Have Passport Renewal Requirements Changed?

Long story short, it has been a long time since covid and I did not realise my passport had expired sometime last year.

Apparently there was a requirement for expiry less than 3 years in the past. This requirement seems to have been dropped according to what I can see online. Can someone confirm this is true, or does that three year rule still apply?

Old Rules from Archive.org

Hoping to fly out to Taiwan sometime next year.

The official passports website doesn’t mention expiry in their renewal conditions, so I would give it a go.

Apply through the online portal, and come back to us with your outcome.

For a renewal, you will need a passport that:

    • was issued when you were aged 16 or older
    • was issued on or after 1 January 2006
    • had, when it was issued, at least two years’ validity
    • has your current name, date of birth, place of birth and gender, and
    • has not been reported lost, stolen, or cancelled.

If you can answer yes to all the above, you can renew your passport using our online portal

    • Sounds like in most cases you can use passports that are up to 16 years old then

      • You can’t use expired passports, but you can renew them if they were issued after, 1/1/06.
Older expired passports you would have to apply for a passport which is different to a renewal.
I don’t understand OPs question? If OPs passport expired last year they can apply for a passport renewal no problem.
I wouldn’t wait just apply for a renewal now and then you have it in case of an emergency.

  • the form I filled in for my dad last month didn't say anything about a passport needing to be recently expired. It just said you can renew as long as you still hold the previous passport hard copy in person (not stolen, not reported lost, no photocopies)
