this.

In the meantime you can use their dns service and create an A record to our server - 115.146.78.22

If you have any issues you can contact our support team to help set it up.

        • That seemed to work. Thanks for the help :)

        • I'm giving the co.cc a try but I'm not sure what to type in the shopping cart page.
Have entered www.name.co.cc but getting an error:
The domain you entered is not valid. Enter only the part after the www. and include the TLD

        • Don't enter the 'WWW.', only enter 'yourdomain.co.cc'. :)

        • Thx! I had the domain name entered in camel case.

  • I'm a student but I run a small business fixing computers. Can I still use this?

      Hi Jakiejake,

This particular service is designed for students not businesses.
If you get into contact with our sales team they can offer you a discount on a premium hosting plan.

      • Bah, I'll sign up anyway and run my personal website off it

  • Thanks.

  • Where is the sign up page?

  • so is this a website where my friends/families can view?

    • Yes - Your website will be hosted on our servers in Sydney and are publicly accessible.

LMAO! This is some dude reselling hosting, http://who.is/whois/webcatchers.net.au/ http://who.is/whois/name-services.com.au/

    lol, Jumba/AussieHQ reseller plan.

Much better off getting a VentraIP plan.

P.S. Learn to change the default logo for your fly-by-night operation: https://myaccount.webcatchers.net.au

I give it 3-6 months before it goes under.

We have our main domain registered with Jumba, so thanks for pointing that out.
Our cPanel servers are based in the Sydney Equinix Datacentre so not sure where you got the idea we run all our sites on a Jumba reseller plan.

Our ACN is 147 734 478 if you would like to get more clarification about the validity of our company.

Dude ain't selling anything here last I checked, he's doing a service for students. As a former student, this is cool beans. I stuck with a certain provider because they gave me this very same deal when I was in uni, and they're reaping the rewards from my organisation I work at now.

So what if they're reselling. As long as the provide a good service, it is perfectly fine. There is a massive barrier for non-technical users to registering a website. I remember my first time, I was 12 and Geocities was the next best thing. If Webcatchers can assist the users to bridge the gap (which he or she is clearly doing with the direct user response to queries), I say go for it.

  • Why does it ask for $10.95 when you type in a web address? Am I missing something here? Thanks

    • +1

      Hi brenwildman,

When you signup you have the option of registering a domain with us for a fee or using your existing domain name which is free.

If you have an existing domain just select these options and point your domain to the nameservers set out in the welcome email

  • How would I go about making an online portfolio? (e.g resume). Very new to creating websites!

    • Hi faze,

You could use an existing portfolio template to get started, but you will need to know a bit of html to tweak it to your needs.

Another option is to use a wordpress site to display your portfolio. You can easily set this up from your web hosting control panel -> Just look for the Softaculous icon.

  • Awesome, was just about ready to get started on my online portfolio this week. will take advantage of this, thanks :)

  • Hi,

If I would like to get my domain registrar to host my DNS, do I just point my A records to 115.146.78.22? It was pointed up above, just want to know if it applies to all of us.

    Thanks for the generous offer!

    • Hi timting,

If you want to use your domain registar's dns then you point the A record to 115.146.78.22 as you mentioned.
The issue above is for users with .co.cc domains where our name servers are blocked for some reason and these users are currently unable to use our free dns service.

    • Have you been able to get this to work Tim? When I log into cPanel it also says my server IP is 115.146.78.22 ad when I try to load this it has a default CGI page. Do we need somethine else (i.e. http://115.146.78.22/user_name) for this to work correctly? I have added an index.html but cannot access.

  • Hiya can I use this for my portfolio page for my freelance work?

    • Hi Robioz,

I have had this clarified. If are a student and using this as a portfolio/resume site then its no problem.
If you are using this service for freelancing then that would be considered business use.

  • Can you use it for student organisations or charities?

  • Hi Talkingtree,

A requirement of this service is to have a .edu.au or similar email address so unfortunately the free hosting service isn't open to charities at this stage.

However, feel free to jump on our live chat and someone there can give you a more definitive answer about discounts for non-profit organisations.

  • Has the offer expired? When I click 'Order Now', I get the following error : Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /cart.php on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

  • Hi Josh,

The offer is ongoing but you may be having issues because our billing system was upgraded last night.
Can you just try accessing the page from another computer or web browser and it should be working fine.

If you have any further issues just jump on our live chat with the sales team.

  • Registered for this finally last night. Hopefully still valid :)
    Awaiting confirmation.
