I know it sounds petty, but can you please make them separate posts in the future? Combining them screws with reminders and makes the second freebie easier to miss

    • Edit the reminder after you receive it for the first game?

    • Yes this would be great. Or else just have one thread and add to it

      • +2

No reason why anyone (dealbot or otherwise) can't post both deals at the same time?

    • +13

I wish theyd do that too but they wont in case someone else posts the deal first

      • +11

Spot on Dark, there was a rule last year on Ozb stopping this where you could only post on the day the freebie was available.

        • +3

That would be so much better. Would keep the deal fresh on the timeline in that case

          • +6

@Darkvolcos: What's better is posting a deal once it's confirmed. This prevents making incorrect guesses that later turn out to be different games.

            • @[Deactivated]: Just be direct, my apologies if mixing up which Metro it was affected you.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: I saw that one that youre referring to but id prefer an incorrect deal that gets removed after a few hours than the correct freebie being pushed down a few days in the list of deals because it was doubled up with the freebie that preceeded it. The latter is much more inconvenient.

              • @Darkvolcos: You saw one of the ones I was referring to. There have been others previous and since. Some are incorrect guesses, some trolls, and some are when Epic changes things. Changes are unavoidable. The others should be removed immediately.

                • @[Deactivated]: What are you arguing at this point lol. I agree they should be removed but im saying theyre way less annoying than doubling up in one post

        • +2

there was a rule last year on Ozb stopping this where you could only post on the day the freebie was available.

          Terrible idea.

People would miss the deal and complain why the deal couldn't be posted when it was announced.

Also, posting early lets people know of an upcoming freebie and saves them from buying it in the run up.

I could be wrong but I think the reason why the rule was abandoned was because multiple people were just waiting until 12:00am +0.1sec to post the deal.

          • +1

@brotherfranciz: People will miss the deal regardless.

Post early, people dont see it in their new deals.

Post late, people dont see it in their popular deals till later in the day.

            Can't please everybody.

I don’t understand the hate on epic. steam never give away anything good also their sales are reluctant and still overpriced

    • +2

I've gotten plenty of free games on Steam, as well as Steam credit to spend on anything. Then there's the key resellers and the launcher actually works.

There are multiple reasons people don't like Epic. There's the China/privacy/exclusivity deals. Then there's the fact the launcher is a steaming pile of shit. It takes forever to load, and lacks basic features.

      • +10

It's just as fast to startup for me on my potato 6700K.
And the basic feature that I only care about is playing the game.

Also can you name me 3 modern big title AAA games that steam has given away in the last 5 years? Specifically games that haven't gone F2P.

        • +1

Why would there be any expectation for a successful store to give away free AAA games? Epic are not doing it because they want to, they want new eyes on their store and this is their best bet.

Steam users increase every year due to the features and services they bring

          • +2

@s4sep: Not expecting steam to give away, just telling they are all for profit, and reluctant on sales, launch prices are overpriced. Who cares about epics motivation? They give away legit free big games that end up in users library. I have only 3 games on steam, only hollow knight was purchased through steam when it was $6. The other two are from steam key, purchased on a different site. Steam has better launcher, but it doesn’t matter when a game starts.

        • Three of the biggest free games I have on Steam are For Honor, Tomb Raider and Warhammer 40k: Space Marine. There are many more super cheap games that I could choose for myself that I would actually play, if I was so inclined to pay for games.

The issue with the Epic launcher is not related to CPU usage. It doesn't use any resources. It just takes forever to load if you have a lot of games in your library. It is faster to install Epic games from the GOG launcher.

Epic doesn't even let you message people on your friends list. It doesn't support controllers. If I want to use my controller with Fall Guys, I have to run the Epic launcher from Steam, and run x360ce, just to get it to work. Meanwhile Steam has inbuilt controller support, and does not require emulators, and detects the controller as a PS controller.

Many Epic achievements don't work either, but those are largely irrelevant. Many MP games don't work on Epic in MP mode because Epic is trash.

So sure, if you consider that working, great. I'd rather use anything else. I don't understand the weird fanboyism. If you want free stuff, just pirate it.

          • +3

@[Deactivated]: Those mentioned free games on Steam is you being intellectually dishonest. Steam free games pail in comparison to EPIC:

            1) For Honor 'Starter Edition' was free, but the ploy was to have players unlock more. Play count went from avg. 4-5k per month to 218k that one month only dropping back to 5k.

            2) Tomb Raider 'and the Temple of Osiris' was free Mar-2020 and isn't part of the regular Tomb Raider series with this being a puzzle game. The avg. rating on Steam is low at 6/10 and I'd argue it was a 'gift' from Square Enix during COVIID than a true Steam freebie. In contrast, EPIC provided the entire Tomb Raider tribology for free Dec-2021, an actual AAA game.

            3) Can't find much info on Warhammer 40k. I note that Humble were also giving it away for free AUG-2018.

Agreed that EPIC loader does take a long time. Also I dislike how popups shoot to the side of my screen when playing a game. Fair.

Noted the controller argument could be a real one. I've never had issues using my (cheap) controllers on EPIC but understand it's case-by-case.

Achievements, meh personally. Do I really want to showcase to the world that I'm the top 1% on a video game… same as BonkerBoi38 or SmokeToD1e69.

Pirate arguement plays with ethics, and not always possible for multiplayer games.

            • +1

@DrSwag: Steam doesn't give away free games, but there are plenty of other ways to get them free. There's also Ark free on Steam, which was also free on Epic, and a Hitman game. The Tomb Raider game I mentioned is called Tomb Raider. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/525493 Temple of Osiris was also free, but is a different game. There are MANY 40k games. The one I mentioned was Space Marine. Space Marine is the very first free game I ever collected.

The only reason I even mentioned the free games is they asked. I genuinely don't care about free games I'm not going to play. It's fun to collect them, but their value is virtually zero if you don't want to play them.

Some games on Epic support controllers natively. Games like Axiom Verge for example have no problem with any controller, and will let you play with PS button prompts. Games that don't support controllers natively rely on the client, or some other software like an emulator. Fall Guys worked just fine on Steam, but of course Epic won't let F2P play it on Steam, so I have to go with this ridiculous work around to play it with my PS controller.

If Epic simply made their launcher work properly, people might actually want to use it, instead of relying on removing games from other platforms, exclusivity deals, and attempting to bribe people.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: So… do you have a epic account to claim those freebies? Or you despise it that much you refuse to?

                • @Rifulreinhardt: I don't despise them. I have all the freebies except one, it was only available for 24rs and I didn't have internet access that day.

I also quite enjoy playing Fall Guys. I have played a few others, but most I had already played anyway, so never bothered.

I just want the launcher to not be terrible.

You can't play online with pirated games.

            • @Autonomic: You can't play online with some Epic games either, like For the King, at least initially. I didn't bother seeing if they eventually fixed it or not.

The 6700k is not a potato lmao. Combined with the right motherboard you will gain excellent features combined with seriously nice performance and very decent energy consumption levels. If you opt to upgrade it can be a viable alternative. It all remains relative though. If you would like features such as USB 3.1, more SATA3 ports, better audio, better NICs or AC WIFI, that's where Skylake with a Z170 motherboard can make a lot of sense. The fact remains that this platform is maybe 20% faster overall opposed to the previous generation processors and platforms. Now 20% is quite a lot, but not life changing alright. For the performance and enthusiast end-users, I'd still like to hint at you to consider Haswell-E with at least 6 CPU cores. The Core i7 6700K is a terrific 14nm desktop CPU with improved instruction sets, better performance, DDR4 compatibility and decent overclocking headroom. I have no doubt that some of you can reach 5 GHz on this CPU.

Steam has better launcher, but prices are jokes including sales, the freebies you listed are also jokes leftovers. Not saying steam has to give away, just telling you they are reluctant and all for profit. Also can use vpn on epic, harder on steam. Don’t bring up pirates.

    • +3

Absolutely. We NEED TO SUPPORT EPIC. It will be like AMD and nvidia all over again. EPIC supports and pays developers better than Steam. They also give many free games. If we dont buy anything from them and keep expecting free games, they will go on a loss and shutdown.

I just purchased A plagues tale from EPIC even tho I always preferred all the games to be under steam - easy that way. EPIC also gave 25% extra discount over steam, so all good :)

      • I got A Plagues Tale on EPIC recently for free, my library on EPIC has almost 300 games and at least 100 or so of them are top tier games, how is this good for a developer when their games are given away for free. Steam at least has a community and that costs money to maintain, EPIC is maintained on the backs of kids playing Fortnite which is shady as F!

        • How did you get Plgues Tale for free? Did they give away the latest game? If so I missed it damn.

Anyways, from what I understand for every free game epic gives away to a customer, the game developer gets some money. Its very less tho, but then more people opt the free game and that breaks even for the devs - or probably not depending on games I read long ago.

EPIC does have a slightly higher margin for devs thats why few games became epic exclusive. Like Metro exodus and other games. EPIC launcher is till crap. But I prefer there be competition. More sales that way. Its not just with computer gaming industry, but as you know with every industry.

I didnt collect all free epic games, just the one I thought I will play instead of cluttering it will all the crap they give for free(you cant remove games once they are in library). I believe now I have as many games on EPIC as much as steam (but more quality ones on steam as I paid for all steam games). Now i anyway dont get the feeling that everything is under steam anyway and buy games on EPIC too.

        • You realise that Epic pays the devs/publishers (and they choose to be part of it) when it gives these giveaways, right? All the platforms do. Think of it like a mass "sale", but it's at the expense of the platform, not us the customers. It may not be as lucrative as when normal customers buy it, but look carefully at most of these offerings: a lot have been on the market a while and aren't exactly pulling the numbers it used to any more. Furthermore, quite a few are base game offerings and this encourages customers on Epic to purchase the DLCs - which aren't quite as often sold at a discount and sometimes cost more than the base game does when on sale.

If the games being given free were bad for business then devs & publishers wouldn't get involved at all Simple.

Steam doesn't have to give stuff away because it has a rock-solid position in the minds of its loyal customers. It can afford to have lack-lustre sales prices and not-many giveaways because it has the sales numbers and rakes in the dough anyway.

    • Steam has nothing to do with the sales. That's all up to the publisher to set their prices.

    • For me it's because the launcher sucks compared to steam

Severed Steel is a lot of fun.

    • +34

Finally a comment about the games themselves instead of complaints and arguing.

    • Yes it is! Happy everyone gets the chance to play it.

  • +9

What happened to your comment saying it was AC Origins? No longer the case?

  • +3

Mortal shell is a pretty good game. Similar to the Soulsbourne games but in a smaller package.

  • +4

Severed Steel Artbook is also free.

  • +7

Mortal Shell also has a free DLC - Mortal Shell: Rotting Christ Pack.

  • Interesting. Getting a lot of Souls vibes from Mortal Shell.

  • Nooooooooo I missed Severed Steel :(
