The Massdrop HD6XX is the best way to get this series of Sennheiser sound for a reasonable price

Sennheiser has done an Apple and not only raised prices, but clamped down on regional pricing and not allowing overseas retailers to directly ship to AU

    • Absolutely this, a quick Google search will show many more positive reviews of the HD6XX when compared with the HD660s. Given that the HD6XX is much cheaper than this, it's a no-brainer.

    • Currently on sale but not as much as the expired deal… wondering if worth waiting

      • Goes on sale every few months. But given inflation, I doubt it will drop to $179 USD many more times going forwards.

6XX is sensational, but a bit of a different beast to the 660 S. 6XX is harder to drive and would probably be best used with some kind of amp. The 6XX is closer to the HD 650 and many say they are almost indistinguishable.

The Drop equivalent of the 660 S is probably the 58x, the two are closer when it comes to impedance and overall sound characteristics. 58x is also a little cheaper than 6XX and you can use the 58x more comfortably with lower powered devices.

All of that said, the 6XX is likely to scale better if you get into higher end equipment. The 660 S is a tough sell in general considering the other similar alternatives.

    • The 6xx and 650's are the exact same headphone, other than colour (and price). If you can afford them and have a decent amp you should absolutely buy them because the only way to describe how they sound is magical

      • Apart from the cable which is a step down (and shorter) and from many reports online more prone to failure on the small jacks that go into the drivers. I have one that failed here, in that exact same spot. Cheap and nasty cable, but good headphones otherwise. Safest to factor in the replacement cost as the total purchase price as they're likely to fail shortly out of warranty.

  • Better price with HD6xx. I have a Creative SXFI Amp, and wondering if it's good enough to drive HD6xx

    • I would say almost any amp will help a 6XX over a phone or motherboard built in amp, unless your phone or motherboard have an exceptionally good amp (not exactly common).

  • It's too much for a hd6** series headphone. 6xx's are considerably cheaper, are reviewed more favorably. I owned hd650's for years, and can't tell the difference audibly from the hd6xx's. It's just a fantastic mid range headphone; I recommend it to all my friends who are just starting out. Nothing really competes with them for the price (other than used). You don't need an Dac or amp, my hd650's could be run on the phone just fine (its not a hifiman ayra) but it is certainly worth the $100 to 150 to just clean up the audio. Also I use to run mine with a EQ to give it a little more bass, but thats all personal preference.

  • Great headphones, similar sound signature to the hd58x but 660s are just superior in every aspect.

Price is fair after discount and really not worth debating value since alike any other hobby, there are diminishing returns as the prices increase exponentially.

These are great for general use and daily drivers for most given their light weight and open aired design, although similar to the 6xx/58x, these are absolutely terrible for positional audio with its intimate sound stage and therefore would not recommend any of them for competitive fps.
