Steps to bring down the price:

  1. Register for Woolworths Everyday rewards, then in the app, register for Extra - free one month trial. This automatically gives 10% off for one purchase at BigW.
    https://www.woolworthsrewards.com.au/extra.html
    Price is now $359.10

  2. Get the NRMA Blue Membership from here (for free) - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/732729 . Purchase the BIGW e-gift card (I used the app) for exactly $359.10.
Cost of gift card is $341.15

  3. Register on the BIGW site/app. Add the Everyday Rewards card.

  4. Place the order on the BIGW website, choose click and collect for $0, free delivery to boot option is great - Use the coupon 10% XDEC2022 that's from the Everyday Extra membership from Step 1. Then in payment, use the gift card just purchased.

Total cost: $341.15

NOTE:
1. There's no coupon stacking on BigW, so no use getting the $10 by joining "Inner circle" etc - if you can't get the 10% off, do this instead.
2. Don't know about cashrewards etc, others can add comments

Pros:
The TV itself is great.. Size is perfect for a small room.
Weighs around 10 kilos - mounting, moving is easy
Comes with two remote controls - one is the Magic Remote that brings a mouse pointer on the screen
The OS is LG's - so works with the LG ThinQ app - full remote on the app and surprising feature - can even play the audio on a connected mobile phone
TV has built in bluetooth, so can connect to a headset for audio
I've had an EKO 65 inch Non android TV for about 3 years now, with no issues at all, so I'm cool with this brand
I preferred warranty this time, because my last one was a second hand from FB and conked, and I found out only now that it was refurbished :-/

Cons:
Edge lit I presume, so obvious bleeds etc, and viewing angles for plain black are just average
Compared with an OLED TV in store, OLED had deeper colors, but some grainy processing artefacts
Default picture quality wasn't great - kept it side by side with another TV I enjoy and brought it close by tweaking the settings (can share if someone's keen)
The HD channels are fine, but non-HD FTA ones are crappy to watch.
Don't download the manual from the EKO website, this TV is different - has only one button on the bottom of the TV, and the mounting points are much lower on the back.
It kept complaining that I should "Accept terms and conditions" but the pop up just didn't work. I did an OS update, then went into some System settings, found the Terms and Conditions and accepted a whole heap of them before it worked fine..

All the best and leave a comment if you benefitted..

No comments on the TV, but upvote for the effort in the write up!

My thoughts exactly! Well done OP!

  • +7

I paid more for my first ever TV. A 34cm/13" CRT.

    • +1

A 34cm Sony was the first TV I had in my bedroom back in 1995. They were ridiculously over-priced, I remember it being around $600 or so.

    • +1

And remember, $400 30 years ago is like $903.22 today, just based on inflation

    • +1

Same here. Was a Goldstar 34” with manual tuning that we paid $399 on lay-by at Grace Bros, first major purchase after we got married. Felt like aaaaaages for us to pay it off, but we felt like royalty when we got it home!

    • +10

At 400 bucks, I'll just throw it up on gumtree for 50 bucks once I'm done with it.

      • +1

And I will buy it from you at $50

    • +14

Do people upgrade their TVs often? Didn't think resale value would be an important consideration otherwise

      • Define "often". No idea why my comment was downvoted for stating the truth.

        • +2

Think you'll find it's all relative.. expectations of resale from a $300 TV would be low…

        • +1

You can objectively state the truth and still be in a situation of "no shit sherlock", it doesn't particularly need to be stated that a bargain bin 400 dollar TV from China probably wouldn't resell for much.

        • Must be because you included the words "Chinese" and "poor" in the same sentence.

    • +8

Lol what a ridiculous way to judge a TV, especially a $400 one like this.

  • +1

    And 65" is $499

Problem is, by the time you c&c the stock will be gone

    • $749?

      • +1

        Diff model $499

pro Series looks alright for $599 too..

        • i recently bought the 75" instore on clearance for $699 (629 after staff discount) and was happy with the TV when it turned on. Was the last one new in box but they had others that were display stock and lots of other sizes.

however I returned it after two weeks after it stopped turning on reliably. first week it did it once and I moved the cord from a power board to its own power point, thinking it had fixed the problem. second week it only turned on a couple of days.

        • Pro series has Dolby Vision support.

But rated as using double the energy as a standard 65…

But..they are basically BS…as the backlight was probably set brighter than the sun in the test, and when turned down and set right (you'd be nuts leaving it in its default setting…look shite and die in less than 2 years), it will probably use the same as every other VA panel TV.

          • No stock in SA.
  • not bad

  • How are the viewing angles? Is this a VA panel?

    • not sure about VA or not.. i checked from an angle.. screen is slightly reflective, so that interferes if there's lights or windows.. otherwise it's not bad at all.. recommend go see it in store..

    • +1

Yep, its a VA. The viewing angles on the QLED variant are very poor. The non QLED, basically the same as other VAs.

How often do people upgrade televesion these days.

My dad was hangining on to his Sony Trinition TV from 1983 until 2005. It was in perfect condition but whilst he was moving home the CRT cracked, eventually he ended up buying SONY 36 inch plasma, which he still uses.
I still use 52 inch Sony LCD from 2010. It is still in perfect condition. Ofcourse it is not a smart tv or it has Wifi, that does not bother me, as I have attached NVIDIA shield pro and Apple TV.

    • +4

Try SmartTubeNext apk on your shield if you watch YouTube. Ad free.

      • @SoTightEcoLPI: Thanks for that. I will definatly install it, as I am sic of Ad's.

        • +1

SmartTubeNext also comes with built in Sponsorblock, which is great if you are sick of hearing that this video was brought to you by Raid of Wars: Empire Battle

    • 36" plasma? Pretty sure they were 32" or 42" in those days…

      • @Mondorock:I thought it was 36" plasma. I might need to call my dad and find out if it is 32" or 42" :)

        • +1

Seems like an odd size, I don't recall ever seeing a 36" TV of any kind.

          • +1

            @Mondorock: I had a 37" way back in about 2010.

          • +2

@Mondorock: Finally I got to speak with my dad, it is Sony KE42MR1E. So as you mentioned it is 42". I am not sure why I always thought it was 36" :) Funny he still does have invoice for that TV apparently. lol

    • +3

Every 5 years is the sweet spot for me.

    • December 2022…my 2008 42" LG FHD lcd would not turn on :(. Also was heavy AF for one person to handle. But it had a long life, was only upset at the timing of my annual leave.

I didn't really upgrade (needed to cut back on spending. But if this deal was available, I would have gone for it) - ended up with 42" FHD led 2012 model off Facebook for $120 (Maybe I could have found something better with time… But unresponsive FB sellers and lack of tv was driving me crazy! ).

That being said, technology has changed a lot, I can understand how other people upgrade for better viewing experience - backlit or full array led, OLED, 4k, smart tv etc…

    • +1

Still have my Panasonic Plasma 55" :D

      • Still have my 2011 Samsung 51" plasma (even modded it to act as a different, more superior model). Will consider finally upgrading next year (perhaps to a second-generation Samsung QD-OLED).

    • +3

Still have a 50" Samsung 720P DLP Rear Projection TV from around 2005 I think. Paid $2300 plus another $400 for the digital set to box. At the time an equivalent plasma was $5-7k. It was repaired twice under the 5yr extended warranty but since then it just won't die & I refuse to replace it until it's dead beyond repair.

But I can't stop myself from keeping an eye on the prices of cheap screens, just in case it dies tomorrow.

    • +3

Plasmas can use up a lot more power. Do the calcs you might find buying a new tv will pay it self off in power savings.

    • Had a 42" Panny plasma from ~2011 to ~2018. Still doing duty at my parents place and doesn't look like it's going to die anytime soon.

Had the current Hisense 65N7 TV since ~2018. Starting to get itchy feet but don't want to upgrade until I can go to OLED and even a 65" (70 or 75 preferred when I upgrade) is still $2500+.

So 6-7 years for me, for the main TV.

I have a 120" projector screen I bought when we were living in the states, but haven't been in a house with enough room to set it up since we got back - gathering dust in storage.

But the 50" Bravia I got off ebay a few years ago for the back patio died sometime in the last 6 months (was a 2015? model from memory - the last ones before they went to android) and I'm looking to replace it. But waiting until a week or two after Christmas when I assume more people will be trying to offload TVs they just replaced. :)

    • housemates 80cm CRT around $2000 1998 or so.
free 40" plasma surplus from work around 2008 faulty power but repaired for $150 or so.
      inherited 32" Sony 2015
free 42" LG LCD surplus from work fully working 2018
      $630 75" Eko 2022 but returned faulty.

Also decided 75" is a bit large for PC use. width was good but its too high. thought I'd use multiple windows instead of needing two separate screens. In the market for dual 55"-60" to replace the 32"+42" I've gone back to using.

  • +1

7 years ago, I paid $299 for GVA 42" FHD TV without smart function at TGG.

The price of TVs has become really cheap compared to before.
    Thank you, technologies! 😁

    • I paid $240 for this TV but it doesn't turn on in cold weather, it works ok on this summer. I need to replace it next few months.

      • Mine has a backlight issue after 4 years…
Sometimes, 1 or 2 lines of backlight are not turning on or turned on very delayed…
I think I have to replace 2 lines of backlight myself.

  • Great write up Op. Thanks.

Anyone knows how this compares to the kogan series 9 tv. $435. I have a kogan voucher to use from their credit card offer.

    • +1

My gripe with an old Kogan Agora Android TV was that it booted to a home screen that needed you to press OK on the remote before you could watch the channel or HDMI input you wanted..and all the apps were useless because they could not be updated beyond a certain point. Not sure how the latest Android TVs work..

I prefer a dumb screen and a Chromecast anyday..

Also, bigw warranty is probably better? just going by reviews..no experience though, thankfully..

      • is that kogan one KALED43UHDZAB0373 ? 2017 model ?

the one that cannot run 4K 60Hz via HDMI ? but can run 4K @30 fps via HDMI ?

  • +2

I had one.. they are very slow to load and just after a year screen stuffed up.. had a hot spot on the edge that would burn your hand to touch. I ended up taking it back to big w and they gave me a full refund even though it was outside of the warranty period. Even at this price i wouldnt buy another. If i didnt notice the hot spot i fear it could have started a fire quite easily. Its not worth the risk to me.

    • i started mine every time from a full power down, and its pretty fast..maybe 20 seconds?.. my chromecast takes longer to load though.. also, its brand new.. might slow down after usage..

  • +1

Got one of their so called "Pro Series" few months ago for the guest bedroom. Therefore hardly used but only lasted exactly two months and refused to turn on. Even when it worked, the smart functions were practically useless being too slow. BIGW refunded with no questions asked and without even testing it so I'm wondering whether these TVs are having a much higher failure/return rate even BIGW doesn't want to waste any more time on those. I'd stay away and spend a bit more and get a Hisense or even a TCL if you are after a budget TV.

    • +1

Crazy to me that a TV that terrible is mass produced.

    140W power consumption for 55".

It reminds me of the time I checked an old Dell 24" computer monitor real time power consumption was around 80W and thought that was reasonably good.

  • +1

May as well ask here as anywhere.

Currently have a Hisense 65N7. Per post above, don't really want to replace it until I can get OLED, BUT

If I can get something as good but bigger (so 75") and cycle the 65N7 out to patio duties, that would also work.

TV gurus, are any of the cheapy Big W EKO or JVC TVs as good as my existing 65N7 ? I'm particularly eyeballing the two 75"s for $899.

(Everything we do is through Apple TVs, so don't really care about how well it works as a Smart TV.)

  • Does it work with alexa and google assistant, eg can i control the tv via my echo dot. Asking for my friend in a wheelchair who cant use his hands

  • +1

    Thanks OP.

XDEC2022 works regardless. I've had rewards for ages and code worked a treat by just pasting it in checkout with no other processes.

Ended up with the Polaroid 55" with android listed at $449 for $404 plus 2000+ rewards points from 5x big W booster in app = $10.

    So $55+ off.
Or $50 off the Eko $399 one.
