I'm a pretty big Stan for Sanderson and his works so this seems like a no brainer for $5.

The Mistborn Trilogy is fantastic for anyone that hasn't read it

    • how does 2 and 3 compare to 1?

      • +2

As a combined story, very well - I've read them a few times now and have always like them I couldn't pick a favourite out of the 3 but the sequels certainly don't disappoint

        • I enjoyed 1 but after finishing 1, I felt from the way it ended that I didn't need to know more. And I wasn't looking forward to the sequels.

I have heard that book 2 is about the politics of running a country and features Elend extensively. And there's also romance. I don't like Elend, don't like romance, and I don't care for politics.

Who I liked reading about was Kelsier and Lord Ruler. I won't say any more than that. I read 1 about 10 years ago and haven't bothered reading 2 in that time. I purchased two different versions of the trilogy in paperback.

          • +1

@lostn: You should read it again and the secret histories afterwards if you want more Kelsier. It’s a great add on to the series but you kind of need to finish the trilogy before secret history

          • @lostn: I found book 2 boring, but books 2/3 definitely give way more background as to why the world was the way it was to begin with.

      • I felt 2 wasn't nearly as good as the first. The first blew me away. Personally I missed the presence of a key character who I felt made the first book. Without them, it wasn't the same. That same character has a scene about ¾'s through the first book which remains as one of my all time greatest fantasy scenes. Incredible. Sanderson is quite the wordsmith.

In saying that, I did enjoy book 3 more than the second. They're all still worth reading.

      • +1

It gets much better. The third book is miles ahead of the first. From memory, the first and second books were somewhat simple but all of a sudden Sanderson knocks out an amazing book. The wooden characters become really well fleshed out. Not Stormlight Archives highs but pretty damn good. Makes the first books worth it.

      • 2 and 3 are better than 1, it just keeps getting better.

    • So it’s not as good the second time around? /s

  • +8

He’s the best author in fantasy in the last decade. Temped to get these though I already borrowed them from the library and read them. Great series.

    • Yeah I saw something on reddit recently saying that he's the only hope for Game of Thrones to ever be completed (and well)

      • As much as I appreciate Sanderson's books he would be an awful choice to finish ASoIaF. He's a devote Mormon who shies away from describing too much violence or sex within his works. Martin is far more graphic in his descriptions of both sex and violence.

I would assume that someone like Daniel Abraham or Ty Franck would have been the actual first choice. Since Daniel Abraham actually co-authored several books with GRRM already and adpated some of the works for the graphic novels. Ty Franck is GRRM's former assistant and together with Abraham wrote the Expanse series under the pen name James S. A. Corey. So they've proven they can produce large series of novels on a set timeline. However, Franck said there was a time where they could have paid James S. A. Corey enough to finish the series, with GRRM's blessings, but that time has now passed.

Martin is believed to have instructed his estate to not allow anyone to finish the series anyway. So unless he has a change of heart it's a bit pointless to discuss.

        • Fair I did not know that, I've long given up on the series tbh which is a real shame

        • +2

On top of that, Sanderson is on record saying he woud never do it either.

      • +2

He's specifically said he's the wrong choice, their tones are just too different.

When it comes to awesome, complex world design, plots which are planned from the start and payoff fantastically, action scenes, and more recently good characters, Sanderson shines.

When it comes to realistic unfortunate events cutting a story short and having it lead nowhere, incestual sex, really graphic violence, etc, it's not really his strength, and he agrees on that.

    Great trilogy

  • +4

I really liked these ones. Really couldn't get into the wax and Wayne sequels though. Can't wait for the next storm light books.

    • +5

You're missing out big time. Give it another go now that the series is complete.

The Wax & Wayne series is more lighthearted mystery detective adventure. Wax is the straight man, Wayne is the comic who became the heart of the series. The last book bring in MAJOR crossover with the Cosmere so it's practically essential reading if you are a fan of The Stormlight Archive.

      • Yes it's on my to do list. I'm at the end of wheel of time now, coincidentally just started Sanderson's contributions. Something will need to fill the hole.

      • I couldn't get into his superhero ones either. Seemed a bit childish. Maybe need to be in a better mood for them too.

        • I don't think those are in his shared universe with the Mistborn storyline (The Cosmere), but the others in the Cosmere are all worth reading since they all tie together.

A certain major Mistborn character has, for example, turned out to have been a major player in the Stormlight books, just operating under a different name.

  • Thanks OP - have read this before and enjoyed it, great Bargain for anyone with a Kindle or Tablet with Kindle App

    • I think about 98% of kindle books are read on the Kindle app on people's smartphones, not a tablet or Kindle.

Trying to imagine how an eBook can be a boxed set

Didn't really want to make my own post but Mother of learning is also on sale for 1.47 each

    • You defintely should make a post. Enjoyable books to read.

    • Thanks for sharing. Never heard of this author before.

    Great trilogy!

    Great books

FYI also available on the Kobo store for the same price

  • +1

I’m also a big Sanderson Stan

  • +4

Be warned. Mistborn is a gateway drug to Sanderson. Soon your friends and family will be staging interventions, concerned about your sleeplessness, your non-stop references to ‘the cosmere’ and ‘sanderlanches,’ and your storming refusal to swear any more.

No brainer at this price. Buy, buy, buy!

    • +2

Blood and bloody ashes! I'm always amused by fantasy swear words.
      Mother's milk in a cup!

    • I've read mistborn and absolutely loved it. Can you suggest the next of his series I should read?

      • +7

Mistborn is in a shared universe called the Cosmere. They're set on different worlds with ways to travel between them, and increasing crossovers and interconnected plots.

Elantris is the first one and is pretty clunky. The Emperor's Soul is a standalone small novella set on the same world and is pretty amazing.

Then there's the first Mistborn trilogy.

Warbreaker is a standalone and is good but not great, but is good to read before the big one.

The Stormlight Archive is the big epic fantasy series where everything comes together, and is currently in progress. There's a novella between 2 & 3, and another between 3 & 4, which probably should have been part of the main books but they're already huge with tons of side stories of other characters.

Mistborn era 2 just finished and technically runs alongside the Stormlight archive or maybe in between books 5 and 6, but the author has published them already so it's apparently fine to read without spoilers, or even better.

Mistborn Secret History is a novella which takes places before the last book of era 2, but goes right back to tell a story which threads right through the original Mistborn trilogy as well. It connects with Stormlight #4 in a subtle but important way.

Sixth of the Dusk is a novella set after those and gives a hint about where things are going.

There's also a comic series, White Sand, which the author wrote early on but felt wasn't good enough to publish since his skills have improved, so it was made into a comic.

Also another novella called Silence in the Forests of Hell or something, which was fine, and probably good to read before Mistborn Secret History for a small reference.

          Thanks for the detailed response!

  • Also on sale in the US store for those who have their Kindle account based there.

    • Must have missed it. Showing $25 for me

      • Still showing as $3.35us for me. Maybe it's because I have prime?

  • +2

Also vouching for this. Read this right after reading the stormlight archive and wasn't disappointed. Great series.

  • Sanderson is one of those authors who seems to garner sales through fame. I've got all of his Stormlight series and found it very unique and well written, however the Mistborn series I just couldn't get into. The first book felt childish and the characters simplistic, I never bothered continuing as I don't feel it would likely get better.

That said, this price is an excellent deal for those who enjoy his works.

    • Mistborn is fairly YA in nature

  • +1

remember boys and girls always get rid of the damn DRM from eBooks. Have lost a few and since then I'm sailing the high seas for eBooks.

  • +2

Great introduction to the Cosmere without having to take on a series as large as the Stormlight Archive. Sanderson is a prolific writer so if you enjoy these there's several other similar series that he has written. Sanderson has his critics, but to me he produces high quality novels on a consistent basis and I found this series and the Stromlight Archive really entertaining.

    • i will probably be a pensioner by the time he finishes SA. there's a chance GRRM finishes his series first as much as we meme him.

      • +1

At the rate he's going there's about 15 years left to finish SA. Given what a writing machine he is I'm not so worried about him slowing down, maybe more his health failing or something.

        • 15 years is a long time. I'm not worried about his writing pace, it's that he's writing other series ahead of it. If you're going to make a 10 book series, maybe don't string your audiences along for 25-30 years?

          • +1

@lostn: The reason he writes so fast and doesn't burn out either seems to be because he writes other series too. If he gets stuck on one he just switches to another and is always writing. Those other series tend to tie in together in the shared world so if you see the cosmere as one story it doesn't feel like any loss anyway.

  • +2

Like everyone has mentioned above, this is a great series and well worth the read.

  • +2

Great series by a great author. Excellent price

  • I've read SA which was really good, might give this a try

  • That's weird, I get an error when trying to purchase on my Web browser and my Android app says it's not supported device to purchase this. Anyone else?

  • Its now showing as $29.99. Is anyone else getting this?
