Amazon Sent Me The Wrong/Inferior SSD

I bought a Crucial P5 Plus 2TB SSD from this deal

This was along with a bookmark to get that 6% discount. Both items arrived separately today and yesterday, even though ETA was early Jan. The SSD I got was a P3 500GB. I'm trying to navigate Amazon's returns, and the only option I see is to request a refund.

I don't want a refund, I want the correct item. What's the right process here?

Talk to Ozb then talk to someone in Amazon chat.

Why would you go to the official source when you can post on ozbargain that practically says “I’ve done next to nothing and I’m all out of ideas”?

Ozb is our personal decision maker 😉

Go here, click the order, click 'problem with order', click 'received wrong item', click 'I need more help' to start the live chat.

Or you can go directly to live chat via this link https://www.amazon.com.au/message-us, you will just need to tell them the order number and details.

    • Thanks for the detailed instructions. The fact I have to message a live person isn't clear in the app or the website. I'll try it later this afternoon.

    • Just finished chatting. I was allowed to reorder the original item at a higher price and they will refund me the difference once I receive the order. I will have to also send the 500GB SSD back and they will give me a full refund for that purchase. I was given a return label. Thankfully I was connected to a good agent. Initially they were only offering me the refund, but I pushed for the replacement. They gave me a "one time exception". I don't see how Amazon can just send us the wrong item when we purchased it during a limited promotion, and say bad luck here's a refund.

Yeah that can happen, you have to push them sometimes to get a fair outcome. It is my belief/understanding that they should simply send the item that you have paid for, if asking you to return the incorrect item. If they are unable or unwilling to do that, then they would need to issue a refund without return, as you have received something you haven't ordered or paid for.

  • Since it’s an Amazon US product they’re unlikely to offer a replacement for you. They’ll offer a return-and-refund which is all you’re entitled to. You can ask nicely for some credits but that’d be up to the rep.

  • 2TB and 500 GB is clearly a big difference, not sure but someone working may have messed up badly here (may be by accident, who knows)

    • It's also a different model they sent, P3 vs P5

At least it’s still a hardddrive. I ordered a weather vane for my dads boat and received gloves…

        • Ha ha, I ordered an air compressor and received a multimeter. Seller apologised and sent the compressor, told me I can keep the multimeter. Winner!

        • No it's not… it's an SSD

Amazon online chat service has gone downhill in the last six months or so. Prepare to speak to no fewer than six different people, sit through the inevitable "Please wait a moment while I review the chat history", and then get "Why do you keep calling us? You are making this difficult."

I'd be pretty surprised if they let you keep the original - they're more likely to ask you to put it back in its original packaging and let their courier collect (they'll ask you to return it yourself first though - ie they pay for it but you have to take it to the PO). Hold out for them to collect.

  • I had the same issue but with an item that broke the very first time I tried to use it. They offered refund for the item.and return shipping up to $24. Then I contwxted the manufacturer instead and they gave me a 50% off code to reorder and then after it shipped they refunded the remaining 50% plus shipping and no requirement to return the original item. In the past I've also had Amazon US waive the requirement to return the original item. It's pretty annoying that the replacement option is only available for items sold and fulfilled by Amazon AU.

  • I ordered a set of 6 Duralex glasses for about $12 from Amazon AU.
They were badly packed, and one had shattered. I went through chat within 5 minutes of delivery. They refused a return because of broken glass, and offered a pro-rata refund on the broken one as, like the OP, “a one-off exception”. I particularly wanted a set of 6, but decided it’s just easier to find one in an op-shop. I think the ‘one off exception’ thing is silly, especially in the OP’s case where something has clearly gone wrong. It seems the agents make their own decisions and the result depends on who you get.

  • So an update. Just received my reordered SSD and they sent me the wrong model AGAIN!! They got closer this time, I was sent a Crucial P5 2TB instead of the Crucial P5 Plus 2TB. Slower in read/write speeds and I think maybe it's an older model? Can't find many retailers stocking it. There was a sneaky sticker with some random barcode over the original seal where it shows the model number. Had to peel it back to check it.

Anyway, back to the chat I go.
