Which Blender Should I Buy?

I want to buy a blender to help assist me with my weight gain plan. I'm considering the following blenders:

Nutribullet 900W Blender Megapack Black NB9-1107AK - $95.20

Philips 5000 Series Blender with Tumbler in Black - $99

I like the compactness of the Nutribullet but Philips is a good brand and has a 1000W motor. If anyone can provide me a recommendation out of the two or suggest a different blender within my budget, that would be appreciated. A key consideration is how easy it would be to clean (without a dishwasher).

My budget is $100 although I could stretch it if needed.

Thank you

Only $100 each, buy both 😉

Go the phillips - it specifically says it can crush ice. Only the higher end NutriBullet say they can.

    • Yeah although this YouTube has a comment from Goran Bolf that says the instructions say never use ice cubes although the Myer reviews say that it has "Amazing ice crushing functionality" so I'm not sure.

      • Some of the other reviews say it doesn’t cope too well with ice, so it could be about the cubes used too. But if you plan to do ice, especially for things like crushed ice for cocktails or other drinks, I’d be picking one that specifically says it can work for ice.

Can you stretch your budget to $194.20 and get both.

    • What a champion, that's a good idea. Possibly unrelated, do you think you could spare $94.20?

Get the Philips, more power plus the Types of jugs they have are way more versatile, especially if you ever want to blend soup.

The 100watts is negligible but I’d rather take the additional power and live with the trade off of being harder to clean. In my experiences dishwashers and big blenders aren’t good friends anyway, I can never get it properly cleaned in a dishwasher because I can’t put the jug in properly.

With food processors and blenders, you think you have enough power until you use something with more power. I have a 1000-1200watt Breville is some description. Really happy with it until i recently used a Froothie Optimum with about double the power. Mine feels like crap now (and they have a half price sale which is very, very tempting)

I do agree that getting more power is a good idea. With regards to the Froothie Optimum, what could it do that your Breville couldn't and would you use the extra functionality every day or is it very niche? Also, do you have a link to the half price sale and the specific blender you are referring to? Thanks

I assume he means this one. I have the next model up from this. It's amazing. It's so powerful (I hate "bits" in my smoothies so a ninja etc would never cut it for me). It's super easy to clean too - I just run it again with a bit of soap and water inside and then rinse. I've had mine at least 5 years and hope it lasts forever given the quality. From memory, I chose this one as its more affordable than a Blendtec (which is what they use at Boost Juice)

        • Thanks. This is the one I was referring to and I got my thing at half price wrong. For some reason I thought it was $600

As above. It’s a lot better using A more powerful to blend. Does the job more efficiently. If you’re doing particular types of fruit this one will do it better and a hell of a lot faster

When you say 'weight gain plan' — what does that look like/what are you using the blender for?

Have had a few nutribullets — they always die. Either the bearing seal (maybe wrong name?) or the rubber blade clutch breaks.
Not sure about the models that you've linked to, but I'd look at recent reviews to see if either suffer from the same issues.

If you can find a way to increase your budget I'd go for a higher model for durability and ease of use. One way of thinking is "this $100 blender might last 1-2 years [and then landfill], but a $300 blender could last 5-10 years and be a whole lot more enjoyable to use"

For example, we have a Magimix blender which IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. It's glass, it's heavy and it's more expensive than the ones you're currently looking at. But it's been absolutely amazing to use from milkshakes to soups, sauces, ice, milling spices etc. etc. and we get a lot of use out of it. It's very easy to clean because it comes apart completely. We've had it for 2.5 years and it's probably going to last at least another 5-8 years more (with easy to obtain spare parts etc.)

Anyway, not trying to sell you on that but just saying don't rule out other blenders based on price alone.

I'm underweight and I want to lower the barrier to eating. I've heard that drinking most of your calories can help with weight gain so I figured if I buy a blender then I can blend foods and the such to help me gain weight. I'd also use it for mixing up protein powder or mass gainer especially as protein powder in a shaker with milk can be difficult to mix thoroughly (due to the milk). If you have any info on gaining weight, I'd be interested.

I've also read from reviews that they can leak.

The Magimix blender has the same wattage as the Philips. Do you think the performance would be comparable?

  • A glass jar blender is nice to have. NutriBullet is nice too because the blades and cups are readily available anywhere.

    • Is glass better for harder stuff? Do you know what price point glass jar blenders start at?

      • The one you linked to says it is made of glass, unless I read the description wrong.

        • Thanks - I missed that. The photos do make it look like it's made of glass.

  • Ive had a nutri ninja for many years and its lasted well..crushes ice with ease. They are around $140 if I'm not mistaken

Unsure when it'll be back in stock - but this Kogan blender I got for $55 is absolutely as good as my 1200W Nutribullet that I replaced it with

  • I'd take the Nutribullet. For me, it's all about the convenience and the compactness. I tried all sorts of juicers and blenders - cleaning and storage is always an issue. Only those cup/bottle blenders made a sustainable difference and I still use my little Ninja appliance after 7 years.

  • Check CHOICE recommendation.

  • I just bought this one. It has both the ice crushing big blender and the 710ml cup and lid. I just used the small cup yesterday on frozen mango and ice and it came out super smooth

Edit: it was on sale for $180 a little while ago.
I used a work purchase portal so it was closer to $150 at the good guys. Do you have anything like that at your work, I always forgot about them until recently

  • If you just want to blend mass gainer I would get this for $22: https://www.kmart.com.au/product/600ml-drink-bottle-blender-…
I have a the previous model and it's great. No issues for the year I've used it for blending mass gainer.
Quick and easy cleanup as you drink from the bottle. Albeit I don't think it can handle ice.
