  • Noticed people saying the 820 won't be in stock here for a while too, JB website seems to suggest 6 weeks or so. Excellent unit.

    • +3

Bought the 820 on black friday, despite having an xbox series x and thinking there may not be any advantage. Definitely wrong on that count. The 820 is so good - picture quality and sound.

      • Can you really see any difference? I have a pretty good FullHD Blu Ray player and I cant really tell any difference between my 1080p blu ray discs to a 4k stream.

        • +4

4k streams are a fraction of the bitrate of 4k blu ray discs, you need to compare blu FHD ray with blu ray 4k to see and hear the difference and even some players upscale FHD content to 4k so well that it can make the difference even less obvious.

            @catchmeifyoucan: Just download 4k remuxes

            • @bohn: Exactly, I just rip every new 4K Blu Ray I buy to MKV files and play them directly on my TV but Dolby Vision discs can be a pain to get working correctly.
There are many advantages to doing this and although it takes a while to rip in the first place, I prefer this method as I don't have to put up with the the Xbox's fan and disc spinning noises.

        • It's normal to expect a 1080p blu-ray to look better than a 4K stream, because the bit rate is higher on a blu-ray than most streaming services even at 4k. Though in some cases I'd take a 4k stream over a blu ray for HDR.

          A 4K blu-ray will look noticeable better than a 1080p blu-ray however.

        • I wear glasses and I can. Easily.

@scuderiarmani: Over a PS5 really.. what tv do you have ??

Are there any YouTube videos that really shows it pulls ahead ?

            • @solidussnake: Why you changing the criteria? Do you need help reading?

I'm just trying to see if it's worth buying over a PS5 and also yes also a Xbox since you know they're both consoles.. and how apparently you can absolutely tell the difference that's all thanks anyway.. 😘

                    • @solidussnake: Nah, you are here to mock people who bought them, obviously a little bit jealous, or you are just a lonely troll.

Not one constructive post, only mocking.

Only need to look below, caught you out lying….. You said it yourself, 'absolutely not worth it'

    • Try ringing around a few stores - they can tell you what stock is on the system. I found one today - and also quite a few nearby stores were listed as having 1 or 2 that don't register on the website stock. I got a PM $445 at Videopro, with $30 off $250 perks and paying with recent 15% off coles gift cards came to $352.

Any advantage over PS5 besides Dolby Vision?

      • +3

I find the PS5 (and Xbox) to have more buggy 4k disc players than my dedicated Sony player. Dedicated player also generally better supports different home AV setups and handles more obscure video or audio codecs better. If you already own a PS5 and are happy I would not get a dedicated player.

A lot of people on the internet will make nebulous statements like "The video quality is way better", but will little actual testing to back it up.

edit: Meant to reply to the top level comment, but oh well

Only if you have an expensive setup already. Most tvs don't even display full hdr

    • No, it is not. I do both have and can't find any difference on LG C2. Sold the Panasonic at gumtree the next day.

  • Will this play region a blu ray?

    • +1

      Niet, not with stock firmware

  • is the HCX chip on the 820 worth a $200 upgrade over the 450?

    • +3

"HDR Optimiser" is only used for static HDR (HDR10), not dynamic HDR (HDR10+ & DV).

    • In general I would say no.

    • If you have a recent 4K HDR TV it will do the job.

  • +9

Chuck a $5 pencil case or something in with the $245 player and get another $30 off with the perks voucher.

Don't forget to check your emails if you are a JBHIFi perks member for this offer which expires tomorrow, 23rd Dec (Spend minimum of $250 to get $30 off) for further discount

  • ok so I just picked up the UB450 and tested some Top Gun Maverick scenes on it, I had previously tested the same movie on my PS4 pro bluray (1080p), both devices connected through an Onkyo receiver and played on a basic cheapish 70" Hisense UHD from Costco. Picture quality seems better but not a day and night difference, maybe because my receiver also does 4k upscaling? Or maybe my tv is just not good enough, I reckon it's the tv.

But audio quality is definitely better, I can finally watch the movie in Dolby Atmos. For this price it is a pretty good deal for me, I probably have to get a better TV though.

    • Try plugging he PS4 and also the Player directly into the TV and see if there's a noticeable difference ?

  • Is 7 channel analogue audio better when compared to digital?

    • Kinda depends, but in general analogue surround audio outputs is really more of a legacy support feature. You wouldn't use it over HDMI unless you had a pretty old setup that needed it.

  • Thanks OP for note about the Xbox Series X - didn't realise it doesn't support playing Dolby Vision, and may not have picked up on that.

Jumped into the rabbit hole researching the Xbox player and this unit, and ended up purchasing a Sony UBP-X700, based on reviews. My Sony X95H doesn't support HDR10+ and nearly all my discs are DV anyway, so it reads generally like it'll have better PQ over the Panny. 🤷‍♂️

  • I have a Panasonic UB300 blu-ray player from about five years ago. Is this a massive upgrade?
