Water Dripping from Evaporative Cooling

Hi All,

First wishihng everyone a very happy and prosperous new year. I have noticed water continuiosly coming out of evaporative cooling. The AC was not needed until last 2 days. Last time it was used was last night and has been off since then (off since approx 4am). Should I expect this to stop soon?

Thanks heaps in advance.

  • the system bleeds down the water in the sump constantly. I'm not sure about your model specifically but mine has different attachments on the bleed down with different sized holes that dictate the amount of water that drains

    • ok thanks.

Also the bleed down should ideally not drain to your gutters but to the ground. you'll rust out your guttering twice as fast.

        • good point - should it just stop whenever it wants to? I mean no intervention needed?? I am conscious of call out fees etc especiall during holida period. Thanks again.

@b_sean: if the aircon isn't running it will stop draining when the sump is empty
when you start the aircon again it will start bleeding down again

its to prevent contamination and build up like calcium etc

@dwillia: It's off and still bleed draining 8 hours later?
              Doesn't sound right to me.

Sounds like the fill valve is stuck open for some reason so it's continually filling or overfilling the sump.
(or if your system is old like mine and doesn't have anything automated, then possibly the bleed valve is stuck open)

OP - if you can turn off the water inlet, then do so. This should resolve the issue.
When you next need the cooler, just manually turn the water back on for that time.

They're pretty simple devices. Worth climbing up onto the roof and having a look yourself to see if it can be fixed easily.

@ESEMCE: its very much like a toilet cistern using a float and valve to maintain the sump level - very simple

                • +1

@dwillia: Yes, so if it's still bleeding after 8 hours of no use (per OP turned off at 4am, video filmed at 12:30pm), either the fill valve or dump/bleed valve are faulty.

    • Evaporative cooler relies on ICE so as ice melts it needs to drain to a tank
Check you have the drain tank in place or if its full

Hmmmm. I'm pretty sure if the evaporative unit has not been used in the last 9 hours then it should not be draining still.

    I could be wrong*

    *My wife says I'm wrong

    • if the sump is 20 litres and its set to drain at 10 litres a day then………………

      • +3

That flow rate in the video is a shit load more than 10 litres a day.

        • that was just an example. Without knowing the specific model and how its set up. if could be set to dump rather than bleed

          • @dwillia: My understanding is that it will perform a maintenance dump while the system is active. OP says the unit has been turned off since 4am this morning.

        • Sorry I couldnt see the video - it was blocked by my work

    • If it's not being used then there should be no water flowing. (ie your wife is wrong, feel free to tell her so from me*)

      *
I take no responsibility for fallout following this action

      • She has sent you a PM.

        Good luck.

  • I'll bet a twig up there would slow it down. And a good size stick well that'll be a new story about drying wet carpets after finding a round stick

  • there's a lot of standing water in your gutters. has it got a slope on it?

    • That and the neighbours ungodly satellite dish. There's a lot going on in this video.

      • the battery video below is it more interesting, not sure I believe the result though
        .

        • I've got some goth girl playing Bon Jovi on guitar.

          My algorithm is obviously different
          .

          • @MS Paint: wow, just lost an hour watching stuff I didn't really want to
some were interesting but I'm not sure why I was shown more than half of them
            lots of trump propaganda. wtf?
            .

  • pumps gotta be stuck on, go up and see if you can hear the pump

  • +1

Looks likely the float valve is stuck or failed. They are pretty simple things if you want to try to fix yourselt, but don't stick your hand in the fan while its running or fall off the roof.
Mine has a tap on the side of the house that allows the water to be shut off. If you have the same you could turn off the water until you get someone out to look at it.

  • My evap cooling leaks lot of water when its turned on. There is some kind of valve which needs to be replaced.

  • There is something wrong 100%.
How my system works is it will fill the reservoir and continue to recycle that water until the water sensor shows the reservoir is low.
It will then dump/drain that water. Then refill with fresh water. It will happen every hour or two.
When i switch it off it will dump the water and shut the weather vent after a certain amount of time.

It should not be continually leaking water.

  • I have the same issue. I heard water dripping the downpipe. Grabbed a ladder and water was coming out of the hose connected to my evaporative cooling. I used a 4li bucket and it gets full in 20mins. It's been more than 24hrs since i noticed it and still the same thing happening. I havent used the evaporative cooling for a few days already.
