Is it just me or these guys are the worst when it comes to shipping stuff on time? My order from November still haven't shipped and they delayed twice already

    • +7

There's a lot of speculation that Sparesbox has moved to a drop shipping style of operation. But yes - as of late, all of my orders have been delayed/cancelled (x3 in the past month). Plenty of feedback from other consumers stating delays and cancellation with minimal to no-contact.

      • Yes it is a drop shipping 100% absolute krook company of Genuine Spare Parts who also owns Repco.

        • +1

I have a buddy that works at Sparesbox and its not drop shipping. The business is like 50/50 just intime and on shelf. No drop shipping.

They tell me that they used to be much better too and the team they work with are really passionate but they just have a really bad software engineering team. They just keep creating shthouse software and the staff have to work around it. Apparently nothin works and there is constant problems that the staff have to solve themselves. Somtimes they have to fix every order one by one. I don't envy their staff. Shthouse way to do it.

When they were a smaller business the staff could get it done in spite of the bad software. Then they got bought by Genuine Spare Parts and they got bigger. Too big for those staff to fix all the issues all the time. In my experience these development or software engineering leaders get away with damn near anything. Underperformance is really common and they sink businesses.

          • @TheCrooked: If software developer or website developer is the culprit here, then why the management don’t do anything about it? It’s easier to scapegoat, that’s all I wanna say. End of the day, the management is to blame not a software developer.

            • +3

@Tomaus62: 'TheCrooked' you have replied to had signed up today and is from QLD (home of krook Sparebox) on OB and his/her first post. What a nice compatible user name that 'TheCrooked' had signed up just to reply comments. Gees.

              • @[Deactivated]: Sparebox started in Sydney. They had an warehouse in Melbourne too. I think that one closed
I did sign up just to leave comments. I dont understand why that is a bad thing. Never had notin else to say here b4

              • @[Deactivated]: Nice detective work there mate :)

            • @Tomaus62: I dont think they were blamming the developer. I think they were havin a go at the leadership

              • @TheCrooked: E-commerce hasn’t been invented yesterday! and it’s not that hard to build an e-commerce platform, so it’s a lame excuse for poor service. Fire the management, mother of all solutions

          • @TheCrooked: What do expect from Indian coders getting paid $25/hr ????

        • I just leave the reviews Lol :) Their european car parts is drop shipping on leading krook host fleabay. https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/spares-box

          • @[Deactivated]: My last few purchases engine oil was dropped shipped as well. I think their business model has changed.

    • +4

I refuse to deal with sparesbox for this reason. They used to be ok then I believe they were bought out but I could be wrong. Supercheap, and others, happily price match sparesbox if you ask nicely. You can have what you want in an hour that way (rather than 6 months).

      • +1

I got some carwash from them recently and i got it in a week.
Maybe some items are on shelf others dropship?

    • +2

Stopped buying from them after two orders were placed and no word from them. Had to chase up them up and apparently there was no stock.

    • +1

Came here to say the same.

Sparesbox are well priced, but they suck at shipping. They take forever to ship and then use CouriersPlease who have difficulty with delivering at the best of times. Sparesbox usually don't allow delivery to PO Boxes and don't follow eBay's click and collect process correctly, so a click and collect order usually doesn't show up.

    • +3

My last order ($2k in DBA brakes, rotors and some clutch parts during Black Friday) took around 3 weeks, which I didn't mind since the prices were great and they weren't parts I needed immediately.

If there's anything I need straight away, I'd rather pay extra at Repco, Supercheap or Autobarn.

    • They cancelled my order of gear oil a whole month after I ordered and waited for it. Worst service!

    • I bought suspension last March. It arrived in May after I sent a few follow-up emails… and arrived again last month with absolutely no paperwork attached.

  • +3

Dexos oil (Dexos 1G2) is formulated for GM vehicles based on specs that are provided by GM. It's an older spec, so I wouldn't recommend sticking it in a newer car (Euro 5/6) as some sensors are stupidly sensitive.

You can use supercheaps vehicle-specific search to find the oil that is right for your vehicle (Older cars you have some flexiblitiy).

      • +8

Is it even possible to go below zero??

    • +3

Be careful with those parts stores search engines - they are often completely wrong, especially with oil. Best to check the owners manual for correct specs.

  • +3

Check your vehicle spec and see if it complies, that's it.

The two main ones this lists are:
    ACEA A5/B5, API SL/CF

For example, if your car requires API SN then this wouldn't necessarily be adequate (as SN is newer tech than SL), whereas if you require SJ then this would be fine.

    • +1

This. I checked my car's manual and it said I can use SAE 5w-30 if it meets ACEA A5/B5 specs.

  • +2

This is better oil and better value.

"C" rated diesel oil can be used in practically anything running a petrol donk. (there are a few caveats with different C rated oils in diesel engines though, sometimes). Sometimes they list both the diesel rating, and the petrol rating (specs they meet, for any given oil).

For example, both of my diesels can run C1 through to C4, it's just not recommended they run C5 as it's a 20 viscosity oil for very new vehicles, which will also provide a little less protection than the heavier viscosity oils of 30 and 40. Not even including the mention of HTHS and SAPS levels. Depending on how much I give an F, or if an engine isn't burning too much oil between services, I'd run the lowest weight possible to save as much $ at the bowser as possible.

Anyway, C3 has a higher minimum HTHS (for hotter environments or more HD use) and mid SAPS (actual metals contained within the engine oil itself, which provide engine wear protection).

I'm on my way to writing a wall of text, so i'll stop. There's a lot to learn of course.

    • +3

Yea it's a great deal but it's one of the products Supercheap have on their site ongoing but not available to buy anywhere and unavailable for delivery.

    • hx7 is a synthetic blend oil, where nulon is a Full Synthetic oil.

      • When it meets certain specs, it doesn't matter a whole lot, not at normal drain intervals anyway.

  • Cheap for A5 spec

    • Cheap for a reason.

  • Sweet as deal Thanks OP

  • +4

So is this good for a 2005 Holden VZ with fluffy dice, missing fuel lid and a coat hanger shaped in the map of Australia for an arial

    • This oil is way too good for an old rattletec motor

  • I found they have issues for supplying from last couple orders.

  • Does Supercheap Auto price match Sparesbox ebay / online store?

    • +2

      Yes

    • Only if delivery is free/included for whichever items you wish to price beat, otherwise they take the total cost into account.

  • +14

Obligatory post to say Sparesbox ain't what it used to be.

My last few orders have been cancelled and money refunded a good 3 months or so after said date.

Any enquires result in them bullshitting about how it will be shipped soon blah blah, give us a week or two. But it never ships and it takes escalating to finally receive your refund.

The first time it happened I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Second and third time I thought I'd try just to see and it was consistent with their shitty practises. Not to mention previous big orders before this had half the items missing, and again I had to chase up to get a refund from the items that didn't arrive.

Savings ain't worth the time wasted either waiting for items or the refund.

    • You forget the name of the store that does check out. Sorry, no spares in the box, no sale.

  • +2

    Crazy cheap price for A5/B5

I think it's old stock or packaging as the fully synthetic nulon stuff is now called Alex+. Sparesbox might do the usual thing as say that item it out of stock because it's got a new barcode or something.

    • I think it's old stock or packaging as the fully synthetic nulon stuff is now called Alex+. Sparesbox might do the usual thing as say that item it out of stock because it's got a new barcode or something.

If it's called Alex+ or has a new barcode then it's a different product to what you ordered so of course they won't supply a product that you didn't order.

If they did you would want to return it.

  • +2

Yeah the reason it's cheap is its the last of the old packaging / old formula. All the nulon oil now is using the new formula. Nothing wrong with this old stuff though.

    • Old is good, can I use this for Toyota corolla, old car anyway and this is so cheap

      • Look on the cars oil cap. Or read the owners manual.

    • +2

      Correction, it’s called Apex+, typo.

The formulation would be identical, it would still be a A5/B5 spec. It would be whatever base stock Nulon can get their hands on plus the additive package (ad-pack).

One thing to keep in mind is that Nulon, Gulf Western, Penrite, etc don't formulate their products, some may not even blend and reach out to a toll blender.

Quite simply they get the base stock, reach out to an additive chemical company, e.g Chevron Ornite, Infineum, Lubrizol, etc. Pretty much all motor engine oil is formulated this way, if you’re a Shell, Mobil, Castrol or a Nulon. These big oil companies always need to reach out to an additive chemical company.

A company like Nulon would approach an Ornite and say "we want to hit this spec". They maybe be using an Exxon Mobil EHC base oil. It's an off the shelf formulation, EHC 50 + Ad-pack 12 = A5/B5, no chemists involved. Some additive companies may offer small modification’s a better dispersant package for example. Oil companies with in house chemists may create chemical compounds for their ad-pack. Castrol Titanium FST is an example of a custom compound for an additive package.

One thing I would like to mention is always go off the car manufacture oil spec says. If they call out A5/B5 sequence go with that. If they give you a viscosity range, then you have a bit of flexibility, but as long as you remain within spec. Don’t start using C1,C2, API XX, etc in an engine that calls out A5/B5. Also, some European cars have their own spec, BMW, Merc and others have their own which are ‘usually/almost’ identical to an ACEA spec with some differences on some tests (usually tighter spec’s) or have some test specified which may not be a required test in the ACEA spec. There are reasons why these car companies are ACEA members but have their own spec, they known their engine the best.

      • Hi, I managed to price beat with the new version at super cheap auto. My 2017 Suzuki manual says “best option 0w-20, 5w-30, API SL SM or SN, ILSAC GF-3, GF-4, GF-5.”
The new apex+ bottle says API SP and ILSAC GF-6A”. From my understanding SP should be compatible with the older standard so my car should be fine with this newer version right?

Also the manual does not mention any Ax/Bx rating so I should not worry if the oil is A1/B1, A3/B4 or even A5/B5?

  • +1

This thread has a pretty good explanation of the differences between A3/B4 and A5/B5
    https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/a3-b4-vs-a5-b5.251…

    • hmm this getting complex …think i will just wait for castrol edge 5w30 to be on special again for my bmw …. castrol says use 0w40 but 0w40 is rarely on special and i don’t think the 0 rating would save me much fuel compared to extra cost.

  • Description is confusing. Is Mazda included or not

  • +1

The replies to this post made me realise that Sparesbox never sent me some motorcycle chain lube I ordered Nov 9. Got the motor oil that was also part of the order promptly, but never the rest, and no follow up from the seller. Looks like eBay won't help as it's now more than 30 days since the expected delivery date… Buyer beware!

  • They sent a pair of SUV brake disks I purchased to the wrong street number in my neighborhood. (The courier delivered it to a restaurant), who ever printed the label printed it wrong. And I had to go door knocking to get my goods back. And sparesbox reps were unapologetic and rude when I questioned about their mistake.

    • Always grab vehicle parts at a brick and mortar store… It's all well and dandy to buy online, until there's a stuff up, or you need to do a return, or both.

Your time is worth more than the muck around it can become.

  • I have had stock issues with spares box (eBay store) before but at this price rolled the dice again. Kept on them regarding inventory & delivery. They just replied that they indeed have no stock & would cancel the order.

I did a search of there store for this oil & it came up with an unbelievable 414 seperate listings. The few that I checked all have the oil available for delivery.

Not sure what their up to but are gaining quite the negative reputation.

Side note, this oil was not available on the website store only the apex+ equivalent so it could be related to their eBay store.

    • +1

They offered the apex+ as a replacement of no extra charge, which is technically a better oil, so not bad if they do deliver it

    • I bought everything I needed for a brake change a couple of months ago at 25% off. Sure enough, after three weeks of no action I message them and they say all of the items are all out of stock — despite them all being in stock on their website.

      Very unreliable.

  • Glad I ordered this. Now being offered their newer better oil anyway… Nulon APEX+ 5W-30 Long Life Engine Oil 5L Full Synthetic (APX5W30D1-5)

I’m writing to inform you that we experienced some technical difficulties in the lead-up to Christmas that resulted in some previously deactivated Nulon listings being reactivated without our knowledge.

    • have they sent yours out? I am still waiting the shipping confirmation.

This includes the Nulon Full Synthetic Fuel Efficient Engine Oil 5W-30 5L (SYNFE5W30-5) from your most recent order. Nulon has discontinued this product and so we are unable to supply it to you.

We would like to offer you two options as a solution:

    1. We can provide you with the new product from the Nulon range, Nulon APEX+ 5W-30 Long Life Engine Oil 5L Full Synthetic (APX5W30D1-5). This is the Nulon replacement for the oil you purchased and a high-quality product that is designed to provide long-lasting protection for your engine.

    2. Alternatively, if you would prefer, we can cancel the Nulon Full Synthetic Diesel Performance Engine Oil 5W-30 10L and provide you with a refund.

    • +1

Mine arrived today after opting for the replacement via ebay message on 30th Dec they replied confirming the replacement on 3rd of Jan.

      • For me they just created a new order now for the replacement products. 10-20 business days to delivery they wrote. No rush, price is good enough to wait.
