Help Choosing RAM to Upgrade

Hi, i bought this 2 years ago https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/584484 and would like to upgrade the RAM. Happy to take out the existing RAM if someone can recommend a RAM to get. Budget of $200 and would like at least 32gb

  • Uhh

Hard to recommend something when we don't know how much you need/want

    4GB of RAM? 8GB? 256GB?

  • would like 32gb or higher. My budget is $200

  • Might be best to pull the existing RAM and tell us what it is. Then we can help you better. Dell used to have a trick of using non standard parts. Not sure if they still do that.

Software called CPU-Z might identify identify the memory without pulling it out. https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

  • Dells can be painful to upgrade/match RAM on….

  • +1

    JFGI.

    32GB here:
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Crucial-CT32G4DFD8266-1x32GB-2666M…

Have a look inside your PC. Most likely you have 2 slots occupied with 16GB and two free?

Adding 32 will give you 48GB total, which is probably a lot more than you'll use. Maybe just get 16GB.
Why do you want to upgrade? Is it swapping excessively?

  • Ran CPU-Z, Shows this

    • Bog-standard DDR4. Just get another 16 or 32 to add. 1 or 2 sticks, single or dual rank, doesn't matter.

Why do you think more RAM will benefit you, may i ask?

      • I want to upgrade as my pc seem sluggish. i already did a factory reset and removed all dell bloatware but still seems slow.
        Will this be enough https://www.amazon.com.au/Crucial-CT32G4DFD8266-1x32GB-2666M…?

        • It shouldn't feel sluggish with 16GB. Is all your software running from SSD?

Sounds like a Windows problem. Background updates running? How does it feel with internet disconnected?

Isn't that the same DDR4 stick I linked above? The single-rank version may be slightly better.

          • @bargaino: Yea its the link you mentioned above. Whats the difference between your link and say for example
            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/747601

Windows in installed on the SSD. Nothing running out of the ordinary with or without internet. i used Advast AV and nothing is draining the resources.

  • I always just use Crucial Advisor to get the required spec's for any RAM upgrades - yours appears to be DDR4-3200 or -2666 1.2V UDIMMs

    • thanks. is there a preference of buying 2x16gb ram or 1x 32 gb ram as i have 2 free slots

      • Apart from 2x16GB likely being cheaper than 1x32GB and any benefits from running dual channel (if any), then not that I know of - but I'm far from a hardware enthusiast.
