Changing Rego from 12 to 6 Months

Hello all,

My rego is always due at a really annoying time of the year, 31st of December. And I'm wanting to change it to 6 months for 1 cycle then back to 12 so the time the bills drop is in June and not December.

I'm finding it hard to do online…

Any assistance is appreciated

  • You may need to go into service NSW?

  • If you renew for 6 months now.. your second instalment will be due on 6/2023, then back to 31/12. Registration date still remains the same.

Renew your CTP for 6 months only and you should have the option…too late if you already have CTP
    .

    • I haven't renewed CTP yet. My thought was to in 6 months time then renew for 12 months and keep it on that cycle.

        My thought was to…

In 6 months time you'll only have the 6 month option. Only way to change registration date is to let it lapse..blue slip and re register.

Pretty sure you can pay as early as October… hassle free compromise?

        • Is anyone ever that organised? haha

Not true (NSW). Have done this myself to get two cars rego away from the Christmas period.

          • @Euphemistic: Literally just done this in NSW. 12 months option was there but couldn't select it.

@randomusername2017: Could this be due to age of car?
After a certain age, it needs to have a pink slip done at least annually. Meaning u couldn't do 12 months because your pink slip would be due in 6

Maybe if OP had a new car, it might be ok

              • @SmiTTy: New car ….guessing it's because I only renewed CTP for 6 months ☺️

                • @randomusername2017: Yes. Need to match the CTP to what rego length you want.

                • @randomusername2017: That’s exactly why.

You can only renew rego based on the length of your CTP.

It’s perfectly ok to renew now for 6 months, then in 6 months time, renew for 12 months.

I did it myself a few years back.

                  • @Extreme: Yep my bad..forgot about the CTP .

Although your Rego still rolls over on the same date, you're just prepaying 6 months into the new cycle.

              • @SmiTTy: I’ve done it twice with cars requiring pink slip. May need to get a pink slip again at 6months. I don’t recall wether I needed the pink slip or not at the 6month interval.

                • @Euphemistic: Pink slip is valid for 12 months, irrespective of the rego period. So if you pay every 6 months for rego, you'll only be prompted for pink slip every 2nd renewal.

You need to renew your CTP for 6 months and then when you renew your rego select the 6 month option. Call the CTP company and pay for 6 months CTP over the phone. Only a dealer can get 3 months rego. If you get stuck then go into a service NSW office.

Your comprehensive insurance does not need to be aligned to the rego renewal, so you may want to change this as well. I changed it to monthly for 3 months and then yearly so that it also moved away from Chrissy and was also not at the same time as when the rego was due.

It sounds easier just to get a job paying $200k pa then cash flow becomes less of an issue.

      It really does hahah

      I know we're recession bound..but that's a pretty savage pay cut ….

  • You can’t avoid 31st december, even you pay six monthly. It is kinda the car’s birthday which links to future pink slip check dates etc.

You can adjust comprehensive insurance policy dates however

  • If op only pay on 3 Jan, will rego starts on 3 Jan or still 31 Dec?

    • +1

      December 31

      • Thanks. In that case it's really no matter if op pays earlier. If he needs notification op can remind him/herself with calendar.

I live in ACT. My rego became due in November when I was holidays so I let it pass and paid when I got back to Australia in December. Got 12 months from that new date. In ACT, we get 6 months to defer payment before needing to put it over the pits again

In act you don’t need a pink slip too!

Still not a good enough reason to move to Canberra

When renewing rego in NSW you should have option of 6 or 12 months. Make sure your CTP aligns with your choice before the rego is renewed.

I have done this online for 2 cars. Both due in January, went and got my pink slip, paid for 6 month CTP, registered for 6 months. Then in July registered them for 12 months. Can’t remember wether they needed pink slip again that first July, but t was easy to revert to 12months in July.

Probably going to do my new car for 6 months when it is due for an inspection so I don’t need to do that in January.

    • I'm in NSW and this seems to be the case! I'm getting some new tyres and rego check and will report back

      • Cashflow was part of my reason for changing, the other part of the reason was to not have to worry about getting an inspection etc sorted while in summer holiday mode.

        • So many places are closed and I'm not organised enough to do it before Christmas haha.

Called Insurer and changed to 6 months, she said I can call them in 6 months and change back to 12.

  • Sometimes OP, you really do need to ask the Department in Charge how to do such things that THEY control. Not us.
But please come back and advise us with what you learn.

If you are in VIC, it’s just done via the VicRoads portal. I’ve done it in the past easily.

I’m guessing the OP wants to renew for 6 months now and then in June renew for 12 months making it due in June every year rather than December.

It sounds like it’s all different in other states.

    • I'm in NSW and this is correct, the timing in December is just a shocker from a cashflow point. I'm getting some new tyres and rego check and will report back.

  • In Qld we get the option of paying every three months. Is that not a thing anywhere else? If you could do a 1/4 instalment, then back to annual, that's mix things up.
