Ceiling Fan Needed if Already Have Ducted Aircon

Hi all,

I'm doing a renovation and deciding whether it'll be a good idea to install DC ceiling fans in the bedrooms and living room given that we already have ducted aircon installed.

Itlls be an extra $1800 for the fans

Wondering if anyone had experience in similar situation

Cheers,

Yes. Fans work well to cool down on warmer days, particularly warmer nights and use much, much less energy than AC.

  • Noticed that you're in Sydney so YMMV.
We have fans in all rooms and get away with just having the fans on rather than the ducted aircon. I reckon in the last 2 years we've only had the aircon on for less than 50 days.

Ceiling fans are way more common in QLD. Effective too and uses much less energy than air-con as long as it's not too hot/humid.

It's worth noting Sydney has escaped brutal summers in the last 2 years and are probably not normal summers.

I got celling fans in every room, even with ducted reverse cycle aircon. Good for warmer nights.

  • Vornado fans i like more than ceiling fans.

Yeah do it. The fans can do a lot when it’s touch an hour for using the air con. Particularly at night

    • Yes, I usually have my ducted aircon for like an hour or two and have the fan running overnight

  • Yes fans still sometimes necessary with ducted AC, unless you turn your ducted up to max on super low temp

  • How tall are your ceilings?

Airflow from fans help reduce skin temp by up to 7 degrees. They don't do much if your not in the room. DC fans utilise as little as 30W.
    Do it.

Good range of models at Only Fans.

  • We have RC air con in the bedrooms as well as ceiling fans. The air con only gets used when it gets really hot or cold. Otherwise we use the fans mostly for cooling - perhaps 1 out of three months in summer. That saves on electricity but not sure how long it would take to recoup $1,800 spent on fans. I think our fans cost $30 each plus cost of electrician but that was many years ago.

I wouldn't waste another $1800 on the fan, that's a lot of electricity for running your aircon. You could've achieved similar results with a single or two $20 standing fan and the beauty of it is that you can move them around the house when needed. Unless you are using a lot of heating, cold air sink so it will naturally disperse around the house (heating is a little more trickier but fan doesn't do well in this regard anyway, no one want a spinning fan in the middle of the winter, even if it is in winter mode).

  • I have both, ducted A/C & have just installed fans in four rooms. They are great on not so hot days, night time in a bedroom they are great.Mind you our home has a 7.2 star energy rating as well, we hardly use the A/C.

  • As another with ceiling fans and AC - I strongly endorse having the former - honestly I wish the AC was never installed - last owners did it to try and 'sweeten' the property to sell.

In 7yrs here we've used it perhaps twice (not including periodic short uses done purely as preventative maintenance).

    • Maybe in tassie AC is not needed, ceiling fan is useless in those 40 degrees day and freezing winter nights. In humid tropical Queensland AC is a must. Any inland place from Alice Springs to Mildura you'll be nut to not have AC in summer.

      • It is good to have both. 40C is common in Perth, but I very rarely run the AC in bedrooms at night. Ceiling fan is perfect if it is still a bit warm at bedtime.

Sydney is more humid though, and if you live in the inland suburbs, it can stay hotter at night.

  • Yes. Fans are cheaper to run and work well without dehumidification. We use ours a lot in preference to the split system especially in the bedroom. They are really good when the temp is almost right and you just want a bit of gentle air movement.

  • Thanks all for your comments.
I get the consensus is to pay up for the fans but my partner is not keen on it given we've got ducted aircon (which also has a fan function), we've never had fans and Sydney's climate is on the cooler side most of the time.

So we've decided to meet half way to install it in the living areas only as the ceiling is higher there and communally used and not install in bedrooms which have standard ceiling heights which would cut the install cost greatly. And for those rarer days when temp is on the high side we've got the aircon and vornados.
