Best Place to Buy Car Parts for Fixing up a Car

I know nothing about cars but have a friend who does a lot with cars so I am slowly getting into learning about it.

I am just asking about what are the best places to buy car parts mainly atm basically whats the ozb way of fixing up your car lol or sourcing parts.

I am assuming it is like PC parts and you can either buy officially from the manufacturer for close to rrp or try get a bargain from ebay and classifieds or facebook marketplace etc just wondering where the specials and deals are for car parts.

where do you guys mostly buy stuff to repair or do up your car that someone just learning about this for the first time might not know about.

Sorry my specialty is computing stuff so if you want to use pc analogies go for it.

Just not sure how to tell what is trustworthy or not or what the go to ozb approved practices are.

thank you

No answers, but it might depend on the car. Scrounging around for 1930's car parts is different than for a 90's Corolla.
    What is it?
    .

    • i think one is a 1999 falcon sedan

the other might be a 94 wagon but i think also ford falcon

      • Showcar - rare spares.

Runabout or weekend cruiser- wreckers, and per above by @Wiadro
        .

        • ah yes wreckers I forgot the places where cars mostly go would maybe have that kind of stuff I guess you have to ring ahead as they wouldnt really keep a running catalog or inventory or would they like pc part repair stores and places

@AlienC: Many wreckers nowdays work on the "bring your own tools and look around the yard yourself" arrangement. They won't/can't tell you what's "in stock".

Depends what you want and also what brand you are buying for.

Super cheap, auto one, repco for consumables like filters and oil. Buy them when on sale in prep for the next service.

Other parts you just have to search for the best price you can find at the time. Different suppliers will be better for different parts. Wreckers can be a good source, but hit and miss on availability.

  • Depends what you classify as 'car parts' for 'fixing up'.

Oil,filters, spark plus and brake pads is going to be completely different source than engine rebuild components, body panels or replacement interior fittings.

    • I am trying to learn as much about everything but the recent history was stuff like headlight panel and some body panels and I think drivers side window power motor

  • ebay, etc but if you want it "today" bursons are not tooooo bad.

    • cool thanks see i did not even know they existed i thought it was a made up word cheers thanks

  • Sometimes easier to find a good mechanic. They have trade prices for parts and can be less hassle. Because you can have hassles when you start eg. working with old bolts or accidentally damaging stuff.

If you are cool with "tuition" costs, getting a manual and obd scanner is a good start. library may even have those manuals. ebay and aliexpress can be good sources. Some sellers on eBay sell combos of parts. Still check locally as you can get occasional deals and quality can be better.

I get the feeling that he is not an ozbargaine with the purchases he has made that's why I'm here at the brains trust.

  • Ebay has worked well for me - air intake, wheel bearing set, window actuator. Aus and US sellers.

Installed by local mechanic and YouTube.

It's good to know if there is an international version of your car, ie Mitsu 380 and Galant.
