On sale is this new tablet from Alldocube which is intended to be a more budget option of the iPlay 50. The notable downsides are that the display is HD instead of FHD, the UNISOC T606 CPU is a lower clocked T618 and no Widevine L1 DRM. Despite these downsides the tablet is still a good option for general use, light gaming, ebooks or something like a Home Assistant dashboard.

Featuring Android 12 with Google Play, 10.1" HD 1280x800 IPS display, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage (microSD support), UNISOC T606 Octa-Core CPU, 6000mAh battery with USB-C, 4G LTE with B28, Dual SIM, 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, WiFi ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, 3.5mm audio jack and dual speakers.

The price may be lower depending on your AliExpress member level, for example it's US$83.04 for Diamond members. Coupon limited to 100 redemptions.

I was lucky to pick an Iplay50 during Black Friday 6gb/64gb for $93 us, $137 Australian. I think that is a much better deal with a 2k screen and 6gb, better unisoc, bigger screen. Not sure if that price will come back, but the iplay50 is a much better device as you pointed out op.

    • Introductory price very unlikely to ever be repeated. Hasn't been in any of the latest sales.

      • How do these lesser known Chinese brands compare to Samsung, Lenovo and Xiaomi, @clear?

        • +1

In terms of hardware the specs are often quite good - plenty of RAM, storage, decent CPUs etc. When it comes to the software side you're not going to get Android updates to the next version. Alldocube will release a few firmware updates to fix bugs, but never the next version. The other big downside for some is that you're not going to get Widevine L1 DRM.

Chuwi have managed to get some of their tablets approved for Netflix HD, however their prices are higher and often around the same price as an equivalent Lenovo or a better Xiaomi.

          • @Clear: Excellent, thanks. And I take it, from @davidl2 below, that we can't easily find 3rd party ROM updates laying about the net either, right?

same price as an equivalent Lenovo or a better Xiaomi.

"Better Xiaomi" = better bang for the buck? I've been happy with Xiaomi phones for the last 5 years, so moving to their tablets wouldn't be a stretch (unless it's a stretch for them, as it seems to have been for other phone brands).

            • +1

@wisdomtooth: Yeah 3rd party ROMs are pretty much non-existent. Unfortunately I think the custom ROM community as a whole is much smaller now that Android is mature.

Xiaomi is better bang for the buck. Xiaomi Pad 5 and 5 Pro are really good value, get regular updates and just work. There's a 6 rumoured to be out this year.

    • Do you have a link for 6gb ram version? How much is it now?

        • Thanks Clear. Do we have any voucher works on this tablet?

          • +3

@arctan: Not currently. AliExpress should be releasing their January codes soon and then we should have some cheaper prices.

An iPlay 50 Pro is going to be released sometime this year too. It'll have 8GB RAM and a faster MediaTek Helio G99 CPU. I'm unsure of the price and the exact release date.

            • @Clear: Wow, that’d be cool. Main advantage is better processor and 8gb ram, otherwise they are the same for the rest of the specs.

            • +1

@Clear: the screen on iplay 50 pro isn't really pleasant from some reviews. I might waiting for Xiaomi Pad 6 or see if Lenovo xiaoxin pad got any promotion.

              • +1

@Ozone999: The screen on iplay50 (which is the same as pro) is excellent, but Netflix/Disney etc only play in sd.
YouTube is hd and anything you chuck at it. Let’s remember the price point, I think at that price is a lot of amazing stuff.

              • +1

@Ozone999: I just hope it's better than the screen in my iPlay 40H.

It's a little over a year old, and has ghosting issues now :(
It's kinda like the burn-in we used to get on CRT monitors, but fortunately fades away after a few hours.

And no, rebooting doesn't help, the ghosting persists for a few hours.

I tried to open a Return ages ago on whatever site I bought it from (Banggood?), But never got any response :(

I rolled the dice on the 'bundle 3', cost $A155.92

  • Any tips on a device with this level of value that does do Widevine L1? Even if another $50-$100 more.

  • Thanks OP for posting another budget android tablet deal. I got bundle 2. Not the half size tablet I originally wanted. There is nothing in the shops for this price that compares to these specs including a cover. Cheers!

  • is the ROM has native google play installed? unlike the xiaoxin (another tablet rom) and redmi pad (chinese rom) debacle.

    • Yes it's for the international market. They sell their CN ones at Taobao, Tmall etc.

      • Appreciate the prompt response, I assume it also the same with the iplay 50 as well?

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/alldocube-iplay-50

the price no longer 'cheap' as before but still good value compared to xiaoxin and redmi pad, software considered.

        • Yes. The latest Xiaoxin is for CN market so that'll always be dodgy. Redmi Pad flashed with the official global ROM will work perfectly fine.

          • @Clear: I'm currently stuck in the 7 days waiting period for the Remi Pad. is the flash process straightforward?

this is what the seller told me:
            guide to install global rom:
            1, unlock bootloader https://en.miui.com/unlock/download_en.html
2, download global rom and tool
            https://xiaomirom.com/rom/redmi-pad-yunluo-global-fastboot-r…
            https://xiaomirom.com/en/download-xiaomi-flash-tool-miflash/
3, follow flash steps * Be sure not choose lock option!

The last step, why can't I chose to lock the bootloader after flashing? if unlocked its risky?

I assume the global ROM edition is also locked bootloader?

            • @[Deactivated]: Bootloader needs to be locked for Widevine L1 and to avoid the startup security warnings. Ideally you can ask at the Xiaomi Pad 5 forum at xda-developers. I don't own any Xiaomi devices but they would know.

              https://forum.xda-developers.com/f/xiaomi-mi-pad-5.12427/

              • @Clear: which tablet do you own and recommend? I probably just buy what you have and return the one I bought.

this blacview tab 15 has good spec but poor coverage in ozb?

                https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/blackview-tab-15

              • @Clear: Also this redmi pad "global edition" you posted, it comes with official global ROM? unlike the dodgy xiaxoin rom?

                I heard conflicting comments:
                https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13142197/redir

                • @[Deactivated]: I don't even know anymore since some sellers are later changing their descriptions to say it's not the official ROM or it has an unlocked bootloader. If it's reflashed with the global ROM and the bootloader is locked then it's all fine.

                  • @Clear: yes they did that, they updated description in a flash once someone reported an issue with the rom.

                  • +1

@Clear: should I get iPlay 50 (not the S) when its on sale again, or try flashing Redmi Pad with global rom?

Which tablet is better spec wise?

  • +2

problem with these Chinese tablet is you don't get new Android OS updates…
stucked forever in Android 12 when 14 is out, and some Apps will be outdated (need the device to have Android 14 or new Apps won't work)

if it's a very popular model under xda-developer with all sort of custom ROMS…then I would take the risk!

    • +3

Yeh, you really do get what you pay for.

In my experience, I find most apps still work with older androids.
Like I'm still using a Lenovo P8 with android 6, and the majority of my apps still get regular updates on Play.

Just a tiny handful of apps aren't available coz they demand android 11+ (eg that 7eleven fuel app).

Only other issue is Security updates, if that's something you really care about, then cheap Chinese tabs aren't for you.

      • Only other issue is Security updates, if that's something you really care about…

You don't?? I just upgraded my Redmi Note 7 on great part bc of that!! (and bc it grinded to a halt — planned obsolescence much? — I could've flashed xiaomi.eu, but figured that wouldn't have sorted the security updates issue).

        • +2

Haha …. I know i SHOULD care… and in my younger years I would have cared immensely… plus the fact that I even worked in data security in the past…
But at my age…. I find i care less and less about things…. LoL

Anyhow …. if youre like me and only stick mainstream apps (eg Youtube) … and have Safe habits online …. you ll generally be just fine….

But if you like to mess around with random apps from deep in (or out of) the bowls of the Play store…. or recklessly click/open anything/everything in front of you…. then Yes…. you definitely need to have the very latest security updates etc ….

personally …. i feel its too wasteful to toss a device after 2 yrs… just coz its not getting security updates….
you gotta think of the environment and how much pollution is generated in the process of manufacturing these things….

          • @wildchill: Same here. Yeah, since I wrote that comment, I factory reset the old phone, to basically use it as a media player and remote control, removing the tons of sh!t I had installed, and noticed a SUBSTANTIAL improvement in performance (and haven't even flashed Xiaomi.eu yet!). Maaaaaybe I should've tried that before upgrading 😬

    • if it's a very popular model under xda-developer with all sort of custom ROMS…

      Such as?…
